Change default file from index.html

I do not know where else to ask, so I'm having to ask here.

I do not want index/html to be the file that opens when a user goes to a site.  Instead I want the file/Doctors/doctor.html to open.

I have looked at .htaccess but ALL that using this gives me is 'file not found'.  Can anyone help me?  In case it is significant, the site is hosted on Godaddy.com.

Have look here: http://www.instant-web-site-tools.com/html-redirect.html

But I think Google doesn't like redirects...
