Because IIS isn't installed with Media Center? I'm trying to remember if
it's available or not .. I only helped someone set up that OS once.

You should have installed IIS before the other programs.
At any rate .. on the laptop, browse to http://localhost/ .. do you get the
default IIS page?

Hello Nancy...
If I save the default.asp as default.htm it works fine....the trouble appears to be around the asp type page...I may have done IIS before dreamweaver ....

IIS and DW are not related so it does not matter what combination there are
installed in.

As Nancy says simply type Http://Localhost and see what you get it. If you
get an error then IIS is not installed. The install it you go to the
Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel, and then select the
Windows component option.

Changing an extension to .htm doesn't prove anything as .htm are handled via
to browser and do not require a server to parse them first.

Hello Paul...thanks for the reply
I believe IIS was installed properly but just in case I removed and added it again...I tested the asp page before I removed IIS also after I added it back with the same application error. The same site config works fine on a desktop running xp professional. I even tried the simplest possible pageconfig with "Hello world" and go the same error.
*scratching my head* I just wonder about the HP architecture...I was a DOS programmer in 1968 and retired from a consulting firm in 2001.

I've been digging around under control panel/admin tools/IIS and found apparently identical stats under IIS for the laptop(not working correctly) and the desktop (works correctly) but then I looked at the event viewer after making a test run of an ASP page and found:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36
Date: 9/24/2006
Time: 7:18:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: PC207082390625
Description:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was 'Class not registered
'.
