License Server Communication Problem: E_ADEPT_INTERNAL

When I try to download a purchased Epub book or acsm file to Adobe Digital Editions I get the error:

Error getting license. License server communication problem: E_ADEPT_INTERNAL

I have deauthorized and downloaded the program a number of times without this helping.
