Kristen…

Here’s a solution to our problem. I received this from our County library download service and it worked for me.

Hi Kristen…

The solution was an attachment but this time I have copied it below. As I said, it worked for me.

Hello Rosemary Lewis,

Thank you for contacting OverDrive.

This issue can crop up when you're trying to transfer an eBook to your Kobo. We're sorry you're having trouble, but this article should help you out.

Before you try anything below, make sure you're using <http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions.html> Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to transfer eBooks to your Kobo. If you've been trying to use the Kobo desktop software, that could be what's causing the hiccup.

What to try first

Most of the time, simply resetting your Adobe authorization for your Kobo will fix the problem.

1. Make sure the date and time settings on your eBook reader are correct.

You should find these in the Settings menu on your device.

2. Plug your Kobo into your computer with the USB cable that came with your device.

3. Open ADE on your computer.

4. Remove the eBook causing trouble from your library.

5. Click on your device from the menu on the left.

6. Click the Device Options button (shaped like a gear), then select Erase Device Authorization. Click Erase Authorization, then OK to confirm.

7. Try downloading and transferring the title again.

If you're still having trouble, try a factory reset

If resetting your authorization didn't work, you likely need to perform a factory reset on your device. Please remember, when you do this, all of the information you have stored on your device is erased. So, to avoid data loss, make sure you back up anything you don't want to lose.

1. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 above.

2. Close ADE and unplug your Kobo.

3. <http://kobo.intelliresponse.com/index.jsp?requestType=NormalRequest&id=1447&source=5&question=How%20do%20I%20reset%20my%20Wireless%20or%20original%20Kobo%20eReader?> Factory reset your Kobo.

As stated above, you will lose all of your data. When you sync next, your eBooks should automatically be restored, but please remember to back everything up before performing the reset.

4. Plug your Kobo back into your computer, then open ADE.

5. Try downloading and transferring the title again.

If there are any more problems, please don't hesitate to reply.

Thank you,

Jennifer

I am having the same problem with my Kobo Aura.  I followed all the steps above a number of times and I still can't open my book on my eReader. It's there but when I try to open it the following message comes up

"Oops! This document couldn't be opened.  This document is protected by Adobe Digital Rights Management  and is not currently authorized for the use with your Adobe ID.  Please sign in with the authorized Adobe ID and try again"

I have gone into my readers settings and verified that my Adobe account is authorized.

I don't know what to do!!!

Any help would be much appreciated

Jenn

After numerous hours trying many  steps of loading, deleting, factory default setting ,authorizing and de-authorizing the computer and the Kobo,   as recommended by Overdrive and Kobo, I am still unable to download a book from the library,  the message reads " this document is protected by Adobe DRM".  As a test I purchased a book from Kobo of course this worked great!!!!!!  I have given up on Kobo and went back to my Nook,  no problems.    Considering the stiff price I paid for my Kobo I am still open for a solution,

Gerry

To any still experiencing this problem, I found this fix from a reddit thread worked for me:

quote

Response from my library that gives some more details on the likely issue:

The problem you are encountering using Adobe Digital Editons is probably related to a difficulty in transferring certain books (in epub3* format) using version 4.5 of the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software.

This procedure should counter this problem:- remove books that you could not open from the ereader;- borrow a digital book in PDF* format in ADE- connect your Kobo eReader to your computer and, from the ADE library, transfer the desired book(s) and the test book to your eReader;- if you are asked to replace the existing file(s) (books that you have already transferred without success), accept by checking the appropriate box;- unplug the eReader and check if you can read the books you want on the eReader.

*Information relating to the version of the epub format (epub2 or epub3) of digital books does not appear in the OverDrive catalog. This information usually appears in the Kobo catalog. By entering the ISBN number or the title of the book in the search engine, you will find the book file. At the very bottom of the page, on the left, the format information will appear. In general, books published less recently are in epub2 format.

* To locate books in PDF, use the Collection tab and select Books available now then Digital books PDF).

To summarize according to my understanding, the issue is with a certain version of epub books and ADE.  Checking out a book without this problem (e.g., in PDF format), and transferring it to Kobo at the same time as the epub book you actually want somehow works.  As if the PDF is vouching for the epub at the door to an exclusive club!
