Adobe flash player either hangs or crashes in Firefox

Adobe flash player either hangs up the web browser Firefox or crashes within Firefox.  This has been occurring for about a year even though Firefox and the adobe flash player have been updated and upgraded many times over the last year.  Multiple crash reports have been sent to either Adobe or Firefox (I am not sure which one actually gets the crash report) but it appears someone knows about this issue since I seem to be getting more pop up boxes from Firefox now when the Windows 7 system seems to hang (no response from mouse when I try to close the Firefox browser window).  The pop up box states that Adobe flash player is not responding or in a loop so when I respond to the pop up window to cancel the task all the flash player displays in all of the open Firefox browser sessions crash.  However, if I use google chrome and the same ESPN videos that use Adobe flash player so far I have not seen the same issue of hangs or crashes.  So, is this a known issue with Adobe flash player and/or Firefox or has it just never been fixed correctly?

Configuration:

Sony VPCF2390X - I7-2760QM - 8 GB - GEForce GT 540M - 1920 X  1200 Resolution

Windows 7 Home  Premium Service Pack 1 -  7.1.13.1088   64-bit

Firefox 23.0.1

Adobe Flash Player 11,8,800,115

Running without the Firefox extensions/plugins is just a temporary troubleshooting step.  The idea is to see if one of these is conflicting with Flash Player.  If Flash runs normally with all of them turned off, the next step is to enable a group of them and then attempt to narrow down the conflict.

As for safe mode, your system will be restored to normal mode on the next reboot.

Well, thank you for that pretty good description of EXACTLY HOW to troubleshoot plugins, which I've found nowhere else.  The key is to have flash in operation when you turn extensions and plugins back on one-by-one, isn't it.

Here's what I could replicate over and over and over: in safe mode, with all ext's and plugins turned off (except for Flash, of course), I could go to the media player at CBC (Power and Politics will do), and upon clicking the arrow to get the player to engage, everything hangs and I get the "Warning: Unresponsive plugin. Shockwave Flash may be busy or may have stopped responding."  That lasts for maybe 20 or 30 seconds, before the player finally engages (without sound, if that's important).  I replicated that on 4 out of 4 attempts.

In safe mode, with all ext's and plugins turned off, I also went to a movie site.  The movie site's media player engaged (without sound), but within a minute Flash crashed completely -- that logo of a jigsaw piece appeared, along with the message saying Flash had crashed.  That happened only once out of the three times I went to the movie site, so I was eventually able to use that movie site (running the same movie, same player), as well as the CBC player, when I tested each extension and plugin one-by-one, turning them back on.  There was absolutely no difference when I did so.  There was no hanging and no crashing at either the movie site or the CBC.

In normal mode, I also tested all the extensions and plugins.  Turning them back on one-by-one did not make the movie hang or crash.

Here's one more clue.  It's tiny, but it might have some meaning for you.  Ever since this Flash Crash problem began 6 months ago, 80% of the time that Firefox loads, the Bookmarks Toolbar fails to view.  I can make it appear by going into View, Toolbars, unchecking the toolbar (it is checked, but as I said, it doesn't view), and then checking it.

Can you post your system's dxdiag report?  Crashes like this suggest a hardware driver problem.

Thanks

One more note, Chris.  I'm looking right at my Add-ons Manager, which  tells me I've got Shockwave Flash disabled, yet I'm being pummeled about  once a minute by the message "Warning: Unresponsive plugin. Shockwave  Flash may be busy or may have stopped responding."  Everything gets hung  up: browsers, Outlook, Word.  And let me tell you, this is not the  first time this has happened.  I thought I was going insane at first -- I  must not have Flash disabled, I said, if I'm getting that message.   Well, I'm not going insane.  Your program is not responding to my  command in the Add-ons Manager.

TalkBack101, -update- I have not had any problems with Shockwave Flash since getting rid of the other Adobe applications that I mentioned.  It has only been a couple of days and a couple dozen videos that I have tested, but I would have had several crashes by this stage, prior to deleting the other Adobe programs. Yesterday I had  three CBC newsclips running simultaneously without any crash or even slowdown.  I agree that the problem is with Adobe and not my computer or other software.

The sun evidently shines upon you.  It does not shine upon me.  Apart from the Shockwave Flash plugin, Adobe Reader is the only other Adobe product I have on my computer, and that's enough to make my life hell.

@TalkBack101 - Unfortunately I can't get to your dxdiag report right now (the bug database appears to be down at the momement) but I'll try again next week or you can post the contents (it's just a text file) as a reply in this thread.

As for the Add ons manager saying that Flash is disabled, you you still see the "warning: unresponsive plugin..." message, can you navigate to "about:plugins" and copy/paste the contents of the page displayed?  You shouldn't see this if the plugin isn't being loaded.

Thanks!  It looks like your video drivers are about 7 years old.  Given the age of the machine, it might be difficult to update to something more recent.  However, it would be worth checking to see if Intel has something available.  In the case that they don't, let's try going back to a previous version of Flash Player to see if that makes a difference.

