I keep getting the above
error. I go to the "Troubleshot
flash Player installation for Windows. This seems to be for a
network, I am not on a network and my XP computer does not even require me to use a log-in it just goes straight to the desktop.
When I do the parameters of my "C" drive I do not see what the help link shows. I have reset the Internet security things to allow Active X and turned off my Antivirus software (Norton) comes with comcast. It was working months ago. I have installed fix-it Utilities 2 month ago. It has been cleaning up my registry. I do not believe it stopped at that point.

Hi, These Instructions are not for a network per se, although they may apply. The Troubleshooting Guide has been revised so I don't know if you have reviewed this one or not. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html
Most of the time if that error is received, then it would indicate a Permission issue. Take a look at this thread I posted to within the last 2 hours and see if that helps you.
When you right click on Start, with XP you should see "Open all Users" and "Explore all Users". When you click on either one or both of those another window opens up and you'll see Menu items. You are not to do anything, just the fact that this window opens and you can see what it contains.
Thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/718816?tstart=0
Let me know the results of the above.

Hi, ok thanks. Now you didn't say what version of browser you are using. IE6, 7 or 8? Also do you use any other browser?
Let me know when you post back. Glad you could check that Permission issue, so ok on that.
Now go to this test site with the IE browser and if you use any other browser do the test with it also.
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
As soon as the site opens, you should see the Red Flash (F) logo animate (move) and the site will also tell you what version of Flash Player you have Installed. I need to know if you can see that logo move and the version number, for each browser.
Thanks,

I have only Internet Explorer 8
.0.6001.18702.
I do not see the "F". I have a lap top that works and I see the "F" and the New York Times ad
It just asks me if I want to install the software. I attempt to install it.
When I run your link This is were I always go. Same Error. This maybe something useful for you to know. I have "Fix-It Utilities 10" anytime I download software it asks to Make a "Check Point" so I can restore back to before the download.
It has this in set-up line " C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILE\CONFLICT.23\FP_AX-CAB-INST.EXE" I just cancel the message and I continue on. If I do not cancel the mesage it just makes a check point to go back to.
If I knew how to attach screen shots I could show the actual message.
Thank you for working with me.

Hi, thanks. The fact that you can't see the animation on the Adobe test site tells me that you may not have the Shockwave Flash Object Installed. Go to Tools, Manage add ons and it should open into Toolbars & Extensions. Look down to the middle of that page (left of center) for "Show"(very light text). There are 4 categories you can open. Under the "All add ons" you will find Shockwave Flash Object and it must be Enabled and it will show the version number. Also Under "Run without Permission" it will also be listed.
Let me know what you find there.
Regarding the New York Times ad, what are they asking you to do? Download or Install Flash Player? or Update it? Don't bother doing that on any site but a secure Adobe site if you even need to.
On "Fix it Utilities 10", I am not familiar with, unless you are speaking of the Microsoft Program "Fix-it-Tool" It does not sound like the same thing. I'll check it out. I suppose that program is running in your Task Manager? Where did you get this from?
I don't need a screen shot, I'll find what I need to know and let you know.
What Anti-Virus do you have Installed?
Thanks,

Hi, Since McAfee was on your computer and most likely still has files there, unless you used the McAfee Removal Tool to Uninstall. Let me know if you used that.
Second, Norton can block the Install of the ActiveX Control and probably did.
Third, that Fix-it-Utilities 10, would not be something I would have on my computer. I did a search on it last night before the Forum went down for maintenance and did not come away with a good opinion of it. Read several reviews from other userss that have it.
Don't bother trying to Install Flash Player until we can clear up the above issues, as I'm sure it would just fail again.
Let me know on the McAfee Tool above.

Hi, Why do you think McAfee, Norton and most other Anti-Virus programs have Removal Tools, if removing these programs are as easy as just removing them from Add/Remove?
How many components do you think Norton has on your system?
The point I'm trying to make is that if you are the Administrator and still can't Install the Shockwave Flash Object, which is an ActiveX Control, then something is preventing it.
Regarding this Fix-it-Utilities program, from what I have read is that it "cleans" the Registry. Do you know what it actually does to the Registry? Do you think it may have removed files that are no longer "needed" and perhaps these files are what Flash Player needs to Install to? Flash Player Installs into the Windows Registry, actually these that follow:
The Flash Player installer uses the following Windows system registry entries:

Hopefully you have all of those files. I have no way of knowing. I also don't know what any Registry Cleaning Program does, what do they mean they "clean" the Registry?
What I am trying to suggest is that there must be some reason that you can't Install the Shockwave Flash Object and in my opinion McAfee, Norton and Fix-it-Utilities 10 are prime suspects.
Perhaps you may want to search the Internet for all three and see if anyone else is having a problem with any of them. I know McAfee and Norton have a Forum. I don't know about the Fix it. I would contact them though and ask if they have "cleaned" any of those Windows Registry entries. At least you would know you still have them there, since they are needed to Install Flash Player successfully.
Let me know what you find out.
Thanks,
eidnolb

The clean-up has deleted 100's of items.
I can check if any of the items are missing.
I did restore it all and it did not change anything.
I do agree that there is something missing somewhere in the computer.

Hi, My concern with that fix-it program is what effect does it have on System Restore should ever need to use that. The Registry is so very important that someone told me long ago to leave it alone and I took that advice.
This would be my suggestion to you. Use the McAfee Removal Tool according to the instructions that I give you. Then when you receive the message that it has been successful and we know there are no more McAfee files on your system, we will Uninstall & Install again. However you have pre-Install steps to take first. Then we will disable the Norton components that I know blocks the Install of that ActiveX Control. McAfee & Norton probably Install their components into 12-15 files in your system that you don't even know about:-) If these are not taken care of they conflicts occur.
So, let me know what you want to do. I can give you the Removal Tool info tonight, but the instructions for the Uninstall/Install will be tomorrow.

