Flash Player showing porn picture

I'm running Flash Player 10,3,181,14 on an up-to-date 32-bit WIndows XP. When playing YouTube videos, the sound is fine but a malicious site appears to have dumped malware so that with most videos the image shown in the player is a distorted version of the same static porn image. The results are the same in both FireFox and Opera browsers.

I've run online anti-virus scans using ESET Smart Security, Trend Housecall and BitDefender.

I've also uninstalled and resinstalled Flash Player.

Is this a trojan, an exploit, a redirect, or what?

It sounds you are OK. However, in the future, I suggest trying to scan the computer with the free SpyBot Search & Destroy. This program finds all trojans/spyware, and may fix problems like this.

Hi - I do use Spybot as well as ESET - I never got around to using Kaspersky - their Online Scanner is unavailable at the moment. The last one I ran was "SUPERAntiSpyware Online Scan", but all that found was tracking cookies. The broad procedure was simply

deleted browser cookies and clear cache

Blocked sites from storing data in Flash and deleted all old data

uninstalled Flash

Deleted all Flash directories

Restarted the PC

Resinstalled flash plugins

And now I actually get to see the videos...

TDSSKiller http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 is designed just for rootkits like the ones that redirect your browser or Flash Player to unwanted sites. I had a nasty bout with a TDSS rootkit three weeks ago when Microsoft Security Essentials installed in a Win update and disabled my AVG. It statred with redirects from google searches, then took my processor to 100% whenever ANY browser was open, Then it took out my keyboard and turned every shortcut into an IE link.

Bottom line, it may seem pretty harmless when it starts, but it will progress, like worms do and soon, it'll start screwing up your whole PC.

It's the same at Bing - although (interestingly) the advert plays fine for a few seconds, and the overlay image only appears when the site switches to the main Reuters video.

I've got no toolbars installed at all...

I'm not sure browsers are scanned or not with any AV. I've never heard of what you are experiencing without a Virus or Malware infection.

You didn't mention what version of IE you are using, but I would look at all of the addons/bho's/helpers & activeX Controls and then Disable all except Shockwave Flash Object. Then see what happens with a video.

If you don't have that happen, then one of the addons etc may be the issue. Then you could also check the plugins/extensions/addons in FF & Opera. Except with those browsers, keep the Shockwave Flash enabled & perhaps a plugin that is necessary from FF only. I don't use FF so am not sure what is essential from them.

I seldom use IE - version 8 is installed - trying that, it appears that Flash is not installed in IE at all at the moment...

Hi, Did this come from a youtube video or from another website if you know? If it's just a particular youtube video, then report it to youtube. If you don't know, then what I would suggest is when running either your Installed Anti-Virus, to close all browser windows first. If the ESET/TrendMicro or BitDefender scans are online scans and not Installed in your system, then be sure to only run one at a time with all browser windows closed and your Installed Anti-Virus Disabled. Otherwise you'll have interference.

What Anti-Virus/Spyware programs do you have Installed?

All videos from YouTube and other sites (film trailers etc.) seem to be affected - the video downloads and plays, but the image displayed is replaced (overlaid?) with the porn image.

I have ESET smart security installed and have tried separate online scans from Trend Micro and BitDefender - they all claim no infection. I can't find any trace of an issues except with Flash videos...

Within Flash Player, I've also blocked all sites from storing data and deleted all previous data. No impact at all...

Try www.bing.com On the left side bar they have Videos. Just hover the mouse over Videos and then select which you want to watch. See if that happens on any of those videos.

Do you use any Toolbars? It may be a browser issue since it's effecting all browsers.
