i am not a techie, so the previous threads dont help me much -- not basic enough, i guess. anyway, i cant seem to install adobe flash player. i often click on a website or something, and it wont run because it says i need adobe flash player (had it before -- dont know what happened to ti). when i follow the steps to download flash player, my computer freezes up and IE shuts down. whats up, and how might i go forward? and thanks in advance for helping out a non-techie.
Hi gz, Well, it helps to know what operating system you use and what browser(s) and versions. Windows XP, Vista, etc.
IE6, 7 or 8. Firefox or any other browsers?
Also did you Unistall before trying to Install?
Thanks,
eidnolb

Hi, well I hope you took time to eat. The Shockwave that you found, it must say Shockwave Flash Object & Flash...ocx with it. Otherwise you probably have Shockwave Player installed and that is for that.
Now on the HJT(Hi-Jack-This), is it on your Desktop? If it is, it is not a problem.
Ad-Aware SE Personal if it is running would be a problem. Is there an icon in the system tray? I think that is an old version and should be removed. I know you said it won't remove. It is in Add/Remove, right? The way I look at it, if I installed it, I'll remove it:-) If there is an icon in the system tray, right click on it and open it. See if there is a component "Ad-Watch"
Let me know.
thanks,
eidnolb

This is for michellewhaley, I've noticed your posts. May I suggest that you start your own thread. It is too confusing when 2 or 3 people with different systems and issues are on one thread. I realize some forums work like that, but here we prefer everyone have their own.
That way we can just attend to your problems and keep a better thread flow. You can pick out any subject you like for your thread and you'll receive better help.
Thanks,

went start menue, clicked "all programs", went to Ad-Ware, went to its main window, and yes there is an "ad watch" clicked it and got a window that says "realtime protection not available in the personal edition" and "click here for upgrade information" thats as far as i went.
when i go to add/remove programs, it wont let me remove this program.

Well, that should mean that nothing is running in realtime and should not interfere as McAfee would. I think this version of Ad-Aware was an On-Demand, you ran it when you wanted to, it didn't run automatically, is that correct?
Was the HJT just on the Desktop?
When you left click on Ad-Aware what happens? We can remove it, but it isn't causing a problem now so we'll do that later.
Did you have any ad block? What about pop-up blocker software installed?
In your Manage Add ons, the All add ons, can you pull out all ActiveX Controls(list them?) If not don't worry about it.
When you first began having problems, did you try to Install an older version of Flash Player thinking that would work?
Are there any other Anti-Virus/Spyware that you had installed before that wasn't Uninstalled that may still be running in realtime?
I'm trying to determine what caused the ActiveX Control error.
Do you know how to find the Flash folder? If not, I do. Just tell me.
Thanks,
eidnolb
P.S. I just noticed your last post. I'll check on that Wise Uninstall. Someone had that and I forgot what it was for. Will have to find the thread, first I had ever heard of it. Thanks

will try to answer your questions to the best of my ability.
1. best i can tell ad-ware did not run automatically, though i am not 100% positive. i dont think the free version had an auto feature.
2.HJT is not on my desktop. i found an icon for it under my documents. clicked on it and gete a window that says it appears to have been started from a temporary file, and i should move it. anyway, by being in My Documents, is it on the Desktop (as My docs is subordinate to desktop)? i dont know.
3. when i left click on ad-ware, i get what appears to be its home page.
4. ad blocks? i dont know what they are or if i do.
5. the only mention of active x controls is shockwave active x
6. not sure what happened/what i did that started the problem -- i also cant read pdf docs
7. i dont know of any other spyware/anti-virus programs that might be running. between posts, i keep looking around, but its trial and error on my part. not sure how to methodically look.
8. Flash folder? no idea how to find it.

i take it the system tray is the bar at the bottom of my screne with the clock. there is no ad-aware symbol/icon there.
also, when i got to change/remove programs, and click on change remove button, i get a small window titled "WISE UNINSTALL" with text tht says "could not open INSTALL.LOG file
hope some of this helps.

one more thing.....when i attempt to uninstall HJT, i get a window that states "this will remove hijackthis settings from the registry and exit. Note that yhou will have to delete the hijackthis.exe file and any backups manually., Continue to uninstall? yes or no?" so should i continue to uninstall. if so, how do i delete the hijackthis.exe file manually? it doesnt show any backups in the backup window. gz

I wouldn't bother Uninstalling HJT. You may need it in the future or at least for a reference. I have HJT, but just keep it on my Desktop. It is in the Add/Remove, but if I need to run it anytime it is there. It is not anything that is "running" as an
Anti-Virus program or Messenger, etc. Only those would be using Flash while you are Uninstalling Flash Player.
What we want to do is get the Flash Player installed correctly along with the Shockwave Flash Object.
Not sure what time zone you are in, I'm in the U.S. EDT., so I am going to be signing off soon:-)
We'll pick this up tomorrow. I have a couple of links that may be helpful and will get them to you.

Thanks for answering my questions. Yes, we'll pick up tomorrow and take a look at what was Installed today.
If the Flash files are correct, we may just try to Install the ActiveX Control.

Good Morning, well the first thing we are going to do is look at the Flash files. Click on Start, then My Computer. Right Click
on Local Disk(C:), look for and right click on the Windows folder and click on open, look for a large folder System32. Right click on it and click on open, then look for the Macromed folder and right click on it and click on Open. You should now see
a Flash folder. Right click on it and Open. Post back every file that is listed there.
Thanks,
eidnolb

folder was in a folder named windows.

oops. the system 32 folder was in the windows folder. and macromed was
in system 32. and flash was in system 32

Don't confuse me. Ok, so in the Flash folder nothing except install. Do you mean install.log?
If that is true, then not only did the SWO ActiveX Control not install, but no Flash files.
Check again, just to be sure.

eidnolb

Thanks gz, What we are going to do, since you have no Flash files installed, we are going to run the Installer.
I would like for you to just right now, close your browsers and right click on the IE icon on your Desktop and click on Properties. Then click on the Program Tab, look for Manage Add-ons there and click on it. See if you can find your list
of add ons.
I have had your instructions ready to send to you and the forum logged me off, so everything I posted was lost. I did not
receive my email notifications either. If you are still having problems just open a new window. Don't know what is going on, but it is aggravating. Last night, I received messages from the forum that I was not authorized to post on this forum!
Then I had to log back in; that happened several times during the evening. LOL
Try that and let me know if it works.

Ok, that's good. Now I'm going to re-post what I posted over an hour ago and if it logs me off again, I'll send you a private message which still works.
Do you still have the IE Installer on your Desktop? If not go back to the post and put it on there.
1. Disconnect from the Internet
2. Disable McAfee and the Firewall
3. Make sure Internet Zone security is set to Medium
4. Close all browsers, just be looking at your Desktop
5. RUN the Installer from your Desktop and Reboot Once
6. Do not connect to the Internet until I list it in the steps here.
7. Go to your Flash folder as you did before and see if you have 4 files installed
8. Close that out and right click on the IE icon on your Desktop and click on Properties, click on the Program Tab & look for manage add ons. Look for Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control...Flash10e.ocx. Make sure it is there and enabled.
9. Close that out
10. Enable McAfee and the Firewall
11. Now Connect back to the Internet
Post back the files now installed in the Flash folder and the SFO add on above.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Hi gz, when you are logged in, up at the top where it says for example "Welcome eidnolb"(for me) you'll see "New" and then "Your Stuff". Since I sent the PM (private message) the Your Stuff should now be red. click on it and click on "new"
I just got logged off again while posting a message on another thread.
