Help need to create a site map in Dreamweaver cs5

hi all

i am looking to find out how to put together a site map for my website ( http://www.gmanwebdesign.com ) and other. is there a feature in dreamweaver cs5 to help or can someone recommend one.

as you know i am still in early stages of web design / dev and all your help and tips are greatly appreciated.

in this thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/582456 mhollis55 said, that creating a site map is taken away from CS4. In my CS5 I couldn't find these functions neither, I found this feature in my old CS3(!) however. Here are some links where you can create a site map:

its a shame it not in dreamweaver CS5 as an extension,

You're right! It is a pity that DrW has recently renounced the possibility of automatically generating a site map (thanks for your links, I like these pages). Our thread reminds me to this and therefore I'll qoute David Powers' recommendation:

Well, the Site Map feature has been disabled rather than removed.

If you're feeling adventurous, try

Mac:

1. Go to your user folder > Library > Preferences 2. Open “Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 (or CS5) Prefs” in a Texteditor 3. Search for sitemap 4. Replace FALSE with TRUE 5. Save the file, restart DW

Windows:

1. Click on start

2. Select Run

3. Type regedit and click ok

   -> the registry opens now

4. Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Adobe > Dreamweaver CS4 (or CS5) > Feature Management

5. In the right part of the window double click on Site map

6. Set Site map to True

    -> When you now start DW the site map is enabled again

Once the sitemap setting has been changed to "TRUE": You access it from the "Files Panel", in the 2nd drop-down menu. (The one that has "local view" and "remote view".) You should now have a "map view".

After changing the reg-key,

To access "Set as home page": open the site files panel, click the small icon in top right corner that has a small down pointing arrow beside 4 or 5 horizontal lines, select Sites, and there it is.

many thanks for this information. Could you please give me a screenshot of your DW where I can find this:

You know because of the differences to my German DW.

On the other hand, ther are some more TRUE/FALSE choices:

I set for example "timeline" to true, without knowing if it will help or not.

Site Map: TRUE is all that you need, Hans.

Okay, I got as far as changing the FALSE to TRUE (had to unlock the file with "get info")

I can see the site map view, but the option to Set as home page is greyed out.

When I select Save Site Map, it tells me that the pict format is unsupported.

(MAC, latest version, CS5) This is what the file looks like if I append the .xml extension. (little y's with umlauts)

i have done what you said and yes i can see the it from the "Files Panel", in the 2nd drop-down menu.

how do i use this feature now i have turned it on?

OK, I think the directions here are a little unclear.

In order to "set homepage", you have to switch out of the Map View and back to Local View.  Select your home page from the file list, then click on the menu arrow, go under Site and you should be able to select Set as Home Page.

You can also do this (and a bit easier IMO) from the expanded local/remote sites window.  Expand the window, then click the file tree icon at the top of the page.  If you click and hold you will get the options of "Map only" or "Map and files"... choose Map and files.  Now you can select your homepage from the file list, then go under Site (in the top menus) and select Set as Home Page.  The visual site map should update.

BUT, now I'm up to what I was really looking for out of this tool... how do I save this as an XML sitemap?  Isn't that what this thread was all about?  I see I can save the sitemap as a bmp or png but that isn't going to help me submit to Google, is it?

Try this Free Dreamweaver (exchange) extension called Ordinary Site Map.

Once the extension is added (installed thru Extension Manager) it will generate a site map html page page with sitewide html doc file names and links in CSS formatting.

It is simple to use and works with Dreamweaver CS5.5

You may want to change the doc file names to each specific page summary name. Ex. "index.htm" to "Home Page", etc. But not much more work is needed.

*Also you may have to do a "find and replace" in the document to change the source code ":" to "/" for the links to work after putting the page to the server.
