Oops, flash player is missing or not up to date error

Explorer ,
Apr 06, 2011 Apr 06, 2011

I have two computer which receive the message "oops, flash player is missing or not up to date". I uninstalled and reinstalled the flash player multiple times. I have tried several different links and still it does not work. Does anyone know why I still get this error message when I visit websites? After the download of flash player, the flash player appears to be working according to the adobe.com website. If says, if you can see this, then your flash player is working, but when I go to some site such as a radio station website and try to stream their station, I get the above error message. I go to other site that need flash player to play videos and I get the same error.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am running XP Pro on one machine and Windows 7 on the other, both are 32 bit.

In IE7, IE8, or IE9, go to Tools/InternetOptions/Advanced. Near the bottom of that screen is a reset button. I pressed the reset button and restarted IE9. Although I had to reconfigure the way I like the screen set up and re-enable some addons, Flash and Shockwave (and Java) are now working and installing fine.

Hi, Before you think about following the advice about resetting IE, you may want to read what Microsoft has to say about that.

You don't want to be surprised, as there is no one "Fix" for Flash Player issues.

Hi, Since you have two different computers, let's take one at a time. You can choose which one, just let me know.

I need browser versions that are Installed on the XP and the Win7.

What anti-virus programs on each?

Since Flash Player works thru the browsers that info is needed so I can have you check a couple of things.

Just be sure to let me know which PC you want to troubleshoot first.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Thanks. Using IE go to Tools, Manage addons and under "Show"(light text) look in those categories for Shockwave Flash Object.

If Installed, make sure it's Enabled and what version is it?

Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Open the Flash folder and let me know what files are listed.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Thanks. Your Flash files or IE are correct with version 10.3.181.23. You didn't mention another browser but those Flash files are correct for whatever non-IE browser you've Installed Flash Player on. The control for that browser is Shockwave Flash plugin and would be located in that browser's plugins and it would be FP vs 10.3.181.14. You can verify that NPSWF32.dll file by right clicking on it and clicking on Properties. It should be that .14 version also.

Is Flash Player working with that browser? Also mention which one it is and version number when you reply back.

Win7 with the Service Pack 1, included the feature ActiveX Filtering. Check this to see if there is a block from it.

To turn on ActiveX Filtering
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, point to Safety, and then click ActiveX Filtering.

To turn off ActiveX Filtering on a specific website
In Internet Explorer, click the Filter button in the Address bar, and then click Turn off ActiveX Filtering.

To turn off ActiveX Filtering on all websites
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, point to Safety, and then click ActiveX Filtering.

Also, go to Tools, Internet Options and make sure that the Setting under the Security tab is set to Medium for the Internet Zone. Sometimes this is set too high and blocks that ActiveX Control in the addons.

Thanks,

eidnolb

I am using IE 8, but I have Mozilla installed because I thought maybe it would work with it, but I get the same problem.

the .dll file is version .14 as well.

Flash player does not work with Mozilla Firefox (just downloaded the lastest version) or IE 8.

Active X filtering is not turned on.

I changed the setting from Medium-High to Medium.

Thanks!

That's fine on FF. Just check and make sure the Shockwave Flash plugin is enabled, etc. You don't use adblock or any Flash block for FF or IE do you?

After updating FF to the latest version, did you perform a reboot(restart)? If not, I would.

You may want to go to this site: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/. Right click on the Flash logo, Settings,
then UNcheck the hardware acceleration in Display Settings.

Something is conflicting and or blocking Flash Player from working. When Flash Player is Installed correctly, then it's something else causing the issue.

Try a random youtube video with both browsers, and let me know how that goes.

These sites you mentioned that are giving you that error, are they older websites? If so you may want to use the Compatibility View just to check if that would make a difference. (Tools>Options)

Now Norton can't be discounted but I wanted to consider these other options first.

Going to be out for a time, but will check back in later.

Thanks,

eidnolb

It is enabled. I am not blocking any ads.

Yes, I have rebooted multiple times.

I unchecked acceleration box.

I can view youtube videos. Some of the sites I am trying to open are radio station "listen here" links. Here are some links I try to open:

http://www.edgelittlerock.com/main.html

http://www.kssn.com/main.html

I click on the listen tabs and I get that error message. There are some other sites we use that do the same thing.

I tried the compatibility view, but nothing helps.

Thanks!

Hi, ok thanks. On the edge station, once it comes up can you right click anywhere above the rate song info? If so, click on Settings. Do you see a small pop up Adobe Flash Player Settings? Local Storage?

If not, then close that and go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html

Make sure a check is in both boxes and move the slider to 10KB. Then go back to the edge and try again.

If that doesn't work now, then up at the right hand top corner is a Help. Click on that and take a look at Troubleshooting.

Check the above with both browsers.

By the way, did you mean you updated Flash Player for Firefox or updated the Firefox browser?

I haven't checked the other link yet, but do the above first.

Thanks,

eidnolb

When you encounter problems, is it typically with popup windows?  Both links you gave earlier brought me to popups that appeared to be using similiar players.  Any chance you could post a screenshot of the window that appears with Flash content that isn't working?

Thanks,
Chris

I do see the settings and local storage....what should I do?

I also checked both boxes and changed to 10KB.

Done on both browsers.

I am using both updated FF and FP.

Thanks!

Hi, thanks. I've seen the screenshot too. Now that you've checked both of those boxes in the Local Storage, take a look here:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager.html#117096

Especially read this: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html  This is the

Website Storage Settings Panel     After you read this, you will see that the Panel you just set works with this Panel.

Now I don't know if this would apply, but if you have any .jpg pic try this. Right click and open it and choose Open With. Then use "Choose program". A window should open allowing you to choose. Do you have "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file? I do not have mine checked since I may need other players to work. Chris may have add'l info, but this is just something I thot of.

Thanks,

eidnolb

It works fine in the area you selected. I only get that error message when I click on the "listen" link.

Okay, I took at look at those links. I made some changes.

I also took care of the .jpeg "always use this program".

Still does not work.

This is just crazy. I have got to be overlooking something.

Thanks for all of your help guys.

LATEST

Hi, sorry for the delay. I didn't see that you posted this latest. It is puzzling, since Flash Player is Installed correctly and the addons.

Do you have Silverlight, RealPlayer, Quicktime Installed in either browser addons/plugins?

Do you use the Bing bar for FF?

Now I do have a question as to why you are using Symantec Endpoint Protection? Normally home users have NIS or 360 etc.

This program is very heavy duty. Let me know the addons and plugins in both browsers from Symantec. Any Toolbars?

I'm familiar with the NIS addons and the 360, but not SEP.

Thanks,

eidnolb
