There is an internal mechanism specific to Dreamweaver that allows you to export and then import your site settings between different computers... or versions of Dreamweaver. This mechanism is described in the online help at https://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/using/import-export-dreamweaver-site-settings.html.
However, porting a site from version CS5.5 to CC21... is a matter of features that did not exist at that time and that now adorn DW but also and above all, of features that existed and no longer exist. Therefore, your sites may no longer be supported by the new version of DW. For example, if you rely on Server Behaviors, or components, or the SPRY library... to name but a few... (especially I no longer remember what CS5.5 offered or not and which has since disappeared).
So do not uninstall your old CS5.5 version yet in any case.
Anyway, if you encounter any problems with the STE files, nothing changes at the level of the local site residing on your hard drive (local, network, shared server...) ... the local site remains the local site: https://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/using/set-local-version-site.html , and the remote site too https://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/using/files-folders.html
If you have any questions or concerns and need to switch to CC21, feel free to come back to this forum...
That said, it is important to take into consideration that DW has long since entered a phase of non-evolution... it remains stable on systems but no longer receives new features, and it is time to consider migrating to other tools.

I agree with everything Lena said. Follow that if you must update, and you should be golden.
To be clear, Creative Cloud is not an icloud setup. It's also not new, being over a decade old (created in 2011).
The current program (minimally updated since 2020 when Adobe announced they were discontinuing active development of DW) is simply delivered digitally instead of being on a physical disk. It's only called Creative Cloud because "cloud" was the quintessential buzzword at the time of its creation. It has almost nothing to do with cloud computing of any kind, less now than at its inception, with the removal of multiple online features.
The program installs locally on your computer just like all of the old versions. Your files are stored locally and uploaded to your remote server in the exact same way they were in CS5.5.
With the monthly payment, you do get some online storage and the ability to sync some settings between computers. Of the features Adobe hasn't already discontinued, the remainder isn't worth the monthly cost of a single app subscription. It evens out if you view DW as "the free web software that comes with a full subscription" to photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and the rest.

I don't think this upgrade is going to work for you. A 2012 iMac I don't believe was capable of being upgraded to Big Sur (Mac OS 11) ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/111980 ). And Dreamweaver current version requires Big Sur at a minimum to run: https://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/system-requirements.html . At this point you are looking at having to purchase a new Mac to run the current version of DW so if CS5.5 is working for you I would stick with that.
