Can't delete Flash9.ocx

New Here ,
Jul 25, 2006 Jul 25, 2006
While trying to solve some Flash/IE installation problems, I have discovered that I can't delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9.ocx
I've tried safe mode, "move on boot", BartPE, and nothing will get rid of this file. The read only attribute is set and cannot be changed....does anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Thanks,

Rob

Here is the site that crashes for me:

http://ndd3.football.sportsline.com/scoreboard/live/10/4/10

I'm using Flash9 on IE7 and IE always crashes on this page.

This is a live update page.

My Daughter is trying to play on the Bella Sara website -- http://www.bellasara.com. The problem occurs when she is playing, but not before she logs in. The error is:

IE has encountered a problem with an add-on and wil have to close. Flash.0cx9.

Scott, can you make the site crash if:
-- you reboot and open ONLY Internet Explorer
-- you only have one instance of ie runnning (no multiple tabs if you're using IE7)

I wasn't able to make it crash on my XP machine, but I did have a hard time keeping my horse happy.. :(

Let me know on the above. And it would be helpful for you to open a Flash Player web support case via http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer

Well here it is 2008 and I am still one with, not just a Flash crash, my dang computer reboots. Doesn't matter if it's IE or Firefox but usually occurs when I got to Yahoo and check my email there. I can click on an email to open and read it and the next thing I know it's rebooting. I figure it has to be something with the Flash content Yahoo is using. It doesn't reboot checking my email at Hotmail or Mail.com.

Hi,

If your computer is rebooting, Flash isn't the root of the problem. Flash Player runs in the browser process and the most it can do is crash the browser. Its possible that Flash is tickling or triggering a more fundamental bug, but a modern OS will generally only crash or reboot due to a driver or hardware problem. If you're comfortable updating your audio or video drivers, this would be a good place to start.

This issue is particularly odd because Yahoo mail doesn't use Flash. The only possibility would be an occasional Flash ad, but you'll encounter these same ads anywhere on Yahoo's site.

Are you running Windows 98 as it sounds like your system is in a bad state? Reboots are simply unacceptable.

Another option is to upgrade to the newest version of Flash Player as this could help, but its unlikely to help since your problem is more fundamental.

I get this message just about every time I try to get on the internet- Microsoft has encountered a problem the add on running is flash9e.ocx. I have uninstalled and reinstalled about a million times. I can run the internet if I disable this add on however there are web sites that I can not view because of this. I am getting real tired of this and feel like letting every major news station know what a problem this is and how long this has been going on since I see postings as far back as 2005. I have gone to every Adobe try this fix and nothing has worked. I bet if your computers were crashing all the time you would fix this problem!

I'm also having the error with Flash9e.ocx. I get it when I have the combination of two sites open:

1. My Rogers Yahoo mail ( http://rogers.yahoo.com) - only when using their new mail interface
2. Chowhound - any combination of pages on their site (e.g. http://www.chowhound.com/topics/406719)

The error usually occurs for me when I am opening multiple Chowhound discussion threads at once by holding ALT and clicking on the link. I'm assuming a certain Flash ad or video on one of those pages is causing the error, but since the content is not static it's hard to pin it down.

This error doesn't occur when only one of the two sites is open - it's always in combination... does that make any sense? I've also tried uninstalling and re-installing Flash to no avail. Any new thoughs or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Well it has happened 6 times today!!!!!! I really find it hard to believe that it can not cause your computer to reboot when it is happening to so many people. What is this add on for anyway because it sure does not seem to be worth anything but shutting down your web sites and it does not matter what site I am trying to look at anything from wedding gowns to games to recipes to on line classes it just randomly screws up everything so how am I supposed to know what is causing this. Is there any other program out there that works like flash player because I am going to buy a new computer this weekend and I swear if I have to install flash9 and it shuts this one down I will file a complaint with every agency I can find.

I have experienced the same issues using the Flash 9 uninstall from Control Panel->Add/Remove programs. It appears to uninstall, but the Flash9.ocx is left in place as well as the version information in the registry. I managed to remove the Flash9.ocx by running the uninstaller (uninstfl.exe) with the -u switch, and then manually deleting the file. I'm responsible for deploying the Flash Player throughout a large corporation, and this is causing me a lot of problems.

Running Uninstfl.exe is supposed to remove Flash, but it doesn't. It would be great to see an uninstaller that actually does what it's supposed to do, I don't think that's too much to ask.

Here's the steps I followed that allowed me to successfully remove Flash9.

