Some Flash objects loading, others not

New Here ,
Feb 01, 2010 Feb 01, 2010

About two weeks ago I had to format my C: drive and reinstall windows, essentially starting over from the beginning with the exception of copying over some things I had saved on an external HD.

I reinstalled everything, and all was well, but just a few days ago I noticed that certain flash related things online weren't loading. I tried watching a video on Myspace, and all I got was a spinning circle

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6128/myspacevideosmall.png

No matter how long I wait, it just spins, and spins, and never loads.

Then I noticed the myspace music players wouldn't load either.

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1955/myspacemusicsmall.png

Just a big blank space

However when you right click where the player should be, it's clear theres a flash object there.

I thought this was some issue with Myspace, but then I tried other sites as well.

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/9837/funnyordie1small.png

Nothing ever seems to load.

And there is one other issue.

When you right click where the player should be, and click settings, you get the Flash settings to pop up, but it's frozen...

http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/6061/settingss.png

I can't uncheck to enable hardware acceleration, I can't click the help button, and I can't even click the close button. Nothing clicks.

Now, it's obvious it's a problem to do with Flash, and not the browser, because I get the exact same problems for the exact same websites in both Firefox, and IE8, both of which have Adobe Flash Player 10.0.42.34 installed.

Oh, and for the record, Youtube, Hulu, Google Video, Last.fm's Music Player, and pretty much ever flash based advertisement all load.  I'm not sure why those ones do, and the ones above don't, along with a few others.

So does anyone know what the issue is? I've uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash a few times, and nothing seems to help.

I followed your advice...uninstalled flash, installed silverlight, reinstalled flash, but nothing has changed.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled Flash four or five times now, trying different versions, but again, nothing changes. I still have the same problem everytime.

I think I might have a reason, but no solution.

When trying to view a video on another site, I got this message.

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/9161/3rdparty1.png

When I follow the link, it takes me to this page,

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/3531/3rdparty2.png

The problem?

I cannot click the check box to allow third-party flash content.

I can click the Never Ask Again box. I can move the the bar from left to right. But for some reason the third-party box just doesn't want to check off.

I don't think it would matter if it did thought, because no matter what I do in the storage settings, they never save. I'll click and check "never ask again", leave the page, come back, and it will be unchecked. I'll change the amount from None to 10MB, leave, come back, and it's back to None.

So um... any solution to this?

Hello, I read this thread tonight because of the subject. Now I usually try to help people with their Flash Player issues and related problems.  From your information about the Global Settings perhaps your problems are related. Before tonight I

had not read up on that and quite frankly didn't know too much about it at all. However due to your thread I did and read a lot about it. Since it is very late to go into now I just wanted to tell you that I read enough to know that it is not the easiest to apply.  From what I read it could be that some of your Global Settings could be causing your issues with certain websites.

One thing that you can check until I get back to you on the Global Setting issue, is find "View and manage your Internet

Explorer add-ons", look for All add-ons and there should be a drop down arrow. Look for Shockwave Flash Object...

ActiveX Control.....Flash10d.ocx....vs 10.0.42.34(it may or may not be listed) and be sure it is Enabled.

Just one comment on the Global Settings, you may have to reset them. I set all of mine tonight and had to go back and

reset 2 of them. They are somewhat confusing, in that some setting can over ride another setting.

You also may want to have Adobe confirm that Flash Player is installed and the version. You can do that here:

http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about

Thanks,

eidnolb

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I do have flash installed,

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/2946/33445303.png

As you can see, the flash banner is loaded, Adobe verifies that I have flash 10.0.42.34, but, I still have my problem.

I also checked the Internet Explorer add ones, and Flash is there, and Enabled. I also want to remind you that this issue is the same for both Internet Explorer and Firefox. All the flash objects that load in Firefox will load in Internet Explorer, and all the objects that don't load in Firefox also do not load in Internet Explorer.

Finally, you mentioned reseting my global settings... how do I do that? I'll give it a try, but I'm not sure it will work, because I never touched any of flash's settings. The problem I had is there from the very start, right after I install flash. By the way, just for the heck of it, I uninstalled and re-installed flash one more time today, in the hopes that somethng would have changed, but nope, still get the exact same issue everytime.

Hi, I read your reply and looked at the test results and noticed that you used FF to test. You probably should have tested using IE also.

You checked your add ons and confirmed that "Flash" is there and enabled. Please confirm that this "Flash" is Shockwave Flash Object as I listed. The reason I mention this is because you may have Shockwave Player installed and that is a program and it also has an  ActiveX Control in the add ons. However that is an entirely different ActiveX than the one I am looking for. The Shockwave Flash Object is the ActiveX Control for Flash Player, the other one is for the Shockwave Player. They are not the same.

