Dreamweaver Flipping Page extension

My client wants to have his bi-monthly magazine on his web site. We have placed all the pages of the magazine into .pdf format with a file size of 19MB. There are 62 pages to the magazine not counting front and back cover. Undoubedly this is too large. I've been reading about some page turn extensions and wonder if that would be an answer or solution to optimizing the magazine size. Or would it be better to turn all pages into single .jpg files and then work with the page turn software extension.

Any ideas regarding this would be appreciated - be it extension suggestions, or just plain other suggestions to optimize the size of the magazine for web purposes.

Hi...

If you're still looking for a fast page flipper, Portfolio is ready. It can flip single or facing page documents using one of several javascript tranition effects. Pages are saved as image files and are downloaded as they're needed. Following pages are pre-cached as the user is viewing a page, so flipping is seamless and fast.

The 16 page magazing I created was 1.7 mb for medium quality jpg images. A 64 page mag would run about 6.5 mb. The size of a document doesn't really matter because the pages are only downloaded as they're needed. Don't have to wait for the entire mag to download.

Because it's a javascript flipper it isn't as elaborate as some that are out there, but it's compact and fast. More info at http://www.actionscafe.com/info-more-details2.html#PO.

Something I would like to add to my above reply.

I tested the first draft of this Behavior in Firefox, with a magazine I designed using InDesign. Portfolio seems to work fine. The HTML page was set up as a spread using two single pages. As you view one spread, the next one is pre-cached in the background making the pages snap on. The browser's zoom in and out feature allowed me to get in close to the text.

This should also work in iPads and iPhones becasue Portfolio is pure Javascript. Here is a link to the QuickTime screen capture demo if anyone's interested.

As a coincidence I've been working on a commercial DW Behavior called Portfolio that is used as a page turner. Here's how it will work...

The magazine or portfolio (or any document) is prepared in Adobe InDesign, then the pages are exported as jpg files which are automatically numbered. These files are then stored in a folder that is given the same name as the magazine.

Your HTML page can be designed as one or two single pages, or a single spread. You use image placeholders to display the pages, or put them inside AP Divs for more flexible positioning. Put forward and backward controls (graphics) on the page. Portfolio is then attached to these graphics as onClick events. Clicking the controls loads the next page(s) into the image placeholders. As for linking to the jpgs, you simply enter the folder name and the root name of the numbered jpgs and the images are loaded automatically by Portfolio.

I used the default InDesign export settings and got jpgs about 110K in size for an 8 1/2 x 11 document. 64 pages would be about 7MB. The jpg compression could be adjusted to make even smaller sizes.

The Behavior is very simple to set up. There are no fancy, page turning transition effects yet but maybe in a future revision.

I am in the same boat, and if you could forward me help on using the html version it would be a great help my magazine is ball mill was using the Page flip on Jalbum and acutually purchased it but it was way to hard to figure out. Anyone with help on this issue please drop me an email

This isn't an extension... but if you have Adobe inDesign, it's a

ctually pretty easy to make one. Then it will be exported as a swf.

Been using it for a year and, with a bit of Flash knowledge, it does the trick. The hard part is preparing the pages - scan, go into Photoshop, re-size etc.

One more question. My client has two sites and wants this page flip functionality on both sites. Additionally, he wants his past magazine issues to have page flip on them for his archive.

Can I purchase the 25 Euro version for these wants/needs? Or what version do I need to purchase?

Yup, the 25 Euro flip component will do that. Your back issues are also no problem. As I say, the main task is preparing your pages (black text on white is not as easy as it appear - you will probably have to mess with the Brightness/conrast settings in Photoshop). Save as .jpg only, re-size according to the page layout (remember that you will have an 'open' publication so allow for page width x 2).
Getting it onto your page in Dreamweaver can be a bit tricky - Flash will produce around 5 files including an HTML file. you need to prepare your new page in DW, go to code view, open the HTML file and copy all the code between <object> and </object> and paste it into the DW page code.
I didn't touch the page-flipper prog. for a few months and forgot most of the process so I did myself a walk-through in Word which I can send you if you mail me? Text