You can give me the instructions when you have time. I would expect I need to download the uninstaller from the McAfee site.
I can go thru the registery items to see if I have them still tonight. Most likely has to do with the Fix-it since I would think I had the flash player in the 6 months. My computer came with the XP installed so I do not have the XP disk.

Hi, Following are the Instructions for using the McAfee Removal Tool:
McAfee Removal Tool and Instructions
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507&lc=1033&pf=1
Follow Steps 1 & 2 only, Close all browsers before Running the Tool. Allow it to completely finish.
When you receive the CleanUp Successful, then be sure to Reboot(restart) your computer.
While this is running, do not attempt to use your computer or touch any keys.
Also before running this, disconnect Norton Anti-Virus and Firewall so there will be no interference. If there is a way to Disable the Fix-it, then I would do that also.
When I spoke of Uninstalling and Installing, I was referring to Flash Player, but I will give you the instructions for that, since certain things need to be in place before you do that.
Thanks,

Hi, It would be nice to know from Fix-it what they remove so when you use the Restore function you would know what is being Restored. I know using Windows System Restore, you have to be aware of that, you may bring back what you don't want!!
Well, we'll try to work around that. Did you run the McAfee Removal Tool and did you get the Successful Message?
Thanks,

I did the uninstall and it failed. I spent
1 hour with McAfee chat with a Tech.
I gave him control of my computer and He ran the software and I same message. "Incomplete Clean-Up". I looked at the Log and it said "Internal error" without any other details. He said he fixed it but it still says "Incomplete Clean-up" still.
I went back to my oldest check point (Late July) and ran the software again same result. I was hoping that if he corrected the McAfee issue ir would fix the Adobe issue.

Hi, well that is disappointing that he couldn't fix that and get the Removal Tool to run. So you used the Removal tool and he did also and the message "Incomplete Clean up" came up, but no info except Internal error.
One thing you learned is that you still have old McAfee files on your system, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten the message of "Incomplete Clean up".
I know you are trying to fix your problem, but there are too many "cooks" in the kitchen if you know what I mean.
Fix-it, the McAfee Tech and you. Too many people going in different directions isn't helping. If the issues could have been fixed, you wouldn't have come to the Adobe Flash Forum. I don't mean to offend you in any way, just trying to get you to see that I am trying to help you. If I thot McAfee could have helped you I would have sent you there, but I know better.
If I thot Fix-it could have solved your problem I would have sent you there. And last but not least if I thot Norton could help you, I'd send you there, but I don't, so I won't. And I'm not saying I'm the only one that can help you, but I know none of those 3 can. These three programs on your computer is the PROBLEM! These three programs are conflicting on your system. Norton most likely stopped the Removal Tool from working in my opinion. I spend more time here on the Flash Forum with Anti-Virus programs either blocking the Install of Flash Player or preventing it from working, so I do know some things about these programs.
If you don't want to follow my advice then that is fine, but surely you realize that I can't be of any help to you. I think you need to decide if you want to continue to try to fix your problem on your own or whether you want may help. If you want my help then you will have to follow my advice. I do hope you understand.
Thanks,
eidnolb

I believe I am following your direction. I would
expect that you would want me to take some responsibility and not just say the McAfee uninstall did not work. I would expect you would want me to ask McAfee why the uninstall did not work and see if they could correct that issue. The only thing he did was rerun the uninstaller.
You asked me to see if there was any history with Fix-it that prevented Adobe from installing. They just suggested I restore to the earlier state.
I turned the Norton off as you suggested.
I have restored my system the best I can by using the first check point from July.
I have checked my permissions as you directed.
What should I do next?

Hi, I appreciate your reply. We just have a different way of trying to solve the issues, that is all. Since McAfee still on your system and Norton is conflicting with it and Fix-it is, in my opinion not helping. When it comes to Anti-Virus programs, you always start removing the oldest one first and cleanly before Installing a new program. So since the Removal Tool for McAfee wasn't used, no fault of yours (many users don't know that) then we start with that. But we have to make sure that Norton doesn't try to block that McAfee Tool and Fix-it doesn't interfere with constantly setting a "point" that is not needed for the purpose of Removing McAfee. The fact that you must download the McAfee Removal Tool I would think Fix-It would then set a restore point.
Yes you have done mostly what I have asked, it's just that you did some "extras" and told me after instead of before:-)
What I want to do is have you to first Download and SAVE to your Desktop the McAfee Removal Tool.
Then Disconnect from the Internet, but print out the instructions for using the Tool first.
Now, in order to make sure Norton is disabled, I'm going to give you some components to check on to see if you have these. Go to Tools, Manage add ons and Disable -Norton Toolbar
-Symantec NCO BHO
-Symantec Intrusion Prevention
Next to the following:
Right Click and Open Norton. Turn off Smart Firewall and Auto Protect
Under Miscellaneous Settings, Disable Norton Product Tamper Protection
Disable the Anti-Virus
Disable Fix-it if you can, if not Disable it if you can.
After you have done that, then CLOSE all browsers. Then RUN the McAfee Removal Tool, don't touch your computer until it is finished. If you receive a Successful message, then Reboot your computer.
If you do not, then right click on the Norton icon and Enable the Anti-Virus and Smart Firewall only. Connect back to the Internet and then follow the instructions from McAfee about the log file, etc.
That log will have information that the Technical Support at McAfee needs in order to help you further.
If you have any questions about the above, let me know.
Thanks,
eidnolb