The reason that I said the Global Settings may be an issue, is because you received that message that "User must allow 3rd party Flash content" and then it directed you to the Global Setting site. We will cover that, but I want to make sure that you have the required files in your C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash. Open that and right click on the Flash

folder and post back all that is listed there.

Then using IE, do the Adobe Flash Test and post back those results.

Using FF, go to Tools>Add ons>Plug-in Panel; look for SWF vs 10.0.42.34 and make sure it is Enabled.

Before we address the Global Settings, we need to confirm that Flash Player is installed in both browsers and all of the Flash Player files pertaining to both are installed in the Flash folder and both the ActiveX Shockwave Flash Object is the correct version in the IE add ons and the SWF correct plug-in is installed in FF.

Also, please take a look at the screenshot of the test result you posted using FF. At the top where the Adobe logo is that says "Adobe Flash Player", is that a Red x?

Would you mind telling me what time zone you are in? I am in the U.S., E.S.T.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Again, thanks for the reply, and trying to help. Hope I can get this resolved in the future.

Hi, just to let you know the screen shots are fine and glad you sent the links. Will post back as soon as I look at them a little closer. I do see something amiss in the Flash folder that should not be there.

While I am doing that, would you mind going to Programs and Features via Control Panel and post back each Java entry;

any listing of DLM or Adobe Download Manager; GetPlus and all Adobe programs(other than Flash Player).

Thank you,

Hi, Ok, The IE and FF Adobe test confirmed you do have FP vs 10.0.42.34. The Shockwave Flash Object 10.0.42.34 is installed and Enabled in IE add ons, likewise for SWF for FF.

It is the files in the Flash folder that are certainly causing you problems. You must have installed the Flash Player Beta

version after installing the FP vs 10.0.42.34. In addition there is an old file Flash9j.ocx that did not get removed. It also appears that you installed the Beta in IE and FF as well.

I can identify the IE files, but I need for you to go back to the Flash folder and right click only on the following FF files and

obtain the version #'s.  uninstall_plugin.exe and NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Here is a list of the Adobe/Flash/Java related program I have listed in the Add/Remove Programs section in Control Panel

Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin
Adobe Reader 9.3
Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 15  (note: I dont have Jave 1.6 because it won't install. That's a whole different story)

Macromedia Fireworks 8
Mozille Firefox (3.5.7)

Windows Internet Explorer 8

And yes, I did install the Flash Player beta, and even Flash Player 9, but only because Flash Player 10 was giving me problems. I thought upgrading/downgrading would help, but it didn't, because I had the same issue with Beta and Flash 9. After that plan failed, I decided to come here and ask for help. Beta and 9 have been uninstalled for a few days now.

Here are the requested versions for the two files

uninstall_plugin.exe

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9233/uninstall.png

NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe

Hi, thanks for the update. I am somewhat confused as your prior Flash folder screenshots showed the beta and 9j. If you have uninstalled them then that is good. So just to be clear, the following is what is now installed in the Flash folder:

Flashplayer.xpt                            Flash10d.ocx

KB923789.inf                                 FlashUtil10d.exe

NPSWF32.dll                                  uninstall_active.exe

NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe             install.log

uninstall_plugin.exe

Please check and if there is any difference, please advise. (I don't need any screenshots for this)

Now that you have the correct Flash folder files and the related ActiveX/plugin, then you really need to take care of Java.

Have you tested any of the websites that were causing problems since removing the beta/vs9? Any difference?

Most websites use the latest version of Flash Player and the latest version of Java. I'll give you the exact instructions for Java. There shouldn't be any problem. Java, unlike Flash Player, installs into IE and FF at the same time. You do not need to install using each version of the browser. You would remove that J2SE thru the Remove option in Programs & Features and afterward, Reboot. Then install the JRE 6 update 18. Java would also install the add ons in IE and FF as well.

On the Mozilla website they state that the websites use the oldest version of Java, even if you have a newer one installed also. That is why any old Java needs to be removed besides being a security risk.

Let me know.

Thanks.   The Screenshot were great, I didn't have any problem at all.

There was no different between the websites with the flash objects that refused to work when I used the Beta, and when I tried to use Flash 9 I got a message telling me to update to Flash 10. So basically, no luck.

The only difference between the files in my Macromed/Flash folder and the list you posted is capitalization, such as flashplayer.xpt, instead of Flashplayer.xpt, and I have uninstall_activeX.exe instead of uninstall_active.exe , but I'm pretty sure the capital F and missing X were unintentional and not important, right?

I uninstalled J2SE like you asked, but I can't seem to installed JRE 6 update 18. The whole reason I had J2SE installed was because Windows refuses to let me install the latest java. Basically when I download it, and attempt to run jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe (the 15.5MB installer for JRE 6), I get an error saying ...

Windows Installer

"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a calid Windows Installer package."

