Mandatory multi-factor authentication (MFA) for Google Cloud access

Just received this notice:

Starting May 12, 2025, you will be required to use multi-factor authentication (MFA), also known as 2-Step Verification (2SV), to access Google Cloud console, gcloud CLI, and Firebase console. You’re receiving this notice because you have access to projects on Google Cloud.

This helps protect your account by requiring both a password and an additional form of verification, such as a phone, security key, or Google Authenticator code, when signing in.

This seems to be an industry-wide practice now.  A few months back, I had to set-up something similar to access Amazon (AWS).

Using anything less than 2-factor authentication for security is on par with having no security at all.

It's just too easy for the bad guys to get ahold of UN/PW info, mom's maiden name, and the name of your first pet. At bare minimum messing up an account, and at worst causing total financial ruin.

AI isn't just being used to make naughty pics of celebrities who never bared it all for the camera, write essays for lazy high school kids and undergrads, or fix terrible emails for luddite coworkers. Criminals are getting more and more sophisticated as the technology changes. The bad guy's jobs are getting far easier the longer people stay with UN/PW as their only security. 

Everything that can have 2-factor set up on, needs it.
