Hi,
I am having problems with the latest Update of Adobe Flash Player to release 11. I am on a Mac(10.6.8) running the 64bit kernel. At the moment I installed Flash Player 11, every Website with Flashcontent is crashing. This also happens in Chrome, not only Safari or Firefox. I did everything Adobe provides as possible solutions. Do an uninstall with the uninstaller, then install fresh. I had a look in both of the Internet Plugins folder to make sure everything got removed correctly. But the new install won't work.
What works is uninstalling Flash Player 11 and installing Flash Player 10.3 again. Everything works like a charm then. Well... except in Chrome of course.
Just as a last bit of information: I never had any beta or alpha versions of the player installed.
Can anyone please help me? Does anyone else encounter this problem?
Regards
Alex
Many thanks, Alex, for providing the fonts to me. I am not on the Flash team, but am in Type Development, thus my interest in fonts, and my experience that "unknown" fonts may be malformed. I am using a MacBook Pro 17-inch running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I installed the fonts into my ~/Library/Fonts folder, and Flash now crashes on a regular basis. Attached is a screenshot of what I am experiencing in Chrome. So, if you simply remove the KozGo*.ttf files (use "% rm ~/Library/Fonts/KozGo*.ttf" to remove

I have the same problem with Mac OS X (10.7.1) , it constantly crashes on every website with Flash content in any browser I tried. Adobe, any comments??
P.S. Downgrade to 10.3 helps.

Hi,
thanks for the replies. The following are my hardware specs. One can not be sure that it might be a damaged hardware but it is very unlikely as i got my motherboard and graphicscard exchanged only 3 month ago. I also can play gpu accelerated games...
Thanks

Hi,
I also did a test in my Windows XP Virtual Machine(installed the Flash Player 11) running on the very same MacBook Pro. No problems there so I think my hardware is ok.
- It is not 64 bit obviously, if that makes any difference -

Hi guys,
this has been dealt with specifically on several posts on teh web, including the officil spec list on the features page of the flash 11 update (known issues).
Flash player is not working with some macs due to driver issues, hence it will work with windows on the mac.
Adobe has flagged it to Apple and request they prioritise a fix for it hwoever Apple has said it is a low priority and wont be addressed - they ar once again doing everything they can NOT to help.

Hi,
well the kind of macbook pro i have is one of the most standardized hardwares out there. There have to be a lot of others experiencing the same problem and somehow I can not imagine that Adobe is publishing a player which is not running on any macbook pro out there. It is not an exotic setup at all.
Can you please provide a link to these known issues? I had a look but did not find them.

Hi,
I found that other forumpost. Seems to be exactly the same problem with the same hardware specs. http://forums.adobe.com/message/3960079#3960079

Hi,
thanks for the "Known Issues". I thought you had another list in mind, because this is what I found aswell. Unfortunately this discribes something different. I have a NVidia GPU and I would not care that much if hardware acceleration was buggy. But all Flashcontent is crashing. Even the simplest Frame by Frame Animation and also any content targeting Player 10 that is not relying on any GPU at all.
So I think the crashes is another issue as the list describes possible situations where you have not full access to hardware acceleartion which should not crash the Player.
Thanks
Alex

Sorry, that is just the adobe one.
I have read lots of these in my travels over the past couple of days - ALL of which are relating to MAC and the drivers for the GPU cards.
I can not see any reason at all why the flash player would crash on your system between the two players other than GPU issues. Especially since it is the primary variation is known
to be the cause.
I would suggest installing a virtual machine - windows etc, as this has been shown to work, if it is indeed successful then you know you need to speak to Apple about keeping up to date with their drivers.

Yeah, you are probably right. I just thought that there was a statement i have overread saying, crashes on blablabla... Maybe I was to optimistic about my mbp/specs not being explicitly in the list..
Thanks a lot for following these posts...

alex_ from the Mozilla crash-stat link you provided, we think the issue is in the area of font loading. can you let use know what system language you have on and a list of fonts you have on your system? our dev is looking at it more closely, but it would be great if we could reproduce the issue.

Hi,
is there any progress already? I got an call from a customer this morning who is experiencing the same problems. Sometimes it is only Audio not working, sometimes the Player is crashing completely. What happened during the call is that he he is overthinking his decission to use flash. I mean, that decission might cost me several thousands of € the next year and I can only say to him: "Well, i am sorry but it is not my fault!".
And I think it will get worse. People are just starting to update their Flash Players. Maybe Adobe should think about removing Player 11 from the download page until the problems are solved.
I also have several friends, mainly Chrome Users, wanting to use the Web Audio API of the latest Chrome Release, also experiencing the same probelms, who deactivated the Flash Plugin in favour of the API. Downgrading is not an option for them.
Please take this very seriously as there are a lot of people experiencing this problem. People I know but who are not commiting bugreports inside their browsers and who simply don't care whether they can use flash or not. What they care about are nasty crash messages...
I am now quite sure that it has nothing to do with an extraordinary hardware or software setup. It might be the font thing, but hey, Flash Player should be able to handle that.
Regards
Alex

