needing help

am trying to connect to a database, to return seach results. have never done it before, have seached the net for help and understand how the basic functions of ODBC abd SQL works. and have found the help files on dreamweaver and followed them. however i can't seem to get them to work, im going around in circles. following the applications tab in creating database connection, coming up short at the meun stage. i haven't created a HD based server yet for testing, because like i say i'm having problems getting pass menu stage. is there a simple way of doing a database connection and search ?
am using dreamweaver mx on mac.
