Hi.

On "deep" system scans my antivirus software (BitDefender 2009 Antivirus with

BitDefender UIScanner v.12) flags and reports a series of Adobe software setup

files as password protected and unscannable.

Examination of the files shows that they are all password protected PDF files that

are part of setup filesets in CAB archives from Adobe downloads.  The list, from

the Bitdefender scan log, is:

  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\FR\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgFRA.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\FR\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgENU.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\FR\Rdr60FRE010.cab=]RdrMsgFRA.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\FR\Rdr60FRE010.cab=]read6000win_ENUhpcq0003.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\GR\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgENU.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\GR\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgDEU.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\GR\Rdr60DEU010.cab=]read6000win_ENUhpcq0003.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\GR\Rdr60DEU010.cab=]RdrMsgDEU.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\IT\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgENU.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\IT\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgITA.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\IT\Rdr60ITA010.cab=]RdrMsgITA.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\IT\Rdr60ITA010.cab=]read6000win_ENUhpcq0003.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\SP\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgENU.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\SP\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgESP.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\SP\Rdr60ESP010.cab=]RdrMsgESP.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\SP\Rdr60ESP010.cab=]read6000win_ENUhpcq0003.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\US\Adobe Reader 6.0.10.cab=]read6000win_ENUhpcq0003.pdf Password-protected Not scanned
  • C:\SWSetup\Adobe\US\Data1.cab=]RdrMsgENU.pdf Password-protected Not scanned

Three questions:

  1. Do these files belong to standard adobe software setup procedures?
  2. Why are these files password protected?
  3. Are these files hijackable or do they otherwise present security risks?

Thanks!

Jim

From looking at these file names it appears to be Adobe Reader 6.0; a version that is more than 6 years old.

What are the timestamps of these files?
