I need help again, please!!!

I have Windows Vista, Norton Anti Virus & IE8.

I can go on a website & it will work fine but, the next time I go on it (or go another site), it says "Requires Flash" on bottom left hand screen & freezes/stops loading the site.

I confirmed the new version of FP10 & Shockwave have installed successfully (movie is a little slow).

I also went to "Manage Add-Ons" & show Shockwave Flash Object & Adobe PDF Link Helper, both are enabled.

Am I supposed to run something else? What am I missing?

Hi,

It appears something to do with your Anti-Virus Software or IE8.

For the Anti Virus:

Check the privacy settings to see if it is blocking any software or activex controls/objects from your internet explorer(in this case, Flash). Sometimes the protection can be set to high making Norton block content more than it needs to.

For Internet Explorer:

Check the security control panel in the bottom right hand corner. Double click on it and see which websites are being blocked by IE. Sometims you have to add the url to a list of approved sites that sometimes IE blocks automatically.

Hi Vincent,

I checked both as you suggested.

The privacy settings for my Anti-Virus isn't blocking any software or activex controls/objects from IE (which I also thought might be the problem). I also checked the security control panel in IE but, it is "off".

Thank you for looking into this. In the meantime, I just wanted to answer a couple of your questions.

I currently do not have FF installed at this time.

I looked in Add-Ons again and the only other listing I have besides Shockwave Flash Object is, Shockwave ActiveX Control but, not Flash10e.ocx.

I have Norton Anti-Virus but, my Firewall is thru Windows (in case that makes any difference).

I'm not sure why you removed your suggestion but, really hope you (or anyone) won't give up just yet.

I uninstalled/reinstalled the new FP version and Shockwave. I now have the following in C:/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash:

Manage Add-Ons: (still don't have Flash10e.ocx listed. How can I add this?)

Also, when I click FlashUtil10e.exe, to "Run As Adminstrator" as it suggests for Windows Vista users, it doesn't do anything. What do I need to do to "Run As Administrator"?

Is it the settings in my C Drive? (I didn't alter anything)..My AntiVirus is disabled & "silent mode" is off (to allow program to go thru), Windows Firewall & UAC are off & all my browsers are closed. I'm not sure what else it can be.

I had finally got this thing to work great for about a week before new version kicked in & is now screwing me up again.

Hi, In you Flash folder you have 4 correct Flash files. The FlDbg10e.exe is a debugger version that you downloaded and needs removed. When you Uninstalled that removed the FF or other browser Flash files. You had said that you didn't use or have FF, but the files were there either for FF or another browser, now they have been removed.

Not sure why that wasn't removed during the Uninstall, perhaps some action wasn't completed.

Did you Uninstall from the link at Adobe? Did you Install with the Installer from your Desktop?

The Java needs updated, but that is not the main problem.

Go to your Programs and Features from the Control Panel and post back all Java listings with version numbers if listed.

Post back also the complete line in your add ons of Shockwave Flash Object. You say it is enabled. I need to know what

does the "Flash???.ocx" say.

The Administrator is an account that you set up whenever you established accounts in the beginning. Were you using that account? Only Administrators can install ActiveX Controls, etc. It appears that you probably are, since you have Shockwave ActiveX Control in your add ons. Do you have Shockwave Player installed?

Hi Eidnolb,

I uninstalled from my desktop & it did remove everything including FlDbg10e.exe. It only installed again, because I ran "Updates" for FP10 that created that file (thought it would've helped). I removed it now.

I reinstalled new versions of both FP10 & Shockwave Player from Adobe website (got "f" logo, "Installation Complete" & Avatar movie)

I updated my Java (thank you). The version listed in Program & Features now is: Java(TM) 6 Update 18 (all enabled in Manage Add-Ons)

Okay, I clicked on Shockwave Flash Object (in Manage Add-Ons) & the file does show Flash10e.ocx (yes, enabled)

Before I heard back from you, I was checking the "Properties" under FlashUtil10e.exe & I actually had messed with "Security" tab settings a few weeks ago. Is there a way I can restore to original or, how should it be set up?

