For me, HostMySite and CFDynamics have been good. Not a fan of Crystal Tech (bad experiences there).

A few years ago CrystalTech was the place to be. I have hosted there for about ten years, and had very few problems.

However, my need for customer support over the last couple years has been non-existant. This is not so much because I have not had any problems, but more because of the fact that I have not had time to keep up with my sites.

Since CT was bought out or merged or whatever it is that they did, I have seen an increase in the number of developers shying away from CT and heading for HostMySite.

What you may be noticing or feeling is a curve or general trend, balancing the business minded users with developers as our customer base grows. CrystalTech started from developers, for developers and those developers usually find customers of their own to create websites for, and then evolve into somewhat of an interpreter between host and website owner. We like to think that our reps can communicate with business owners and developers alike, a pretty wide range in the way of thinking or thought process.

With our customer base expanding at the safest rate possible and our support personal growing, we find that having representatives that may be more business minded can communicate with more general of a group, yet a little less technical.

It’s also interesting how stigma can be static when characterized in a company transaction, even over many years. CrystalTech was purchased by Newtek in July of 2004, some time ago and there are many of the same managers and employees still here with the original thinking and teachings still very much alive. So, we are trying to grow at a successful pace and not leave anyone behind, pleasing as many people as possible.

I’m curious tclaremont, do you have a dedicated server, or shared plans? I’d love to hear more feedback, what kind of support would you consider most helpful? What kind of questions do you have that are not answered? Are they related to ColdFusion Server Administration, or end user developmental questions? What other kinds of things would you like to see at CrystalTech?

As stated in my post, I have had very few problems. My disclaimer had to do with the fact that I, personally, have not been active in maintaining and managing my sites. This part of my post is not to be perceived as a negative on the part of CrystalTech.

I have been a CF developer from nearly CF's inception. The vast majority of my work is done on my intranet at work, hence my minimal activity on my personal sites hosted at CT (which are on a shared server). It is like the old adage, "Does a mailman go for a walk on his day off???"

My lack of dependency on CT's support staff is a reflection on the fact that once my code was working, I left it alone! It just keeps ticking, as they say.

So, to rephrase my post from above, I have been quite happy with CT, however my needs have been very minimal, and thus I cannot comment on how well or how poorly CT deals with or responds to problems. What I CAN comment on is my observation that more and more developers, especially on this board, have been turning to the other mentioned CF host and reported overwhelmingly satisfying results. Where CT was once considered the defacto standard for CF hosting, there are competitors eating up a good share of the market.

I find Craig Brown's posting on this thread quite noteworthy, however, and evidence of CT's dedication to CF and it's community.

Thanks for the observation! Hopefully I can change the outcome, so I'll leave the questions open to anyone that would like to discuss it. I'm not trying to be defensive, simply open to the thoughts and ideas on how to grow for the community.

I'll guppie up and answer Craig. When I went with Crystal
Tech, I explained what I wanted. The tech didn't understand
me (yeah, I wasn't all the CF techie inclined at the time, just
getting started but it was indeed that HE didn't ask the right
questions and made some poor assumpitons). So when I
found out how the set up was and explained that was not
right, I was told I had to pay again to have the account set
up right. To me, unless a host can prove without a doubt,
hands down that it is the customers' fault, the host should
give the customer the benefit of the doubt. That wasn't done
in my case and I was out of there!

I felt Crystal Tech treated me like "we are smarter than you
so it has to be your fault and you will pay". They took advantage
of my being new with CF and therefore would not accept that it
was their mistake. I also loathed the way they treated email
accounts for a bulk account (more than one domain name).

I like Gearhost. I had CF accounts with them for 6 to 8 months
before I turned around and got a managed dedicated server.
Gearhost has excellant prices and good customer service. While
they certainly won't write CF for their customers, they are good
about making sure the problems aren't on their side.

Any idea what the questions were? I'm sorry that he or she made you feel that way. I think that type of behavior is a known challenge for tech-support groups and we try and give guidence before hand to create awareness so that it does not happen. Furthermore, if that kind of behavior does not improve on our part, we take further corrective action upon that particular employee.

Why would we want to go to a host that spams a three year old post in an effort to persuade us? You post turned into a huge suggestion NOT to use you.

I worked for Terapad which is written exclusively in CF. I can highly recommend Memset as a hosting provider. They were perfect for us when we started out and before we got our own datacentre space.