First reboot the machine and make sure there are no Flash applications active.
You can obtain msizap.exe from Microsoft, and Uninstfl.exe from Adobe, sorry not to
specify their download locations, but if you search the site you should be able to find the
pertinent information. Next, follow the following steps:

1. run the uninstall command:

%windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /X{BB65C393-C76E-4F06-9B0C-2124AA8AF97B} /qb-

2. run msizap:
msizap.exe T {BB65C393-C76E-4F06-9B0C-2124AA8AF97B}

3. run uninstlfl.exe twice using the following switches:
uninstfl.exe -q -u flash9.ocx
uninstfl.exe -q flash9.ocx

4. If %windir%\system32\macromed\flash\flash.ocx still exist, delete it manually

This worked for me, hopefully it will work for you as well.

***A GOOD FIX***
I was fighting with this problem for months and finally found a good fix. This is what I did:
1. Use the uninstaller at Adobe's Web site following the instructions given here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157
2. Empty temporary files and internet cache and restart.
3. Download the latest FlashPlayer version 9 from Adobe's web site here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

At this point check and be sure that you have a file named "Flash.ocx" in both your Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash folders, as well as the "Flash9.ocx" in the Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash folder. If you do, you have a good install.

4. Download Flash8.ocx from www.rrdownloads.net/Flash.zip (I suppose that file is buried somewhere on Adobe, but I couldn't find it; nonetheless, this link is a safe one)
5. Unzip the active x file into your Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash folder
6. In the same Windows folder, rename "Flash9.ocx" to Flash-9.ocx (or anything else)
7. Then rename the Flash8.ocx (from the downloaded zip file) to Flash9.ocx

Restart et voila ... no more crash errors.

Caution: This fix has worked for me on a WinXP Pro and WinXP Home O/S, running IE6. I cannot vouch for any others. I hope it works for you!

I was on myspace.com trying to access a friend's website and received the same error msg as the above users did. I built my own system, am running Windows XP Pro SP2, using Internet Explorer Version: 6.0.2900.218.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519, and have just recenty installed Windows on this systems. I have the latest version of Flash Player, which is 9.0. I'm not going to waste any/all my time trying to resolve an issue that is Adobe's problem. I'm not getting paid to fix this issue, therefore why should I have to continue to put up with it? It sucks that Adobe is providing it since it really sucks. As previous posts say, Adobe needs to again address the issue and find a resolution and once a resolution is found, needs to be provided to the users. The issue has been addressed, but why no updates or fixes with this many people having the same problem? It just doesn't make any sense. All the fixes listed above take entirely too much of my time and some of them don't even work.

This worked for me - so far anyway... Just wanted to say thanks SJesMe. I have been so frustrated by this problem. I have not been able to get the Vauxhall site http://www.vauxhall.co.uk/vx/travelandleisure/trafficnet.do?method=loadTrafficNet since upgrading to Flash9. Really frustrating as I commute round the M25 everyday and this site was really helpful. It will take a lot for me to upgrade anything from Adobe...

Followed your instructions to the letter and exactly the same thing happens except my error now says -

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: flash9.ocx
ModVer: 8.0.24.0 Offset: 000400cc

Thanks for the links. I could not get either scenario to crash, but I'll get some help from other members of the Flash Player team.

We'll provide an update once we know more. Also, if you encounter other crashes, please keep the URL's coming. Its a big help.

Hi Paul

I am having this issue on a a game site called neopets. The flash game is launched in a popup window from this URL http://www.neopets.com/games/kou-jong.phtml. I am using Flash 9 on IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 on Win XP home with service pack 2 installed. This error seems to occure randomly, but only when i am on the second level of the game (which is very frustrating, because I have to start all over again!). I downloaded Flash 9, because I was having the EXACT same problem with Flash 8.

I would get the error message "There is a problem with add-on File: Flash8.ocx and it shuts down Internet Explorer" and it would close ALL my IE windows.

So I unistalled Flash 8 using the unistaller here on your site and installed flash 9. I did this approximately 1 week ago.

I started playing my game again and again encountered the error "there is a problem with add-on File: Flash9.ocx and it shuts down Internet Explorer" Again it closes all my IE windows.

one last piece of information. I only seem to encounter this problem on this game (which is very new to the neopets website). I have played a couple other (older) flash games and have not encountered this problem. You may wish to contact their programmers and see what (if anything) they changed in their game format.

I hope this information is helpful and I REALLY hope you solve this issue soon!

thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the great feedback (and patience). We have some engineers from the Flash Player team investigating these issues that you all have reported here. The goal is to determine if we already have fixes for them. In a few weeks, I'd like your help in confirming that we have indeed fixed all of the issues. We'll have a pre-release version of the Flash Player available for testing.

Please continue to provide any additional error reports here, and the exact URL for the web page. Any background info on how often you see the issue and your configuration is also very helpful. Thanks again.
