"initializing" then nothing. + alternate download methods page is no more? Stuck. What do I jigger?

There's been a problem getting the machine to complete the updates for a few years, it's like a tradition.  And now the fallback page for those like me is gone as far as I can tell.    XP, internet explorer 8, avira & comodo which I've tried disabling with no improvement to the download process.