I'm going to have to open an account and make a thread on the Java support forums too it seems, because I don't think we'll be able to fully solve my flash problem until I have the latest Java version installed, am I correct?

Though I'm beginning to think there is just something flat out wrong with my installation of Windows XP, because all of these problems never happened before I formatted my drive and re-installed Windows last month. Regardless, I would like to solve this problem now, because I'd hate to have to spend hours formating and re-installed Windows (along with all my other programs) only to have the same problem. After all, this problem with Flash, and now this problem with Java, are the only issues I am having.  Again, thanks for your patience and help.

Hi fuchikoma, ok on the files in the Flash folder.  I just now noticed that you are running XP, which service pack?

The error message you received from trying to run the latest Java makes me wonder if there are any updates to Windows that perhaps have not been installed. When I updated my Java to JRE 6 update 18, I did not use the optional Java installer. Did you?

The Windows Installer is mentioned and I know that this update came down from Windows Update. In my Add/Remove it doesn't always list the date when Windows Updates are installed. When dates are listed, they sometime list the date as when Microsoft first issued it rather than the date I installed it.

Also, since you are using IE8, the genuinst.exe is listed in the Flash folder. I do not have that. However in my manage add ons I have the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool ...ActiveX Control and in file LegitCheckControl..

What I do know is that the Windows Installer must be installed and also the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool both must be installed. Sometimes I disable certain ActiveX Controls if I am not using them for awhile. Then when I go to Windows Updates, I cannot receive any updates nor will WU work. Then I remember to Enable that add on. In addition to those two, the Windows Installer, the WGAVT, in my add ons is MUWebControlClass, another ActiveX Control and in file

muweb.dll.

I would check that you have these. I don't quite understand the Windows Installer, but from the error message you received trying to run Java 6 update 18, it sounds like you may not have this installed and for whatever reason it is needed. This is just my opinion.

Thanks,

eidnolb

I also have info on reformatting and reinstalling Windows XP, but you probably already have that info. I have never attemped that.

The Windows Installer issue was called into question in my thread on the Java forums. You can read about it here:

http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5427398

Basically though, the person there had the same idea as you, and that there was a problem with my Windows Installer, and I should run Windows Update. However the very first thing I did after installed Windows was run windows update, and I've had all the updates for almost a month. But just in case there was something corrupt with my Windows Installer ver 3.1, I downloaded and installed version 4.5, and it did not solve the problem.

However another thing that came up in that thread, was that this same error I am recieving, the "This installation package could not be opened" one, also apparently happens for some users trying to install OpenOffice 3. The thing is I already had OpenOffice for a while now. So this is really one big confusing mess.

Hi, thanks for that Java link, I'll read it in a few minutes. Does that Openoffice3 have an ActiveX Control or more than one?

I just read something recently about OpenOffice and should have it in a folder, will check. Just from memory it concerned the code.

Will post back in a few.

Hi, I read  that thread and looked at every .PNG you posted. What caught my eye was the possible blocking from an anti-virus. Now I use Advast and did NOT even turn if off when updating Flash Player nor the Java and had no problem. The Windows Firewall would not block Java either, I use it also and did NOT turn it off for either install.

As soon as I saw Ad-Aware then this may very well be the blocker.  Now I know you said you turned it off, but believe me

when you disable some of these Anti-virus programs there are components that still run in the background. A couple of weeks ago a user had Ad-Aware and I sent this link. There are two different versions of Ad-Aware so take a look at both.

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=19804

Will continue my Openoffice info search.

On the Java install, if you can disable the Ad-Aware per the instructions in the link and try to install Java again, my advice would to not use any installer, simple the offline i586.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hey eidnolb,

I tried you're suggestion, and sadly, it didn't do the trick. I shut off Ad-aware as per the instructions, ( I even went a step further and changed Ad-aware's folder name in Program Files so it couldn't start even if it wanted to) restarted,  and attempted to install Java with ad-aware completely off, and no luck. Same exact error as before. I hope the people on the java forum can give some more suggestions soon though. Sorry this is taking so long to fix.

Hi, That is so aggravating I am sure. It is puzzling in that the message regarding the Windows Installer you have updated

to vs 4.5. The message itself suggested to me that something, for lack of a better word, was saying that "Windows Installer package needed to approve the Java program" Now evidently nothing prevented it from being downloaded, right, since you put it on your desktop? I have not encountered that message before from anyone, or probably would have had it bookmarked:-)  It really is a conflict with Java, because you certainly didn't receive any message like that

with all of the Uninstalling/Installing of Flash Player. That in itself would rule out the Anti-Virus, but I gave you the Ad-Aware link anyway, just in case there was some chance it might work.

Perhaps I'll roam around Microsoft/Java and see what I can find out. I research a lot anyway.

