Flash 10 hangs Internet Explorer 7 on Vista?

I installed Flash 10 on my dad's computer last Saturday. He emailed me today to tell me that Internet Explorer 7 had been a few times over the past few days which he things started around Tuesday. Since the only change to IE7 made recently was upgrading from Flash 9 to Flash 10, Flash 10 is my suspect.

Are there any reports of Flash 10 causing IE7 to hang in Vista?

I had the same problem you were talking about. I got a message from my PC that said that IE was being restarted because it was bogged down when I only had CNN open was because of flashplayer and to uninstall flashplayer and reinstall it and maybe it would solve the problem. My problem is that now when I try to download flashplayer it says my platform is not supported. Does anyone have any clues as to how to help me? Sorry, I didn't know who else to ask, and as this was how my problem started I thought you guys might know. It's a brand new laptop, so I don't know what the problwm is. Thanks for listening.

Try this: How to uninstall Flash Player
It's strange it gives you that error anyway if you installed/uninstalled it correctly.

So is Adobe on this or what?? It happens a lot on one of our Vista 32 machines in IE7 only. Browsing Yahoo/Yahoo News will do it. I've got a crash dump of it (first page loaded, no less) and appears to be a Flash deadlock (in the debugger w/MS symbols loaded). I'd be happy to send it to someone at Adobe if they're interested. This thread has been opened a while though, so I'm assuming Adobe doesn't think it's a big deal? I know someone else who has this problem as well and keep waiting for a resolution to come via this thread but ...

Debug versions usually save a lot of logs and/or output some datas on the serial port though.
I prefer a downgrade, thanks for the info...

    Really CNN forces FP10?
In the meanwhile I downgraded to FP9 as I said above: actually multiple playing FLVs and flash anims run smoother with much less CPU consuming as far as I can see.... I'll wait for next v10 fix...

Hi Everyone... I've been monitoring this particular Forum Thread for about... 3 months now... and I've found a solution that worked for me

I've experienced the problem myself, although I'm not using Vista, nor IE 7.... I'm in XP-Pro sp3, using IE 6.0.290.2180. I'm in an office environment, which will not allow us to migrate to Vista (not that we want to, lol) or IE 7. Initially we all get Flash 9 installed by default, but a soon a Flash 10 came out, I upgraded my Office PC to it. I must also comment that this problem has NOT happened in my Home PC with XP-pro sp3 & IE7, Flash10 works fine there.

Since October, my IE 6.0 has been experiencing constant, and random Hangs when visiting sites with Flash content. Initially, the first two or three pages that I visit work fine, but once I open a new Window, or browse to a different page, my PC starts dragging itself and becomes non-responsive... the only thing that sort-of responds is the IE windows that initiated the 'Freeze'. I have not found a way to replicate this (I'm sorry Adobe guys, we won't do the job for you... just know that it happens and its irritating... fix it please) because there's simply no unique webpage, or action that clearly causes this. As soon as this happens, I just wait until IE crashes and everything return back to normal. Once I un-install or disable Flash as an Add-on, the problem disappears.

I've been working for months now without Flash, without any problems. Any time I see a possible solution in this thread, I try it, but Flash still freezes my PC..... until yesterday, when I tried something different: I installed the DEBUG version of Flash player 10.... that's it… that's all I did, and my IE has not crashed any more, and Flash content ins working fine....

I ran "flashplayer10r12_36_winax_debug.exe" which I downloaded from here:
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/updaters/10/flashplayer_10_ax_debug.exe

I hope this works for people other than me, while Adobe 'works' on a solution (or, in acknowledging the problem first..)

    @Gary
But all these problems were not present in Flash9? Honestly I didn't mind this before...
I'm considering a downgrade since I've found on FileHippo an olter Flash 9.0.124.0 version: http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/4007/

    Hi Hexaae-
Oh yeah... there were problems....you just don't remember. That's why so many old threads are being rehashed.
However, FP9's problems were a breeze compared to 10's. Most of the FP9's you see now were/are pre-installed on computers and work very well, until folks go with another browser and have to upgrade. I installed/tried Firefox for the first time yesterday, ran it without FP(fast!) and with (slower). The site (CNN) insisted on the latest (FP10). Vids played faster than they loaded (like IE) so they were jerky. I did the old "Rt click" thing and they settled out. All the flying-around ads are really annoying, though.
I had to do a search for "thetechangel.com" thread (archived), it's now on page 1. Check the start date on this thread- this problem has been going on for a while!

