New Site Management

Community Beginner ,
Jan 26, 2009 Jan 26, 2009
I have a few non Dreamweaver sites in their own folders collectively in a folder HTML. I created a folder ...HTML/Pryapus for a new site. When attempting to create a new site while using new site wizard and advanced options I get an error msg stating that the root folder I have choosen for Pryapus site is within another site and problems may exist. I am unable to get Dreamweaver to place the site within Pryapus. I am using version 8.0.2
Thank you very much

Is the folder you selected as the root of Pryapus (hmmm...) within the root
folder for another defined DW site?

How many sites do you have defined in DW? What is the exact path from the
root of your hard drive to the pryapus folder?

ACE: I have two existing Dreamweaver sites.
Path for new pryapus site: My Computer/C:/Docs & Settings/owner/My Docs/section1/html/pryapus

My two Dreamweaver and notepad designed sites follow the same path EXCEPT each has its own folder such as
My Computer/C:/Docs & Settings/owner/My Docs/section1/html/other site

Thanks, frank

This looks OK. But I can tell you for certain that if you did not have one
site defined inside another one, you would not be getting the warning. As
Danilo suggests, having nested sites can cause problems with the use of the
SYNCHRONIZE function, so I'd like to see you get to the bottom of this.

The message will appear if that is so, but Dreamweaver won't actually stop you from doing it. I do it on most sites I work on.

Danilo, Thanks for your reply. Having a root folder within another site not cause problems when working on either site? Are you saying that my designated folder and new site options would over ride that warning msg? Thanks for your patience and expertise. frank

Having a site within a site can cause some problems, but is generally ok. One area that it can cause an issue is with templates. If you have a template in the "outer" site named the same as a template within the "inner" site, then if you update the outer template, when Dreamweaver updates the templates, it may (likely?) update the template child pages within the inner site.

I'm sure that there are other issues, such as check in/out or synchronizing files that may be impacted.

Another issue could be uploading, especially if the remote sites for the inner and outer sites point to different locations on the remote site as you may upload files to incorrect locations.

If you get the warning message, you can click Ok or cancel, cancel allows you to make changes, OK lets you create the site. You do have the option to "don't warn me again" which should allow you to not see the warning in the future.

Right - me too. Well, not on most, but on many.

ACE and Danilo, This is getting really weird.
The first thing I wanted to do within the new site was try for the first time to create and use a template throughout a site. So there is a danger involved in my situation.
1. I closed everything down and rebooted my computer and reloaded Dreamweaver and tried to create a new site.
2. First thing I noticed that the wizard window had the name of the site prefilled with "unnamed site 2." What and where is "unnamed site 1?"
3. I changed the name to pyrapus and completed the options as far as where data and image files are to be stored.
4. Upon clicking OK I was again given the same caution msg about it being within another web site. The recipient site is a NON Dreamweaver site - if that matters.
5. I then moved that entire offending site and its folders to a renamed location.
6. Rebooted my computer and now Dreamweaver WILL NOT LOAD. I wanted close to 15 minutes for it to come up. All I did was try to hide that particular site and see if I then could create that new site in its own root.
Your continued patience and assistance will be MOST appreciated. frank

Did you uninstall DW before reinstalling it?

Search your hard drive to find "Unnamed Site 1".

The recipient site?

Anyhow, once again, please give us the names of all the sites you see listed
in your site list of the File panel (or in Site Manager). And please copy
and paste the contents of the path to the Local root folder from each site's
Local definition.

How did you do that? With Finder/Explorer?

ACE: Thank you VERY much for your patience and understanding. After my last post I was exceptionally pleased you didnt cash in on me. However, everything is as it should be: DW08 is now WORKING as well as created a new site IN my designated folder. Spent the entire day trial and erroring - I am only offering this so you know I was not being rude and ignoring your efforts.
FYI,
a. DW08 would not load after moving some of my web site folders around.
b. was unable to find "unnamed site 1" by searching hard drive
c. Uninstalled DW08, reinstalled DW08, still would not boot and uninstalled it again.
d. Opened DWMX and reduced the number of sites in manager to 2.
e. Opened new site successfully in DWMX by renaming "unnamed site 1".
f. Closed DWMX
g. reinstalled DW08 and created new site using locations set up in DWMX.

Again ACE thank you very much. Have a great day.
Respectfully, frank dillman at frankdillman.com
