Unable to Create a New Library Item in DW CC

Hello:

I haven't yet created a Library item with CC (although I have with CS5 and CS6 without difficulty). I made my first attempt today using CC.

Following what I see on Adobe's "Work with library items in Dreamweaver " page, I've tried numerous times to create a sample library item and add it to a new TEST page.

The first method on Adobe's page suggests that I select a portion of the document that I'll save as a library item. Step 2 reads:

• Select Tools > Library > Add Object to Library.

Unfortunately, "Add Object to Library" is grayed out for each selection that I choose.     (  ; - (

Adobe's second section is titled "Create an Empty Library Item." I had no difficulty creating it. . .

However, when I attempted to "Insert a library item into a document," it didn't work as expected. Dragging the new library item was successful, but the library item didn't become grayed out the way it had in CS5 and CS6. And, when I changed data in the new library item, I checked to see if the TEST page's library item had been modified (using Tools / Library / Update Current Page) but it wasn't!

Would someone please suggest what might prevent my attempts at successfully creating a functional library item?

Hi Wcamp,

Sorry to hear that you are unable to create a new library using tool panel. I am assuming you are in code or live view mode while creating a new library. Would you mind switching to the design view and check if it works? Hello, Harshika, and "Thank you very much!"

Switching to Design view enabled me to create the item, edit it, and verify the changes made to the TEST page. Hooooray! I'm again a Happy Camper.

One concern though. The new/saved library item appears in a new "Library" folder (with a capital "L"). Interestingly, the fifteen-year-old "library" folder that I've been using for this directory has a lowercase "l". Should I use the "Library" folder for this new item while also using the alternate "library" folder for the other nine library items that have been in existence for years? Just wondering. . .

I'm also wondering why Adobe doesn't update the "Work with Library Items" page that I referenced above, yesterday. It hasn't been updated for two years! I could have saved much time and prevented much frustration had that page been updated so that I'd have known to switch to Design view before beginning to create the library item.

I'm eager to hear back from you or others on both concerns.

Dear Harshika:

Although I was able to get the "Add Object to Library" prompt to become active, yesterday, I've spent most of this afternoon unable to get the library item to become a working item.

As I mentioned yesterday, the newly created library item (named "scripturePhotos-menu.lbi") automatically appeared in a new directory called "Library" (with an upper-case "L") instead of in my existing library folder called "library" (with a lower-case "l").

But there's an additional problem that I can't correct, which is driving me crazy. When I drag the library item from the assets pane to the empty space in the document's markup, I get a grayed library item that, for no apparent reason, adds a "Library/" pathway level to each page's linked URL. You can see the problem clearly in these two screenshots.

Screenshot #1 shows the markup of my library item. . .

Screenshot #2 shows the unwanted "Library/" addition to the pages' URLs, preventing them from opening when clicked, since there aren't any HTML pages inside the "Library" folder. . .

Please look at my first of many pages that need the new library item (to control the changing numerical Bible references that appear near the bottom of the page:

If you wouldn't mind helping me with this, Harshika, kindly tell me the three or four steps to take to add my new library item (shown in the first screenshot) to appear as it should on my TEST page. Thank you very much.

Also, advise me what I might have done to create the "Library" folder that appears to be part of the problem. And, tell me if I can get my new library item to appear with my other existing library items that are stored in my "library" folder.

I hope you won't mind guiding me on this process, which, over the years, had been a breeze for me when using DW CS 5 and DW CS 6.

Hello, all. I've not heard back from Harshika or another in three days. I need to rectify this "library item creation" problem that I have with DW CC.

Note: I've since removed the bogus "Library" markup that appeared on the two previously linked pages.

Would someone "in the know" please tell me how to properly create a library item that will act appropriately and be placed in my existing "library" folder, not in a new "Library" folder that I never created on my own.

At your suggestion, I'll describe here the level of tech support I received last week to resolve this "library item" predicament.

Thankfully, the functionality of my library items on a number of directories appears to be in place; the issue has been resolved.

However, the phone call and screen-sharing effort from tech support became a very challenging process for me. I suggest that Adobe adequately trains its customer-care representatives to communicate well over the phone. In my phone conversation with a technician, I needed to ask her often to speak more clearly. She spoke about terms and processes that she was very familiar with, however, I had no such familiarity with many of them. She also spoke very quickly throughout the conversation, regardless of how many times I asked her to slow down and repeat what she'd said. Further, her accent was very strong, making it difficult to understand what she was telling me, causing me to ask her to clarify her comments. She ought to have been trained much better regarding telephonic communication so she could have offered satisfactory customer care.

Another disappointment dealt with her inability to tell me what she was doing and what each of her steps was attempting to accomplish. She'd initially asked if I'd permit her to use the cursor to make changes to my files; I agreed. However, without saying anything to me through the entire process, she made numerous changes that I couldn't follow, make note of, or understand. There was no follow-up explanation or review!

Here's what her inability to communicate well with me has cost me: Working on her own with the Bomgar screen-share app, she dragged/dropped seven of my Dreamweaver CC .lbi's that already resided in my "library" folder to a newly default-generated "Library" folder (with a capital "L", as shown in Screenshot #2, above). Sadly, after the conversation ended, and I began to activate my existing library items that she'd relocated to her new folder, I realized that she hadn't asked DW to "modify the pathways of those seven relocated .lbi's"! As a result, I spent ±twenty-two hours recreating brand-new library items to match the ones I'd already had, adding them carefully and repetitiously, all with corrected pathways, to 124 pages on two sites! I won't forget having been forced to waste that much valuable time as a result of her failure.

Lastly, before the call ended, I asked her to call me the following day to verify that my reactivation efforts were successful since I had little familiarity with what she'd done on her own to my files. She agreed and verified my time zone. Sadly, she did NOT call me on Thursday. She called me the following Monday asking if all was working well so she could close the case.

I don't blame the technician! Had Adobe trained her adequately, this tech support effort would likely have been successful while also teaching me how to handle DW CC's new process of creating a default "Library" folder (capital "L"), despite the fact that an active "library" folder already existed. Further, I wouldn't have had to spend so many hours rectifying the problem that her negligence had caused.

I sincerely hope that Adobe will take seriously my comments and suggestions so that its telecommunications training processes of its technicians can be improved considerably for everyone's benefit.