To start, let's try our last 10.3 release to see if that makes a difference.  You can grab that here:

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_10.3.183.90_archive.zip

Unzip this file and run the \10_3_r183_90\flashplayer_10_3r183_90_win.exe installer.

After installing, I'd recommend navigating to your "about:plugins" page and verifying that you are indeed using the 10.3 Shockwave flash plugin.

Chris, I've tried to update all my video drivers at Dell's website.  Their  report told me what I'm supposed to need.  I installed two updates -- AVer Media M038 - External USB PAL-SECAM Analog TV Tuner and Intel (R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver -- but there were also three false hits.  I'd start to install the three updates and I got messages such as "no compatible hardware" or "You have a more current version."  I've re-run the reports and they still tell me I need these updates, but I don't.

As for 10.3.183.90, someone already suggested that.  I did a clean install and it made no difference.  I think it was at that point I went to the labs release.

Here's a bit of insanity (that I don't actually expect to last) -- I've been on my computer for the last eight hours today, and I haven't got hung up once.  Not once.

Postscript: it didn't last.  I was hung up several times yesterday, and today was hung up the moment I turned on my computer.

Hi Chris, I hope you're still there, because the problems with the Flash plugin haven't gone anywhere at all.  I can't navigate, nothing opens -- this is not what the internet is supposed to be about.  It's like this because of your program.  There are lots of users who experience it -- they keep checking in at the Adobe Flash facebook page, at Firefox forums, at Chrome forums, at this forum.  I'll continue to work with you, but I really want you AT WORK on this problem.  One day I researched phone numbers for the Adobe Corporation.  I've lost the list, but that's what someone needs to do -- someone needs to get near the top to tell this company to throw resources at this problem (or maybe they'll be sued?)  This is unconscionable, this is dereliction of duty -- Adobe has created a product which we didn't ask for, on which we rely, which is completely screwed up and has been for years.

I was exactly where you were, and the ONLY way I found to keep Flash Player from crashing Firefox was to disable Protected Mode, as described on a number of sites, including -- http://techdows.com/2012/06/disable-flash-players-protected-mode-for-firefox.html

Also see: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071

I always re-enable Protected Mode, by deleting protectedmode=0, when new versions of Flash Player or Firefox come out, just to test, but it's always the same results -- crash, crash, crash....so I always end up disabling it again.

I was advised on the Mozillazine site, which is a help forum, but is not associated with Mozilla, the makers of Firefox, that Protected Mode offers sort of a redundancy protection.  The best protection, they advised, was to install AdblockPlus along with NoScript.  Both block potentially harmful flash-based ads from appearing on web sites.  Those, along with a good firewall and comprehensive virus protector, should more than make up for disabling protected mode.  So far, I've had no issues.

I disabled Protected Mode some time back.  I've also got hardware acceleration turned off.  I used to have AdBlockPlus until I read that plugins could be the problem.  I responded by stripping out anything that wasn't essential.  But I'm happy to give the combo of AdBlockPlus and NoScript a chance.

WHOA!  NoScript is not going to make me happy.  I don't want to lose content.  I want full access to the internet, not reduced access or no access.

HI CHRIS.  WHERE ARE YOU AT?  WE STILL HAVEN'T FOUND ANYTHING WRONG WITH MY COMPUTER.  WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?  THE PROBLEM HASN'T GONE AWAY.  THE LAST THING LAST NIGHT WAS A COMPUTER-WIDE ADOBE FLASH CRASH FREEZE.  THE FIRST THING THIS MORNING WAS A COMPUTER-WIDE ADOBE FLASH CRASH FREEZE.  WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS?

@TalkBack101 - If the problem also exists with previous versions of Flash Player 10.3, then I would suspect that something, other than Flash Player itself, has changed with your system.

The trick will be to go back to the software changes right before it stopped working.  I hoped that reverting to 10.3 would prove that it was a recent Flash Player change that caused the problem.  But if, as you report, 10.3 also exhibits the problem, then that rules that out.  We could try going back even farther than 10.3, but that would have meant that Flash hasn't been working right for you for years.

I want to help you with this problem, but please understand that we're not doing an official technical support session here.  I'm not in tech support, but Adobe does have paid support if you are interested (800-833-6687).  Please note that there is a charge for this service.

You know what, Chris?  If you're not in tech support and if the only official tech support available is paid support, that's a problem right there.  I didn't ask for the internet to be dependent on your product.  Your product is screwing up internet access for many, many people.  Your company should get the product fixed.  It's really as simple as that.

As for the possibility that they might be able to fix the problem if only I would pay them some money, I'm unemployed, I don't have money, and I suspect, like mylesfromhome, that if Paid Support had a fix, you would know about it.

As for this maybe being a problem with my computer, there's nothing that indicates that, is there.  When I run it in safe mode and conduct all the tests, it's your product that crashes.  When I run dxdiag, there's nothing wrong with my computer, is there.  I would be happy if you found something wrong with my computer, but you haven't done that, have you.

The earliest date that I can drill down to is April 9, 2013.  That was when I finally removed Avast from my computer after talking to their technicians -- believing the hanging was an Avast problem.  No, I haven't had a problem with Adobe Flash Crash for years -- although for years and years, people have had problems.  Hanging, crashing, not installing, years and years' worth of problems.  I've merely joined the ranks of the affected.

