How to save php files w/out testing server?

New Here ,
Dec 07, 2006 Dec 07, 2006
Don't shoot me, I'm totally not a techie. I know HTML pretty well, but not php. But I did take over maintenance of a site built with php. I use DW MX and never installed php. The site doesn't do anything dynamic, but it does use includes. This is all fine, but here's the problem:

My client bought DW8 and is now taking over maintenance himself. He's less techie than I am, by the way, but he has used DW4 without problems. So he's trying to play around with the site, creating a new file and saving it with his DW8. But he gets an error message saying that he's supposed to define a testing server. I told him to go into the edit sites section and specify "none" for server model and access (that's how I have it set up with my DW MX). He said he tried that and it still won't let him save his files.

So is there some way to tell Dreamweaver that even though he's using a .php extension, the files don't need to be tested locally? I'm having a tough time helping him with a product I don't even have.

Thanks.

Tell him to enable temp files in his preview in browser preferences.
That'll do the trick for him....

Have him IGNORE the error message by clicking NO.

He did try clicking No and that didn't help. I asked exactly what happens (since I don't have the software myself) and here's what he said:

quote:

When I try to display the php page (with the testing server options shut off), DW says “To preview pages containing server-side code, you need a testing server. Would you like to specify one now?”When I click no, DW displays a download dialogue box that says it’s downloading a php script. After the script is downloaded, nothing happens. I’m not sure if anything is actually downloaded. Once the download dialogue box says it’s finished, I’m returned to the original web page in design/code view.

I'd like to be able to help him. Any other ideas?

It's not on saving - it's on preview.
