I understand why Mac and Fireworks are no longer compatible, but where can I find a program that allows me to work with layered png files? From what I read, Adobe has the pattern on layered pngs. What alternatives do I have? Get a computer with a 32-bit operating system?

PhotoPea (online Photoshop mini-clone) reads Fireworks layered PNG files.
Then save as a PSD file, for example, for import in other image editors.

As already mentioned, as far as I know anyway, the only app that can open layered Fireworks PNGs is PhotPea., it is a free (web based) app with ads, you can pay a small monthly fee to have the ads removed.
If you still have access to a copy of Fireworks I can offer some commands to batch convert all your layered PNGs to layered PSDs