What I would like you to do, please, is provide me a 1-800 phone number of your company president or vice president, or their email addresses.  I think it's time the public talked to the corporation about your product.

Cheers.

Unfortunately, while there are reports of Flash Player bugs over the years on the internet, it's important to remember that Flash is installed on over a *billion* systems.  There are bound to be problems and we constantly make fixes to address as many of these issues that we can.  Problems and more specifically, the root causes, reported 2 years ago are usually *very* different than the ones today.  A crash reported in August 2010, while sounding similar to a problem reported today, is almost always in a completely different part of the code.

In this thread alone, I would wager that we have multiple issues going on.  All with completely different root causes, yet similar symptoms.  Some of these may be due to Flash Player itself, some may be due to incompatibilities or simply miss behaving third party software

Because this is a recent change of behavior on your system, and rolling back to an older version of Flash Player did not help resolve the problem, I believe that the problem is being caused by an external factor.  Logically, if the problem was solely with Flash Player, going back to a "working" version should resolve the problem.  This didn't happen in your case.  Maybe an incompatibility with the browser, maybe a left over artifact from your Avast install, it's hard to tell.

I'm sorry I was unable to troubleshoot and resolve the issue for you.

As for a phone number, Adobe's customer service number is (800) 833-6687.

It has nagged me that with 11.9 Beta, in safe mode with all extensions and plugins turned off (which is as pristine as I can render my computer -- yes?) I could make the CBC player immediately hang and crash every time I tried it.

If you recall, I couldn't make it crash on command at a movie site, although it did in fact crash on and off at that movie site.

Tonight, with Beta updated to 11.9.900.117, I conducted the same test with the CBC player and the player hung and crashed every time I tried it.

I then used the uninstall tool before installing and testing 10.3.183.90 with the CBC player.  The player played fine (silently, but this seems to be the way in safe mode -- I never get sound no matter what I try as an experiment).

I then turned on all my extensions and plugins one by one, and I could not get the CBC player to hang or crash.

Logically, if the problem I experience in normal mode of hanging and crashing in both versions were being caused solely by an external factor (that is, something with my computer and not your program), 10.3 would have hung and crashed in the CBC player just like 11.9.  But it didn't, did it.

That, along with the systems test "dxdiag" (which came up clean), is science, I think.  I certainly think it's closer to science than your steady guesses, without a shred of evidence, that the problem is caused by something with my computer.

I will leave 10.3.183.90 installed for now since it's obviously somewhat more operational than any newer version.  As for calling customer service, we both know where I'll get with that.  Let's say that even if they *magically! put me through to Paid Support at no cost to me, Paid Support is not going to tell me anything that you haven't.  That's because you guys don't actually have diagnostic capacity, do you.  You don't have a way of diagnosing why your product doesn't work.  You've created a behemoth that has tentacles on one billion systems, and you actually have no idea what to do when things go wrong.  The great long list of things to try out is really just stab after stab in the  dark.  As with any stabbing in the dark, occasionally you'll hit  something.  But you often won't.  Adobe technicians apparently aren't working with technicians from Firefox, Chrome, etc, yet it's where your product intersects with theirs that things fall apart.

And you have no idea what to do when things fall apart, except to keep saying that it's not your product, it's our computers.

Hi, i never had any major problem with flash player in firefox but recently i installed latest flash player debugger for some purpose and from that moment on couldn't access some flash player required site for more than few seconds, i can access some sites like magazine sites hosting their content through flash but other sites like video sites crash within seconds. The purpose for which i installed it is still incomplete because the site crashes, so what to do?

Hi TalkBack.

Further update-

Getting rid of the other Adobe applications seems to have greatly reduced the frequency of crashes, but they still continue and still crash my entire system.  I just recovered from one crash.  At the early stages I could close down other applications by alt-tabbing to them and even close Firefox this way, but nothing would let me close the Flash tab which had popped up to tell me it was not working, and when I tried doing it with Windows Task Manager, everything froze completely and I had to reboot.

Now I simply try to avoid anything with Flash content and if I do run it, I make sure everything else that is open has been saved, just in case.  I suspect that if paid Adobe Support had found a solution for anyone then I wouls also expect it would show up in the forums, given the number of people complaining about the problem.

I want to take a minute to say that I've read other Flash users complain that they're ready to throw their computer into a brick wall over this same problem.  I identify completely.  I experience the same rage.  I've been brought to tears repeatedly over this.  Often my only way out of computer-wide freezes is turn off my computer before anything has closed down.  You do that at night, you do that in the morning, you do that five or six times throughout the day, and it gives rise to automatic checkdisks that further slow me down.  Speaking for myself, after six months of hangs and crashes, I can say that Adobe Flash is ageing me.  It's seriously affecting my computing life, which means that it's seriously affecting my life, period.  There are YEARS' WORTH of complaints out there about hangs and crashes.  Your product and your company is responsible for YEARS' WORTH of user pain and rage.  GET THE ****ING THING FIXED.
