Can't delete Flash9.ocx

New Here ,
Jul 25, 2006 Jul 25, 2006
While trying to solve some Flash/IE installation problems, I have discovered that I can't delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9.ocx
I've tried safe mode, "move on boot", BartPE, and nothing will get rid of this file. The read only attribute is set and cannot be changed....does anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Thanks,

Rob

How to delete flash.ocx: Run the command prompt (cmd). Go to the directory containing the ocx file. Type
cacls flash.ocx /R Everyone /E /C
You will now be able to delete the file.
The problem is that macromedia has sabotoged the ACL on the file (the command above will fix it). One has really got to wonder what they were thinking...

Thanks for providing a specific example. We'll take a look to see if we can experience the problem ourselves.

I've been suffering with flash9 crashes for the past several months. I'm running IE7 in XP on an ancient Dell400. The crashes have been consistent and repeatable but I havent tracked the URL's until tonight. The final straw that sent me Googling was trying to see http://www.wantedmovie.com. This is a new site. You dont need to log on. You dont need to do anything except load this and whammo! This is unacceptable!

Rather depressingly, I'd like to add to the weight of numbers here:

One window open, running the latest Flash, IE7, Windows XP Pro, AMD sempron.

http://www.miniclip.com/games/anagrammatic/en/

The site forces you to instal the latest version of Flash Player. Click on Connect so you can see the lobby then try clicking on the link that says Games Forum. Crashes my browser 100% every time (Internet Explorer has encountered a problem . . . Flash Player9e.ocx etc). Many others on this site are reporting the same issue. Also, the game freezes mid-session with the same error message.

Am I right in thinking that this thread has been open for a number of years? If so, I'm surprised. I was responsible for taking my publishing company over from Quark to InDesign about 18 months ago because I was so impressed with what Adobe were doing. I'm finding it hard to believe that a glitch in a relatively small program has gone on for so long. InDesign is fantastic: never regretted it once (and I'm happy to fill out any testimonials/ recommendations). But an official response to such an ongoing problem wouldn't be amiss in this situation don't you think?

I'll certainly be watching this thread closely: many of my colleagues suggested that we jump ship because Quark was no longer responding to some fairly pressing issues. I'm beginning to get the same impression here.

When I click on the version test link it says I have win 9.0.28.0 installed, I have only been having the addon problem since I installed the latest update which was just a littl while ago! Everyday since it has been driving me mad... if you I had not agreed to install it when the message came up...

Does anyone know what steps I could take to go back to how it was before?

this is the update I had to install: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb07-20.html

And just a note, this issue I'm having is on a laptop computer. When I log on a different user's account I get the update message. but if i go back to the main one I use than I don't get this message at all because I've already done it. Why would one account not have the update but another does? could I just make a new account and maybe it would go back to how it was before?

Problems here started about three months ago. First explorer only crashed with a "darth vader" flash in yahoo. After a while more flash caused crashes.
To solve the problem I moved over to firefox. To my suprise, also firefox crashed. Not in the same way,but it crashed.
Getting sick of reloading my browser all the time I moved from win2k to winxp expecting that to solve the problem. Made a clean install but no, still the same crashes.

I am stratign to suspect it is a problem with the hardware I use, a Toshiba tecra 8000. Other machines I use do not have the problem.

don't delete it manually, use add/remove programs to do it

I deal with the Flash crashes by leaving Flash disabled and only using it when absolutely needed—and a simple tool, called Toggle Flash ( http://flash.melameth.com ), does the trick for me.

As far as I can tell, there's no such thing as "melameth" or "flash.melameth" or any other kind of transfabulation thereof.

I'm having the same problem with page crashing with the message "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, the following add-on was running, flash9f.ocx ". I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times. My main problem sites are bbi player and bbc three when trying to view any of their content. I'm running xp pro and ie version 7 with the latest version of flash. Here are 2 specific urls.

This is driving me nuts, at one point I managed to install flash 8 and all worked fine until I was prompted to upgrade and did so. Now I can't fing the link to flash 8.