Oh, on the Openoffice, all I could find is that in the fall of 2009 there was a bulletin issued by them of a security issue

regarding vs 3.1. Then 3.1.1 build 9420 was issued. I have not checked to see if there is anything more current.

Also I'm going to review Global Settings since that message came up. That message from the one site keeps coming to my mind "User must allow 3rd party Flash content" when you tried to view a video. Until I read all of the different settings

I had no idea all of the settings were already set, by default?  I wonder if these settings somehow would trigger that message regarding the Windows Installer. But then again, this takes us right back to Flash Player, no problem there.

Will let you know what I find out.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi again, I noticed this in your IE add ons "asusTek_sysCtrlClass. It caught my attention because no Publisher was listed.

You might want to take a look at this :

http://www.bing.com/search?q=asustek+sysctrl+class+asustek+sys+ctrl.dll&form=QBLH&qs=AS&pq=asusTek&s...

I read about this over the weekend and when it was trying to be downloaded just as a test, the Anti-Virus went on high alert and stopped this MyWebSearch from being downloaded. From the discussion it sort of takes over the computer.

Thot you might like to check it out.

Thanks for keeping up with this thread and trying to help so much.

The Asus thing I don't believe is much of a problem. My virus and spyware/malware searches never turned up anything regarding that file. Also, Asus is the company that made my mother board (Asus P5L-MX Motherboard), and I have 2 Asus related programs installed (ASUS Update, which updates my drivers, and Asus PC Probe II which monitors my PC's temperatures and fan speed). Regardless though, I removed the asustek thing, because I don't think I even need it.

Hi, ok that's good. What seems to be happening with this Mywebsearch is that it gets on computers thru other program installs. I didn't mean to say that Asus was adware. I just finished reading several HJT logs and Asus was never identified

as adware, it was just the vehicle that Mywebsearch got in with. The other person I referred to had installed a different program altogether and just thot Mywebsearch was part of it; but it wasn't.

Well, have a good evening.

BIG UPDATE

Sort Of

This is going to sound weird, but I started searching around more online for help, and I got this idea to make a another User Account. So I went to control panel, user accounts, and I created a new guest account which I just called "Test".

I logged into this new account, and attempted to install Java, and this time I got an error telling me I didn't have the right privilages to install this program. I logged back into my primary account (which is set as an Administrator), deleted the "Test" account, and made another new account called "TestAdmin", which has admin privileges instead of being a guest.

I now logged into this account, and I could finally Install Java.

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/953/javanew1.png

After I installed Java, I opened Firefox, went to myspace to see if the music player was there, and guess what, it is.

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/7972/myspacenew1medium.png

Videos work too.

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/7180/myspacenew2medium.png

I then log out of the test account and back into the main account, check the Add/Remove Programs list, and Java JRE 6 update 18  is indeed installed. But.... the flash is still acting up.

It appears Java has no relationship to my problem, because out of curiosity, i went BACK to the TestAdmin account, uninstalled Java, and the myspace music player and video player work just fine.

The issue here appears to be my original user account, which seems to be corrupt or something...

I guess the only way to truly solve this problem is....

1. Create a brand new user account, move all my files to this account, and then delete the corrupt one.

or

2. Copy the correct working files from the TestAdmin account to this account in the hopes that it will fix it.

or

3. Somehow figure out what it is that makes this account bad, and fix that problem, so I won't have to copy/move/delete anything.

Good Morning(for me)  Well, you've made progress. Interesting. I'll just share with you what I read on the Java forum.

Well, after I read the entire Windows Installer info on Technet. As you know IE8 has permission levels and you must have

Admin. privileges. The discussion on the Java forum was a user could not get IE to use Java and the helper told him to

go to Open Java via Control Panel>Advanced>Default Java for Browsers and make sure IE is checked. The user said IE

was checked but the option for IE is greyed out. The helper asked if the user could Uncheck it. The poster said no. The

helper said "you're not logged on as Administrator and you don't have the ability to write to the Registry. I know also that FF needs to be checked also.

The information that you found out makes sense because the message you received(the one with 1 red x & the !warning)

"This installation package could not be opened..."  meaning you do have have permission (no Admin. privilege) So like you say, perhaps with the new install that account lost it's Admin. privilege?

Make sure that you always have at least one Admin. Account, you can have two if you like. Following is a link for XP and

setting up accounts.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/accounts.mspx  This site has great screenshots and step by step. SEE SCREEN

SHOT 3, Change an Account, can you change the account you refer to as "primary" to Administrator (to "reset" it) then Beboot. Would this effect the change?  Just a thot. There are times I wish I had a test computer.

See what you think about it.

On your possible solutions 1, 2 or 3. I like three better:-) Perhaps you can just give that account Admin privileges? I know you said it had that but if it did when you first tried to install Java, why the error? Did you check the status after reinstalling? Just thinking out loud.

After all the reading last night and what you found out, I need to check my own system.LOL
