Flash doesn't install with IE, works with Firefox

Hi,

I am using Vista 32 bit.  Many months ago I used IE 8.  One day Flash stopped working.  I tried many times to uninstall and reinstall.  It would say installed correctly, but didn't work.  After days of frustration, I gave up and switched to Firefox, where it worked just fine. I am currently on Flash V 10.2.153.1 and just recently updated to Firefox 4.  A few days ago I downloaded Chrome and it works there too.  Today I thought I would try downloading IE 9, to see if the new version might cause it to start working, but no luck.

I have looked at Windows/system32/macromed/flash for the file NPSWF32.dll; it shows v 10.2.153.1.

In IE tools - manage addons under show all addons it has shockwave flash object enabled 10.2.159.1.

When I go to the Adobe page that is supposed to show what version of Flash is installed, I get nothing - the red F is not rotating.

Now here is one more thing - I created a test user account on my computer, logged off my account, logged on to the test account, and Flash worked with IE, and showed v 10.2.159.1.  Logged back on to my old account - still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Thanx

My first guess while reading your post was the "kill-bit", which only affects ActiveX controls on Internet Explorer.

However, when you wrote that it works fine on another account, that killed my "kill-bit" theory.

What is different with the account where it doesn't work from the other account?  Something strange in the name, e.g. starting with a period?  Can you delete and re-create the account (with saving all data before that, of course)?

Thanks for replying.  Yes I neglected to mention that I had already looked into the killbit idea and it was not set.  Nothing odd about the names either - just generic names.

Also, yesterday while I was digging around for possibilites, I came across mention of some Flash settings which you can only access through a utility on this website.  I tried to invoke it from IE, but of course it said I couldn't because Flash wasn't installed.  So I clicked the install and it said it needed to download the download manager.  I let it do that, then tried to install Flash again.  First time it froze saying I needed to close any application running Flash.  I closed the browser and tried again.  It said an error occurred and stopped, then a few seconds later it said successfully completed.  I brought up IE and tried a Youtube video - it worked!  I closed IE, started it again, went to Youtube again, nothing!  Thought I had it fixed, but couldn't get it to repeat that one success.  That's the most progress I've had in months.

I had been pondering creating another new account, call it Account3.  Then I log onto Account2 and copy my old Account1 folder to the new Account3 folder. Then I log into the Account3 folder and see if the problem has followed me there.  If it hasn't, I delete or rename Account1, then rename Account3 to Account1.

Sounds convoluted but I think it's more or less what you were suggesting.  Any thoughts?

    Thanks again.
