So, I've been rocking along, finding ways to work with DW 2017 and up pops the update notification from CC. Because I tend to always install the latest version of my software, I do so. Imagine my surprise when, after launching this newest version, the entire UI is blank. I can see the minimize/maximize/restore/X on the top right and that's it.
After playing around a bit, I click on the restore button to take it out of full screen mode and suddenly I have menus. I maximize and the windows stay in place.
This should have been my warning.
When working on a site I've been editing for a few days, this version doesn't refresh. Sometimes it just hangs and then refreshes. Sometimes it freezes.
I'm not an web authoring expert, but the fact is, I use DW so I don't have to be.
I seem to recall the "notable" feature in the description of the new release was email creation for campaigns. While that's nifty, I really with Adobe would stop adding functionality to its products at the sacrifice of performance and stability. Having been in high tech for a few decades, I also get that you need to be cutting edge to compete. But this is also very frustrating for users who feel a constant need to upgrade computers and other resources.
I also realize this is a sort of rant, and at the same time, normal system cleanup and rebooting didn't fix the problem. So, it's only half a rant.
Apparently the next update fixed the problem. Or at least that's what seems to be the case.

HINT: Try restarting your computer after updating CC. It really makes a difference.

I have found that Dreamweaver does not react kindly to code errors. Because I have not experienced the problems that you are having, I am wondering if the code errors are the source of your problems, particularly when you state that you are not a web authoring expert.
On that note, I do not agree with, by using Dreamweaver, you do not have to have to be proficient at coding.

To add to what Ben has written above, the target user for Dreamweaver has changed. It is now a program aimed at the designer who wants to code, and not somone who thinks they do not need to learn how to code.

I appreciate the comments. I am admittedly a designer first, and (basic) coder second. That said, since immediately upon launching the program, the UI is not rendering (i.e., the menu bar is absent, screen dialogs absent, etc.), I don't think it's necessarily an issue with the pages I'm editing, but the program itself. Performance is sluggish at best. I have watched over the last three decades as Adobe has continued to pour more and more "feature" in to their products, some of which I like very much. But the stability of the products has suffered.

I cannot disagree with your comments about stability, and Dw 2017 has more than its fair share of stability problems. They have added and removed so many features since moving to CC versions, that nothing works as it should, (my opinion) it has i think finally reached the point of no return, and a full rewrite is required.
I'm certainly in the minority though in thinking that, and my opinions about the development of Dw and the feaures it is missing will never be addressed by Adobe, or considered by the Dw development team for future versions. That is also something i have been saying for a number of years, and i can only suggest that you hope that future releases improve, and Adobe aspires to fixing all the problems that very many users have complained about since Dw 2017 was released.

Just to add to Paula's view, and she is not in the minority, I also have my issues with Dreamweaver the difference being that I am perhaps more pragmatic. If I find that a program will not do what I want it to do, I grab another tool that will.
As an example, I find that Find and Replace is a woeful feature in the current version of Dreamweaver. I grab an older version of Dreamweaver that does work properly.
Past examples include using Brackets/Sublime Text, Prepros and Filezilla.
The good part is that the Dreamweaver team is listening and are doing their best to iron the problems out. You can make your problems known by going to Help > Submit Bug/Feature Request,
Edit:
When I find a program that suits my workflow better than Dreamweaver, I will not hesitate to switch.

Thank you Ben,
The problem is i have done the last option you mentioned, and switched to another program, though i am the first to admit that i regret Dw no longer matches my requirements. It was a good program, and simple to use.
I cannot agree with your comments about the Dw team listening though, but then again i know i can be difficult to please

I switched as well for the most part when building a website however DW its not totally shot away. I unfortunately had to update some biggish ugly (tabular data) tables for some time tables yesterday. I went back to DW because I found it far easier editing that kind of thing in design view.............so as I keep saying its the one thing for me that keeps it alive.
Yes, I could have done it in the other program but it would have taken far longer.
Come on - surely other IDEs must see some advantages to a having an optional visual enviroment available.

Hi Clayton,
Just to be sure, did you try restarting your computer? The other cases where we have seen sluggishness in DW is because of files being hosted on a remote drive.
If you still need help, send me your Adobe ID, location, and phone number over a private message. Click my picture and use the Message button. The team can investigate the issue for you and log a bug if required.
Thanks,
Preran

Yes. I've rebooted (several times, actually). My files are located on a second internal hard drive in my laptop, so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm going to create a restore point on my other laptop, update to this version of DW and see if I have the same problems. Maybe it's the first computer, although everything was working fine until that update...