Hi, well that is progress:-) I'm not sure I understand about properties. Are you speaking of properties with FlashUtil10e.exe? Or the Security Tab via Internet Options? I don't have a security tab under FlashUtil10e.exe.

Glad the SWO is in add ons and correct and the update for Java.

You should be pretty much complete. I'm sure you rebooted, etc.

Keep in mind that if in the future you receive a prompt from Adobe that an update for FP is available and choose to Install, that when that is finished, REBOOT.

Just clarify the Security/Properties question.

Sure, I can clarify. It's the FlashUtil10e.exe file.

Right click FlashUtil10e.exe
Left click Properties...It shows a bunch of Tabs (including Security)

Click on the "Security" Tab, it has 2 Sections:

1. Group or User Names:
     Everyone
     System
     Administrators (my name-PC/Administrators)
     Users (my name-PC\Users)
     Anonymous Logon

2. Permissions for Everyone          Allow    Deny
      Full Control
      Modify
      Read & Execute
      Read

Write

Special Permission

Which permissions should be "Allowed" or "Denied" for Group or User Names?

Almost there. I think this may be the main problem now.

Ok, that's IE8. There are many times that I wish I had a test computer:-)

I'm not sure what that means other than perhaps giving permission to use the file? I would have thought that the Administrator Account Status would already give permissions needed. But, I'm not sure with IE8.

Is each Flash file properties set up that way? What happens if they are? Suppose you give one permission on one Flash

file and a different permission on another? If I understood the reason for this Security Tab, then I could make a better

recommendation.

Before you make a selection on this Flash file, would you mind checking on say the Flash10e.ocx to see if the Properties

is set up the same way?

Flash10e.ocx has fewer Tabs under Properties (& a couple of differences under Security Tab).

I don't know what would happen if you gave different permissions on Flash Files but, they are all set up that way. I am not knowledgeable about this. (sorry).

I tried to copy what I have in Flash10e.ocx into my FlashUtil10e.exe but, it wouldn't allow me to put the check marks.

Well, I don't know anything about that feature in IE8, so you are ahead of me:-) I know what I would do before changing a setting on those Flash files and that would be check the Microsoft IE info. Especially since the settings are different per file. I haven't read anything about those settings on Adobe.

I have a couple of contacts that I can email that use IE8 and ask them about it. I know you don't want to wait for that,

but not having a full understanding of this I would not want to recommend anything that would possibly cause a problem for you.

If you did select a permission, can you change it back again? I would suppose any selection would require a reboot though.

Not a solution for you, I know but don't have one yet.

I wish I could remember which Group/User Names I made changes to allow/deny. But, it was a few weeks ago & it was before this new version took place & I don't recall what the original settings were. That's why I wish that there was something I can refer too & reset back to original settings.

But, you have been a great help anyway & I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this.

Meanwhile, I hope I can figure it out . But, if you do happen to ask your contacts, can you please let me know? No matter when.

I know what you mean about remembering; if I don't make notes on changes I make I would be in trouble:-)

Because I have not read anything pertaining to this on any Adobe site, I just tend to think it is IE8. And even if I haven't seen it on the Adobe sites, one would think someone would have posted here about it.

My desktop has so many folders, you would not believe and they are all categorized according to topic.

I'll do some researching on this and also will let you know what my contacts say.

Do you know if this is unique to Flash files, or would it apply to others as well?

Between the two of us (or more), we'll figure it out.

Hi, well I did a little researching and it was as I thought. This permission setting is all under Vista, not even IE.

Here is the main link, but be sure to read the topics on the side bar and any others that are there. It appears from what I read that the Security settings for the files and folders are set by Vista and come under the User Account settings.

Following is another one. When reading these articles security can mean of the system, not always is it pertaining to files and folders. Computers are complicated!! 🙂
