Bootstrap 5.0

New Here ,
Feb 16, 2021 Feb 16, 2021

Does Dreamweaver have any plans to update to Bootstrap 5.0? The dreamweaver version I use only has up to 4.4 (and 4.6 has been widely available for some time). What is the Adode's policy with respect to updating to5.0 -- or can I update it myself?

Thanks!

Jim

You can easily update to 4.6 yourself by substituting the current links to the ones that are mentioned here:

https://getbootstrap.com/docs/4.6/getting-started/introduction/

I would not go as far as to update to version 5 unless you are happy to handcode. The syntax in certain areas are different to those of version 4. For Bootstrap 5 see

https://getbootstrap.com/docs/5.0/getting-started/introduction/

Unfortunately, Adobe doesn't give timelines on new/updated features, aside from the occasional "we're working on it and expect it in a future release".

There won't be an official announcement of an addition like that, until they add it.

As others have stated, Adobe will eventually update it, but version 5 is still in beta, so I wouldn't expect any company to adopt pre-release products in a production environment.

You could be waiting a while for DW to update scripts.  Historically, they haven't been too swift about script updates especially when it involves significant code changes like going from Bootstrap 3.x to 4 or 4.x to 5.

As of this writing, the latest stable release of Bootstrap is 4.5.2.  And the latest jQuery core is 3.5.1.

I wouldn't use a beta version in production. But if you wish to experiment with the latest scripts, feel free to use ones hosted on the CDNs.

Hope that helps.

It was February 16, 2021. A year has passed and nothing has happened. Dreamweaver is stuck at bootstrap version 4. Alright, as of February last year Bootstrap 5 was still a beta version. But the first stable release, 5.1, was published in August 2021. Today we're at release 5.1.3. How about waiting a little longer? Maybe the 5.9.99 release will be stable enough.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world has not stood still. Programs to build bootstrap sites, even online, have multiplied and upgraded to the latest version. And web designers who, like me, had gotten excited about the live view, the mediaqueries bar, and all the other new features, are forced to change software.And, with them, web design teachers: today it's virtually impossible to teach a course that covers bootstrap 5. All people who have worked for years with Dreamweaver.

These are the facts, the rest is just blah blah blah.

Simple, you left us in the dark.

@ancia22642260h268,

In case you missed the MAX Roundtable Discussion in October 2021, Dreamweaver is minimally maintained now.  No new features are planned.

There's nothing preventing YOU from using Bootstrap 5.x if your project requires it.  Keep in mind that Bootstrap 5 is NOT the same as previous versions in BS4 or BS3.  So your HTML markup may need to be revised with the new BS5 classes.

You can link to the latest scripts from the Bootstrap Content Delivery Network below.

https://www.bootstrapcdn.com/

By way of an example, here is a Bootstrap 5.1.3 starter page.

<!doctype html>

</ul>
</div>
</div>
</nav>
<div class="container-fluid mt-3">
<h3>Collapsible Navbar</h3>
<p>In this example, the navigation bar is hidden on small screens and replaced by a button in the top right corner (try to re-size this window).</p>
<p>Only when the button is clicked, the navigation bar will be displayed.</p>
<p>Tip: You can also remove the .navbar-expand-md class to ALWAYS hide navbar links and display the toggler button.</p>
</div>

It's sad to say but DW is passed its sell by date now, dead in the water. l wouldn't waste time learning it to be honest and let's face it lm not saying anything Adobe have not said, they recommended Microsofts Visual Studio Code when they killed off Adobe Brackets recently and that in my opinion was shaping up to be a better editor than DW until it lost the love, much the same as has happened to Dw over the course of several years. Adobe realised they can't compete in this space any longer so have largely taken a back-seat where editors are concerned. If youre in this for the long run  then start looking further afield would be my opinion.

I think when the day comes when DW EOL is announced those that have somewhat been attached to DW, like myself at one stage, will heave a sigh of relief, sad to see it go but everything comes to an end some time.

Either that or someone else sees it as an investment and gives it new life.

Adobe would still have to be in this process of letting a potential buyer act

I don't think anyone would see Dw as an investment these days, it would need to be re-written from the ground up. Its not salvageable as it currently stands in my opinion, either in name or what it currently offers. The competition are light years ahead and there's a zillion of them which is why the decision was made to effectively put Dw out to pasture. How long that process goes on for is anyone's guess. l suspect few are buying into it as a standalone solution but are using if they have full cloud access. Adobe could have continued to aggressively develop Dw if they chose but they are not a company that sees value in a small slice of the pie, which is an understandable business decision.

I pay 49 pounds a year for Storm which puts DW to shame if you compare the two and how far one is advanced opposed to the other yet Adobe still wants to charge a premium price for a product that doesn't even belong in the same space.

Would l still be using DW if it had been progressively enhanced and the price was made competitive, damn sure l would. They lost me when they clung onto what was their flagship offering , server behaviours and didn't update them to bring a more modern set of options to the table. They couldn't even see that and started to go off down a loopy route of wasting time introducing failed concepts instead of concentrating on what DW became top dog for. It never recovered from that point forward. Whoever was product manager at the time must have had a background in selling fish because they certainly had zero idea in what their customers wanted despite having a great focus group telling them what they wanted........ignorance is bliss.
