Live view not working

Community Beginner ,
Feb 11, 2021 Feb 11, 2021

Hi,

I've just started out with Dreamweaver 21.1 on the latest update of Windows 10 x64, but I've been having an issue with getting live view to work. I've repeatedly tried the Ctrl+Alt+H shortcut but nothing is happening. I'm unable to select bootstrap elements in the live view window or see the property inspector at all. I needed to do a fresh install using the Adobe cleaner tool for a different problem and the issue was present then as well so I don't think it's an installation issue. I'm very new to this so it's probably something super obvious, but I just can't figure it.

Thanks for any help.

Are you 100% sure you are in Live View and not Design?

Ctrl + Alt + H doesn't do anything in Design View.

Go to Window > Toolbars and verify you have Document checked.

In the Document Toolbar, verify you have it set to Live (click the small triangle for a dropdown of Design and Live)...

Also verify you are working with clean/valid code. Live View breaks easily if something goes wrong in the source code. Visit http://validator.w3.org/nu to get a listing of any possible errors in your page. The big ones to look for are unclosed tag errors.

Restart your computer.   Refer to screenshot below.

1. DW doesn't like code errors. Are you working with an error-free HTML document as denoted by a green checkmark in a circle?

Window > Results > Validation.  Click the triangle to check document.

2. Properties Panel is also in the Window menu (Ctrl+F3).

3. Go to Window > Toolbars > Document. The Document Toolbar has both Design and Live view in a drop list.

  • Design is usually quicker for light edits while Live is slower but gives more accurate rendering of CSS styles.
  • Save work often with Ctrl/Cmd + S. Use F5 to refresh your screen.
  • To edit from Live view, click anywhere in the Live view panel until you see a gold box around the element.

All I've done is add a bootstrap navbar to an empty page so I don't think it's a code error. I am in live view as you can see here.

I'm simply unable to select any of the navbar elements and produce the gold bar or property panel. Live view seems to be acting as if it's been switched off using Ctrl-Alt-H like I mentioned before. I just can't switch it back on again.

Unless you disable scripts, navbar elements are not directly editable.

For best results, apply navar changes in code panel or switch to Design view from Document Toolbar.

Looks like your code is clean (green checkmark icon on the bottom of the document window), that's always a plus.

Hopefully, your keyboard shortcutt is either confused, or accidentally disabled.

To change Live View Displays manually...

1. Go to View > Live View Options
2. Verify "Hide Live View Displays" is NOT checked

I've tried changing the Live View Displays option manually in the view menu (turns out the keyboard shortcut actually is working as the status changes when I tap Ctrl+Alt+H) but, again, nothing is happening.

There are several items in the Navbar that are editable from within Live View. Getting zero live view displays while clicking across the items in the bar is not right.

I know you did a clean reinstall, but maybe the install is a little off?

Try restoring preferences: https://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/restore-preferences-dreamweaver.html

That tends to clear up a lot of odd behavior in DW, it might help in this case.

Ctrl + Alt + H is neither a Windows nor DW standard shortcut.  Instead, toggle view between Live/Design with Ctrl + Shift + F11.

Also please ensure your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements to run Creative Cloud + OS + all other apps you use. Check each one.

Last but not least, you need a computer user profile with administrative level permissions and read/write access to files on your primary hard drive where CC apps and local site folders reside.

Now back to the impeachment trial...

Ctrl + Alt + H is assigend by default to the Hide Live View Displays toggle. The OP isn't having issues going from Live to Design, they're having problems getting the Live View Displays to show up in the BS navbar, which should be there...

There appears to be a is a glitch in the Keyboard Shortcuts management window of the latest version of DW, where it doesn't recognize that particular Vulcan Neckpinch is already set. When you look at the menu option while using DW's default Keyboard Shortcuts, Ctrl + Alt + H is there...

Have you restarted the machine since installing the newest version of the program? If not, give that a shot too. Sometimes weird things will happen if you just start working without restarting.

Yeah, I've pretty much tried everything at this point. I think it's a wider issue with my Windows 10 installation. I tried a corrective reinstall to fix any possible problems and it's still the same. I even tried installing DW on my media centre PC and Live View displays worked perfectly there. Maddening.

Have you updated your graphics drivers recently from the card mfg's website?  I ask because Windows updates have been known to mess those up.

Yeah, that sounds like you might have some sort of conflict going on in that machine. It may be worthwhile to contact Adobe Customer Care directly. They've been able to figure out oddities like this in the past...

A word of caution: the Private Message System in this forum is a prime target for scammers pretending to be Adobe reps. Make sure you are working with a real Adobe rep. ALL Adobe staff will have an @Deleted User email address, and a STAFF badge by their name/avatar in the forum.
