After I build a site I have local content that is superfluous such as test pages and unused images. Is there a way to determine which files (pages, images, etc) are not linked to anything on the web site and don't need to be uploaded to the server?

Find unused assets with Dreamweaver's Link Checker. See screenshot.

to complete what @Nancy OShea said, once the search (Ctrl - F8) will be done, you will have to filter by the pop up menu to get the orphaned files... BUT... act with care because, all images, linked by database, or CSS, or any extrnal host that wont be a direct plain HTML link will be displayed...
so i.e I have a small web site, that display this result...
so, belive me, or not, but I wont delete and removed the 1153 orphaned files 🙂

Dreamweaver only works on local site files.
I use other tools for tracking unused files on remote server. The one I use crawls dynamically generated files and sends a report to my email. It can optionally remove unused assets from server too, if I allow it.

The screenshot is from Dreamweaver. Not the tool I use for unused assets on remote server. Two different things.

Thanks again Nancy. Is the tool you referenced previously something commercially available?
