Dreamweaver CC & php

New Here ,

So I last used dreamweaver when it was cs5. In that when I'd put <?php include_once("item.inc");?> it'd allow me to see that in the live view pane and edit it like I would any file if it had html in it. Now when I do this it doesn't, it just shows me code view. How do I get that again? I want to include raw html in a different file so things still sterile.

The way it used to work in previous versions of Dreamwever

Select the server-side include in either Design view or Code view, and click Edit in the Property inspector.

The included file opens in a new Document window.

The work-around for the current version is to click the file in the attached-files bar as in

See i use the file convention 'filename.inc' in the image you show it's filename.inc.php which has a design view ability. if i have to rename my files to include the .php at the end that's fine. I wanted more to know how to use the .inc. I'll try your answer in the morning when i get up.

Probably not a good idea to use a period within a file name. OS usually interprets a period as indicating the end of the file name and the  file type designation. If you want some sort of visible semantic to your file names, use a hyphen or underscore between parts, or interior caps ("fileName.xxx").

Please have a look at https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/905231/information-about-the-characters-that-you-cannot-use... where it states that

  • You cannot use the period character consecutively in the middle of a file name.

With the release of Windows 95, Microsoft have followed the same naming conventions of all other operating systems. Prior to that Microsoft had the 8.3 rule.

In short, a period is a character like any else. The system treats everything that follows the last period as the file's extension..

That's an article specific for what is allowed in SharePoint. ICYMI this is not the SharePoint forum. As Nancy has pointed out, more than one period in a file name is perfectly acceptable on a web server. If a browser doesn't load a file with more than one period then it's likely misconfiguration on the server hosting the file that's preventing it from loading in the browser. I hope this information has been helpful and informative for you.

OP may be able to use file.inc without an additional .php if they configure their local Apache to process .inc extensions on the server, then restart apache and Dreamweaver and see if it works. I speculate that DW is not "processing" the .inc file on the local Apache because Apache doesn't recognize it as a processable file. This is ultimately preventing it from displaying in live view. By setting Apache to process .inc files on the server, DW should be able to then "process" the file in live view.

Not sure why you are addressing this to me as I am not the one asking the question I merely gave an example of what is NOT allowed and consecutive periods is one of those.

Why should the OP not use the PHP extension? It is perfectly legal and works well with Dreamweaver.

Extra dots are widely used by CDNs too.
