Flash player could not be registered.

I see I have the same problem as many others in that the flash player 10.1 update could not register. I have XP sp3 with all the latest updates, IE8, AVG free 9, Spybot S&D, I use the windows firewall. After the first failed install I uninstalled AVG and Spybot and turned off the firewall, set all IE options to what troubleshooting said to. Ran ccleaner and set it so nothing would load at start up and did a restart. I still get the same error "could not be registered". Just for S&G I uninstalled all other adobe items and tried again, no good. I reinstalled all other adobe items with no problem and they all seem to be working fine except for the flash player. Any help would be great Thank you Chris

Thanks Chris for starting your thread. Sorry for the delay, just a lot of threads. I don't know if you have a 64bit system or 32. I think the first thing is to see what of Flash Player is Installed or not. Go go C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash.
Open the Flash folder and post back all files listed there. Any NPSWF file or files need a right click and then click Properties to obtain the version numbers.
For the 64bit, it is C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash Do the same thing.
Using IE go to Tools, manage Add ons and search All add ons for Shockwave Flash Object..ActiveX Control..Flash10h.ocx
and make sure it's Enabled. If it does not say Flash10h.ocx what does it say?
Using FF(Firefox) find the SWF 10.1.53.64 plug-in and it needs to be Enabled. Now that SWF may not be there with that version, but I need to know if any SWF is listed.
Without going back to the other thread, I can't remember if you have Installed Flash Player successfully in IE or FF or neither one. Let me know on that.
Thanks,
eidnolb

This is a problem for 1000's or 10's of thousands of people. I have worked through every suggestion on this board for the past week or so. Either Microsoft needs to patch or adobe needs to rework this product. You can't have people messing with registry editing to get the Flash to work.

Hi JBW99, I'm sure no one knows the problems that users are having better than those of us here trying to help and find solutions. The problem is that it is not just one issue and on top of that most everyone's system is configured differently.
Regarding the Registry, I was told several years ago to leave it alone and not only do not recommend any Registry tampering, I discourage it. I don't go there and have never suggested anyone else to do so. I don't experiment with my system and don't experiment with anyone else's.
The error of "not be registered" can mean more than one thing. It usually means that the user did not have permission to install the ActiveX Control (for IE) and write to the Windows Registry, both of which is Microsoft's Technology and their requirements to protect the system. Sometimes it means the ActiveX Control couldn't be Installed for another reason, a block by Anti-Virus/Firewall programs, Security settings to not allow the Install of the ActiveX Control even with user permission.
If you still haven't found a solution it would be better to start a thread. If you have one, just stay with it. As you can tell by the forum, it is very busy. We have many more threads than helpers.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Thanks Chris, I noted your other post and yes I can see by your Flash folder content that Flash Player is not Installed in either browser. I also see the reason. It's that get_atlcom Class add on in IE. This is one thing that Adobe needs to get rid of. Everytime it is used it causes issues. The other add on Shockwave ActiveX Control is for Shockwave Player which you'll find in Add/Remove, which is where you'll be going:-)
Go to Add/Remove and look for any listing of a DLM(download manager) and or getplus. Remove one or both. Then Reboot(restart) your computer.
Then go back to your IE add ons and see if that get_atlcom Class was removed. If it is not, then Using IE, go to Tools, click on Internet Options, then under the General Tab, click on Settings and then View Objects. If that is listed there, right click and see if you have the option to Remove/Delete. If you do, do so.
Go back to your Flash folder where you found your Flash files, and right click on Getflash.man (not sure of that .man)?
but Remove/Delete it.
Thanks,
eidnolb

tried download again still no good
what next?

Hi, LOL, well you could have stopped to collect the $200:-) Ok, now, did you Reboot after Removing the DLM? And were you able to remove that Getflash.MAN file? I have never heard of that file. I have just finished searching Google and Bing and Adobe and found one entry which had no responses. So I don't know what it is. Can you right click on it and then click on Properties and see if you can get any more info? I think it may be a Flash Manager aka DLM under their former name.
Thanks,

Woohoo! Hey Chris, good job! All of your Flash files for IE are correct. Now find that Shockwave Flash Object and make sure it says Flash10h.ocx and Enabled and if so you are in business.
Then test youtube and a couple of sites with videos and see how they are playing.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Still no good. Went to youtube picked a video and it said I needed adobe flash player. Tried to download, said NO to download DLM went to help and support page and tried to get .exe version to download but it was the same as before would not register after the download. Flash folder is the same as last post it did not change. No DLM listed on add/remove list and no get_atlcom under manage add-ons. Will be headed to bed soon any other ideas you have I will try tomorrow after work. Thank you once again for all you help Chris

Hi Chris, hate to wake you but, just confirm you mean Shockwave Flash OBJECT (just in caps to make a point) not Shockwave ActiveX Control, but this:
Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control..Flash10h.ocx If that is not listed, then we have a problem.
Shockwave Flash Object..ActiveX Control...Flash10h.ocx is for Flash Player vs 10.1.53.64
Shockwave ActiveX Control is for Shockwave Player vs 11.5.2 (most likely)
Two different programs.
If it is not the Shockwave...Object, don't worry we can take care of it:-)
Oh, the only thing that matters with any add on in any browser is not where it is or in what category but Enabled or Disabled:-)
Thanks,
eidnolb

Hi Chris, just checking in. Did you get the same result that JBW99 did? If so, then it is a permission problem. Here is what I posted on JBW99's thread from Microosoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827659
This thread expands on it: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/673215?tstart=0
I don't know if this is your problem or not, but thot it was worth letting you know about it. If you passed that test that Pat posted to you, then we'll proceed.
Let me know.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Can I chime in here for a bit? The "unable to register" error is a bit tricky, as it has to do with registry permissions. I would like you to do a little test, so we may know a little bit more why and what cannot be registered.
Assming that your Macromed\Flash folder is at C:\Windows\system32 ...
Open a Command Prompt window (Start | Run | type cmd
), then enter the following series of commands
cd \
cd windows\system32\macromed\flash
regsvr32 flash10h.ocx
exit
What error message do you get when issuing the regsvr32 command?
