DW Search feature: Find in whole site

Explorer ,
Apr 25, 2017 Apr 25, 2017

Hello Adobe,

I updated to the latest 2017.1 last week.

Your search feature no longer makes it possible specify "find in: Current Document | Open Documents | Folder | Whole site" - only in current document. I also don't seem to be able to specify case sensitivity for the search.

How do I get the old search feature back?

Let's say that I have 10 directories with many sub-folders, and hundreds of files scattered around in the application.

Let's say that I am very busy and pressed for time.

How do I search all files and folders for a particular string?

I have to use some other software, right?

I haven't updated, but others have mentioned a Find Menu that holds things like that now.

Here's all the new stuff...

I just ran the update to CC 2017.1.

Find in Entire Current Local Site is now under the new top menu bar item Find > Find & Replace in Files or Ctrl + Shift + F

The Find in Tag is back too and it's under the Advanced tab of the new Ctrl + Shift + F find dialogue.

WTF! It's not intuitive where to find in a specific Folder. CTRL + SHIFT + F is not a usual shortcut.

Why you don't change to CTRL + F only, and put a link to "Advanced Find"???

Why complicate?

We are in 2018 and I think many people have the same problem... YET!

Also, we can't paste the folder adress anymore - now we have to navigate the file explorer to get until the folder we want to specify. This is too boring! WTF2!!!

Adobe, please change it! I use a lot of this feature...

Just hop into Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts and swap them.

Personally, I haven't used Ctrl + Shift + F in the last 9 months or so, I changed it almost immediately after replying to this post last time.

Ya, I was using CS6 and I changed to CC now... lol I would Edit my answer to this post, but it was blocked... I found where to put the folder adress now... it's in the Advance tab mode.

Thank you!

The search entire site function is very useful.

Suggestion - Make easier to search in specific site folders.

It takes a lot of clicks to get to a specific folder

Example: C:\wamp64\www\vault17\wp-content\themes\vault17

I really wish y'all would stop messing with this feature.  It used to be so easy.  Basic and advanced was one menu accessed by cmd-F.

One click to switch between modes and a quick dropdown for the range.

Now I have to press 3 keys instead of 2 to get to the advanced menu.  Click on a tiny icon- (what is that anyway?  a tornado?)  which opens a drop-down with check-boxes?   How many of Nielsen's usability precepts do you have to break before marketing calls it an improvement?

Do any of you actually use this tool?

I'm uninstalling 2018 and I may just stop using DreamWeaver altogether.

My response is not meant to be directed at anyone in particular other than Adobe itself, because, like seriously....

I have used Dreamweaver since the Macromedia days... so going on about 17 years now... (been doing web dev for over 20 years) and the more updates your company applies, the worse this program becomes. Not trying to be mean, but as someone who is very good with software and does a lot of training, you have made nearly all of your programs more and more difficult for the end user - from UIs that are so tiny I need a magnifying glass to see them (and therefore search YouTube [a coder's best friend] to find a fix), to something as simple as searching for text, and I won't even go there with Acrobat Pro (NIGHTMARE - like on friggen Elm Street - like slice and dice me, Freddy, because I'd rather have that, than deal with the UI for Acrobat Pro).

I use Dreamweaver in the split view and mainly work in the code. I have attempted numerous numerous (yeah, that needs repeating) times to get the search option to do what I need it to do - simply find three letters of text NOT within an 'a' tag. I entered the three words, selected text within the filter, and selected text (Because I'm looking for.... TEXT... - yes, I know your image has [any tag]) as the - erm attribute???  Not sure since your interface doesn't tell me what this selection is actually supposed to be for??? *scratches head and tells herself it figures* - and no dice. Tried again with something I know would be in there - like the word 'the.' A big fat ZERO once again.

Went to the help, and well, no help there...

Closed the program (even though I was in the middle of four pages of code and had to make sure I remembered where I left off - friggen PIA, I tell ya)... And another NADA - I'm on a winning streak, cantchya tell? I bet you'd love to place a bet on me... go on, you'd win big time...

Did more research, and even my BFF YT came back with a goose egg - because for some incredible reason people are under the impression that the search option is within the Edit menu, and they show us how easy it is to do this. "Oh, you mean, how easy it USED TO BE? Yeah, yeah *snorts* I know, right????" Hmmm, wonder why that is???? Perhaps because that's the way it's been for - I dunno - years, and years, and years????

And then I peeked at your actual Find menu.... uhhh, yeah... not even going there.... because what the heck are those supposed to be or mean???

So, decided to try again this time selecting [any tag] in the attribute (??) drop down, and 'ignore white space' in the filter. And guess what?? I came back with the text in ALL 144 pages. Wanna know why? Because there is a link in the menu with that text in every... single... page....

So, tell me, how do I get back a result of JUST the text WITHOUT the <a>? Within the advanced selection, I added the option for 'Not inside tag' and selected the 'a' tag and also the 'link' tag. Tried this with the filter to text only and then with ignore white space, and still, it totally ignores the text I'm looking for and just goes and FINDS <a> tags...  In fact, it froze up everything, because you know, like every single link was being returned in the results, because in the advanced window, it doesn't pay attention to what I actually want to find, it's just looking for anything. Like, can I bash my head against my desk now so I can put myself out of my misery, because this is just hurting my brain too much.

Sooooo.... poop.... I guess I'll have to go back to the old days (like way, WAAAYYYYYYY OLD dayzzzz) and manually find it myself. *composes email to her boss to let her know this project is going to be a week late because I have thousands of lines of code to go through to find THREE SIMPLE WORDS OF TEXT that AREN'T within a link or, erm, <a> tag* Yeah, he's gonna love that....

Great job, Adobe (*pats you on the shoulder*). You've done so wonderfully for your customers... <_<

*is SO grateful she NEVER upgraded to CC with her personal Adobe software, because her personal laptop would'be been thrown out the window by now, because why would she be willing to spend all that kind of money on something that makes her life so difficult, when it's supposed to actually be... helpful????*

Excuse me while I go spend some time with my nine month old puppy. She might jump on me, and her claws may scratch me, and she loves to use those teeth of hers on my fingers, but that's much more tolerable that putting up with a program that can't even do a simple search for three words...

And thinking about my puppy helped, because, you know, the letter 'P' (no... she didn't pee, silly... *snorts*).... changed the options within the Basic window to 'entire local site' and selected 'p' from the attributes drop down. And then chose Text Only from the filter. And FINALLY it worked.

Jeez, I need a drink. Anyone wanna get me a beer? Or maybe some fireball. yeah, that'll work. Ugh, now I only have 15 minutes left in the day... have spent hours on this. smh

Have a wonderful day!

Selecting "Find and Replace In Files..." from the top menu bar stopped working for me (in one of the previous Dreamweaver updates). The dialog bos (Basic and Advanced) would no longer produce results. This was frustrating becuase I was trying to use the tool to find text that I knew was in the soucre code, and Dreamweaver was saying zero instances could be found.

The search method that finally worked for me was highlighting the text in Code view, right-clicking, and choosing "Find and Replace in Files..." This worked and it's now the only way I'm able to produce search results for the entire site.

Hope this helps someone.

I've never seen that particular problem with DW before.

Have you tried restoring the preferences file?

That will usually clear up all kinds of weird happenings with the program.