    Hi Hexaae-
Hopefully he's busy working on the solution!
Lanesharon is partly correct, but his method doesn't work for everyone. I tested a variant of this some time ago and had good success with it. In his case, it's not that multiple versions get loaded, but that the timing is messed up. FP10 seems to require more download speed than we normal humans can provide. I took my laptop to various places from dial-up to Business Comcast, trying both corded and wireless. The faster, the better. Add to that is the webbers killing us all with flash-ads. Yesterday I updated an old computer from FP6 to FP10 and it was a LOT busier. I almost wanted to go back to 6!
One thing that does help is to pause/stop the video prior to leaving the site, or your next page may hang.
For some it's been a permissions issue, for some an installation issue.
For now, for IE, there's two methods that have worked for many. The old "Rt click on the Util folder, follow the Wizard" method, and the newer method provided by "thetechangel.com" (I forgot the exact title)in this forum. I'll bump it toward the front of the forum. Do some searching and tryin' stuff, or wait for the Adobe fix.

Tried and experiment today. You can read about it on the forums here:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=44&catid=184&threadid=1419621

It is definitely Flash and I have proven it, beyond a shadow of a doubt. So WHY are they not doing something about it?

I have been freezing (locking up) also. I have IE7, Adobe flashutil10a, and Vista Home. I finally am realizing why this is happening.

If a website has mutliple flash items on it, Adobe loads multiple versions of flashutil10a. Since many of the new website developers have gone flash crazy, throwing images and ads at us, this can add up quickly.

If you are like I am and running lean (Athlon 1145 MHZ, 1G memory), then you will freeze. At least, that is my suggestion for why this is happening.

No this problem has been reproduced on all kinds of PCs. For me I have a 4GB ram, Core 2 Duo 2GHz... moreover, if it was a "too much flash" problem would be always reproduceable on the same web page. If you reload the page where you've been stuck before, you won't again. It happens randomly....

    Hi
I am pretty computer illiterate and have been frustrated for about a month over this issue. I have vista and internet 7. When I opened more than one window the page would freeze and say not responding. It eventually got to the point where it would just freeze and I would have to do the control alt delete. I spent the last month searching the forums and help and support for windows. I have spy sweeper and norton on my computer. I even did some of the recommended steps to ensure no spyware and ran one of the programs windows has on its website just to double check. I finally decided it was the flash.. Since I always do the updates I'm assuming it is the latest flash. i had uninstalled and installed it again. When I uninstalled it i found out the problem didnt happen or not as much (I think).

Last week I finally figure out how to use internet tools under add ons to disable flash when i use other programs. And enable it when i need to see stuff that needs flash.

I'm hoping the is the problem with my computer. I see a patch should be released soon. Is there any thing else i should check or do? You need to be specfic with your instructions as computer lingo hurts my head.

I just built a new system with Vista 64 bit w/IE7 have also been experiencing problems with the Flash player - almost every page I go to the Flash player installation box pops up asking to install Flash. I say yes and it appears to install, but it really doesn't, but it goes away and waits till I go to the next web page with Flash and annoys me all over again, with the same results. What a nuisance ! I came to this forum looking for solutions and found I am not alone. I too am anxious for the updated Flash player which hopefully resolves this problem.

I am having serious difficulties with Adobe Flash Player 10. In December of '08, I upgraded from FP 9 and ever since I have been hanging and occasionally even crashing in IE 7. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium SP 1, 32bit OS. It took a while to determine that it was FP 10, but I came to the realization that it was, as these problems didn't start occuring until I downloaded FP 10 - and that the hangs and crashes only occur with add-ons enabled and with only three add-ons running in my "manage add-ons" tab.

I have used Adobe's uninstaller - following directions perfectly - uninstalled, reinstalled repeatedly. Yet, I am still having the issues with IE hanging and sometimes crashing. I notice it happens most frequently when I open another tab and load another page, or when I navigate away from another page, or when I try to close an existing tab. The page turns an opaque white and a box will come up and tell me that "Internet Explorer Is Not Responding". It will then give me the option of closing the program or restarting the program. Occasionally I even have to use Task Manager to close windows (often losing work in the process).

Unfortunately, I can't replicate the problem with any certainty. It happens on and off, without warning. But, usually on pages that are loaded with Flash images.

Is there a patch for this any time soon? I use many websites that require a Flash player -- and this is just irritating and enormously frustrating. This is happening up to five or six times daily now. I'm very disgruntled at this point and have invested far too much time in initially figuring out what was causing this. When will it be fixed?

Just think... for every single posting here, there are probably 10,000 other users of Adobe Flash Player 10 who either don't know why their Internet Explorer keeps crashing or don't know there is a forum here to vent their frustrations. It's truly sad that this has been a problem since mid-October and Adobe seems to act like they could care less about fixing it. Perhaps we need to start a worldwide movement encouraging web site developers to abandon Flash in favor of Microsoft Silverlight.
