Do you critically examine requests for downloads, even if they are assoc. w/ the Adobe name?

While trying to view something supposedly sent by my bro in law on Facebook, I was told I must upload the newest version of Adobe Flashplayer.  When I tried to do that, I was infected with a virus that completely disabled my virus protection (inc fireway,) blocked me from the internet and gave me a blank blue screen.  The address was:   mx2.jeelingnet.dk/index.htm.

It is a trojan.  Since I saw the Adobe name, I assumed it was safe.  I was able to fix all problems, just wanted to report my experience.

Hi, sorry that happened to you. It is always best to Uninstall and Install directly from the Adobe sites. First of all the various sites that advise you need to update to the latest Flash Player do not tell you that you need to Uninstall the old

versions first. With Adobe Flash Player, one does not just "download the latest version".

The Uninstall info is here in case you or someone you know needs it:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Also another thing to consider is that although some sites say you need the latest version of Flash Player, they themselves have not updated their websites to support the latest version.

Hope this is helpful for future Adobe Flash Player updates.

I'd add to that "never ever ever" download anything (other than pictures, and even those can contain harmful WMFs) from Facebook unless you are absolutely, 100% sure of who put it there and where it came from.

On my Mac I have a folder full of attached and downloaded Windows viruses. Nearly half of them started out named "installflashplayer.exe". Every one is a trojan.

Unfortunately Adobe can't "babysit" all the jerks who like to put these things up all over the Internet. But people can be a lot more discerning as to what they allow to download, and where the get it.
