Database connection with ip instead of url...

I need to set up a connection with my database on the ip address temporarily as the url cannot be moved yet to the new host.  I've set it up like the screenshot below, but I get "An unidentified error has occurred".  I've done this before in the past.  I just can't remember the settings that I used.  And, for example the ip address looks something like this to connect to the temporary site:  http://00.00.000.000/~example

Thanks in advance!

Just put the IP address into the MySQL server field.

I've typed in the ip address, such as 00.00.000.000

I've typed in the ip address with the username:  00.00.000.000/~example

I get "Errors encountered when connecting to your database"

"An unidentified error has occurred"

"Click the 'Define...' button and correct the connection issues before continuing."

I think I've just decided to build the database locally and upload it all when finished. However, if there is an answer to this, it would save the extra steps!
