Insert HTML option Grayed Out

Participant ,

Hi,

I'm new to Dreamweaver. I'm trying to edit an ePub, but when I go to Insert>HTML (at the top of the page) everything is greyed out. I made sure I'm clicked in the code section, but it won't let me insert anything. When I go to the insert panel, it only shows some of the tags, and while they're able to be inserted, I really need the nonbreaking space tag. I know that it's   but when I insert it manually, iBooks says   is invalid. I'm not sure if using the insert feature will help, but I'd like to try. Does anyone know why the options are greyed out and/or, how to get all the tags listed in the menu at the top of the page to be listed in the Insert Panel?

Because it's not an HTML file.  XHTML is not the same.

While I thank you for the article, I don't see anything in it about why the Insert HTML would be greyed out.

It might help us to help you if we could see a screenshot of your code & workspace.

Use the Print Screen key on your keyboard.

Paste it into a web forum reply.  Don't use email, it won't come through.

The article is a bit subtle, but it boils down to the fact that if you open a file that is not HTML based like a file with .htm, ,html or a server side file like .php, which is my server, then Insert > HTML will not be functional.

Which file are you editing to where you want to insert HTML code?

Pardon the blue boxes. I'm not sure exactly how much of the text I'm allowed to share online.

I can't tell much from your screenshot because you've opened up all the menus.

This is what my screen looks like with a .html file open.   My Document toolbar is set to Design, not Live even though I am in Code view.  Are you working with an .html file?

Mine is set to live, but even when it's in Design, the html options are greyed out.