Alex,
Just to let you know that Adobe Flash engineering team have been trying to reproduce your crash very hard, more than five people tried for several days since you reported, but no luck to see the crash even once. It's very hard to investigate yoru issue if we can not reproduce internally. Any hints for us to reproduce your crash is highly appreicated. (we've already read all your info in this thread)
By the way all crash isn't necessary same and it need to be distinguished by data in crash log. Other people's crash can be completely different from yours and caused by different reason. We want to track your issue in this thread.
thanks,
Hitomi

Hi Hitomi,
I am absolutely sure that you do your best. And I really appreciate you people at Adobe investigating that issue.
It is just so strange that it is not reproduceable for you. Just 15 minutes before I went home from work a coworker of mine asked me, why Flash crashes in his Chrome Browser. And he did an update of Chrome just the other day. He has exactly the same MBP as I have. Just bought it something like 3 or 4 month after me. Except he has 10.7 installed.
Last week it looked like my MBP is having a strange issue with the FP11. I did an update just right after you released the player. Then others dropped in and had the same - or as you state - similar issues. And now people are updating and some of the people I work with (in totally different parts of the indusrty) are also experiencing crashes. For some it is really only Audio which is failing. Others experience these complete crashes as I do. And there are a lot of other actionscriptdevelopers who have no problem at all.
You have to understand that I am just a little pissed that I can not play around with all the cool stuff Adobe was announcing the last year as an official release. I have no problem with uninstalling and going back to 10.3 except the fact that I will gain experience with the new APIs a little later than others do.
But from the moment the iPad came out it is often hard for me to convince people that flash is not so bad after all. And these issues are somehow adding fuel to the fire. And some of them experiencing these crashes are totally lost with uninstalling the Flash Player and reinstalling the latest release. They even do not know where to download older releases. So no Youtube because Flash is installed and no fallback seems to be neccessary. And now they blame Flash as an technology. These are mainly people using their computers for buying stuff at Amazon or using Powerpoint.
When I wrote that Adobe should consider removing the FP11 from the download page I was just asking myself if all the psychological sideeffects of these crashes are worth having FP11 released right at MAX. I did not want to blame anyone for any bugs but I guess the ratio of people commiting bugreports to those not is something like 1 to VERYVERYMANY.
Thanks for taking care...

Alex,
Thank you for sharing your thought. I appreciate your time and effort to report the crash and your help to investigate our product isuse. Honestly speaking there are many differnt type of Flash Player crash exist. We know that as fact from browser vendor's crash report. We know customers are suffering from the crash issues. However almost all crashers are not reproducible for us even we try hard. We really need customer's (like your) help to track down those issues one by one. My mission in Flash Runtime engineering team is to engage with customers (again like you) through multiple channeles inlcuding this forum.
If you see people who encounter Flash Player crash, please ask them to report us with their crash log so we can at least tell what kind of crash it is from crash signture. Then we can try figure out how to reproduce. Unless we see crash log we can't tell one crash is same or different with another one.
Thank you for all your help!

Hi Ken, Hi Hitomi,
thank you so much. That actually solved my problem. No crashes in any browser anymore.
I first removed Adobes font cache file and then got rid of the font you were stating as faulty.
I know at least one person also experiencing this crashes and also freelancing. So he might have some crippled fonts in his users font library as well. I will spread the word...
Thank you...

Alex,
Thank you for confirming that removing these 12 TTFs solved the problem. If you copy only one of these 12 TTFs back into your ~/Library/Fonts/ directory, you will start to experience this issue again. In other words, this specific issue has nothing to do with the Adobe font cache files.
I just inspected these fonts, and the problem is in their 'name' tables, specifically that they are missing crucial strings, specifically name.IDs 1 (Font Family name) and 4 (Full Family name). These fonts include only name.IDs 2 (Font Subfamily name), 3 (Unique font identifier), 5 (Version string), and 6 (Postscript name for the font). In fact, if you use the Mac OS X "Font Book" application to validate these fonts, it will state that the 'name' table is problematic, and that the fonts should not be used.
Please keep us posted about other customers you know who are experiencing this issue. One way to identify potentially problematic fonts is to use the Mac OS X "Font Book" application.

Hi Ken,
my coworking pal definately also had font issues as he removed some very old .ttf files(the only ones he had in his users font folder) with architectural symbols inside and no further crashes at all. I am very glad that this worked out.
I have actually no idea what you are talking about 😉 But that is ok I think. I checked my other fonts and they seem to be ok. What frightens me a bit is the fact, that there are probably a lot of broken fonts out there. People installed them years ago and just copied their system backups without cleaning unused stuff. So I am really not surprised after all.
What do you think? Is it possible to somehow identify those broken fonts on Flash Player startup so that they do not get loaded or whatsoever flash player is doing with them?

Alex,
While I certainly cannot speak for the Flash Runtime team, because I am on the Type Development team, it seems that a prudent measure would be to check for, and guard against, malformed fonts.
On the customer side, there is some measure of responsibility to not use such fonts, and leveraging proven tools, such as the Mac OS X "Font Book" application, specifically its function for checking the integrity of installed fonts, would be something I would strongly suggest.
