DESIGNING FOR AN INTRANET???

am working at a school and they have asked me to develop an intranet website.

I have designed php and sql sites in the past but i was wondering if there is anything i need to do differently for an intranet?

Will i be able to use a sql database stored on the net?

i currently use easey php to run my laptop as a server - using apachie, can i do this on the schools network and on the intranet?

what security risks will this give me? obviously this is a school and i need to be carefull.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

True... but, depending on the company's rules/regs, not all of their
employees may have internet access while they would have intranet access.
Those employees would not be able to access the data being pulled from
internet (unless some sort of local caching was going on in-house). My point
was more to the effect that it sounds like the designer/developer and the
client are not having a full dialogue in terms of what the needs are for the
client and what resources are available for the designer to utilize. I would
think that such a dialogue would be crucial to the project's development.

Thanks very much... I am actually training to be a teacher, i'm doing a PGCE, i have just been placed at this school, I was asked to look at developing the intranet site. There is a totla mish mash of systems running here so i just wanted to see if the skills i have in php and sql can be used here. I will find out what systems they have in place and try and work somethimg out.

i would like to know more about the:

integrated
authentication (or at least, not use anonymous access), which lets you give
users access to network resources via the intranet with more security and
control

and how this might be done? any special code or software?

thanks again for all the help.

But, the answer is "yes" you will be able to do this.

shouldn't you be asking your client what they have available on their
internal network for you to use?

yes. you need to first talk to your client, find out their needs, find out
what resources they have for you to use. If they don't have items that you
can use, what are they willing to purchase? etc, etc, etc.

You do exactly what you'd do for an internet site, for the most part.
The real difference on an intranet is that you can use integrated
authentication (or at least, not use anonymous access), which lets you give
users access to network resources via the intranet with more security and
control. You can sometimes depend on a certain hardware setup (though with
a school, I imagine there's a hodgepodge of different computers), which can
let you use features only supported by IE, etc.

Rather than have the school install things, why don't you find out what they
already have available?
