ISP upgraded DB server to SQL 2005, now I can't connect

Community Beginner ,

Hello,

I'm hoping someone has seen this before and can provide some insight:

My ISP upgraded to SQL 2005 (without telling me, but that's another subject!)

Anyway, whenever I try to connect to the database while working on a page that had a previously working connection, it errors out with:

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Invalid Instance()).]Invalid Connection

They said this was because I was using Dreamweaver 8. I didn't believe them but upgraded anyway because it was time to.

This happens when I try to view the data through the Bindings area, or to make a new connection on a new page. Working an ANY page with a data connection causes the entire DW app to slow to a crawl, presumably while it tries to connect in the background.

This was all working when I was using SQL 2000 and DW8 - I'm now on SQL 2005 and CS3 and am totally dead in the water. The ISP guys are scrambling to find something, or at least they say they are. (Network Solutions, if that helps.)

Can anyone provide help or suggestions?

Thanks!
Paul

Hello all,

Thanks for replying and trying to help... much appreciated!

I found a solution, here is it:

Tech Support at Network Solutions directed me to this article to configure the SQL Server Client Network Utility:

http://toshimo.org/sql2005alias.html

It worked great, I'm back in business, and all is good!

Thanks again for your time and willingness to help.

I would guess that this is all in your connection string. Try changing it
to:

'servername.domain\instance'

Go to www.connectionstrings.com and use an SQL 2005 connection string,
as they can be different from pervious versions.

If you were using ODBC I would change to a connection string.

Paul, as others said, try the connection string site... but this is similar
to what I use on one site for a connection to an MSSQL2005 db on a different
server than my site is hosted on...

MM_connSQLcontent_STRING =
"Provider=SQLOLEDB;Server=serverdomainname;Database=databasename;UID=dbusername;PWD=dbpassword"

Of course! 2005 has remote connections turned off by default...doh!
