Flash Player 9 won't work with XP Home

I have Flash Player 9.0.124.0 on my laptop with XP Home Ed. Works fine and was able to go to a web site for our new doctor. Our home desktop computer wouldn't open same web site so I checked and it didn't have Flash player on it. I installed flash player on it but it still won't render any flash content. Uninstalled and reinstalled about 7-8 times. Did the uninstall steps mentioned on the forum.

Both systems are XP Home Edition SP2, IE 6 and Flash Player 9.0.124.0 (I tried to put the same version flash player on the desktop computer because I knew it worked on the other computer and had read some issues with version 10).

Any ideas what to try next?

    Hi Dresdenron-
You're OK so far. We don't want to KO your desktop's internet connection.
Check these settings, in no particular order. All are at IE6/Tools/Internet Options:
You can reset all zones to default if ya want, but verify settings anyway. You may have done some already.
Security/Custom/ scroll down to "ActiveX and Plugins" enable "Run ActiveX and plugins" and "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting". Scroll to "Scripting" enable "Active Scripting" and "Scripting of Java applets".

Advanced Tab: HTTP1.1 Settings- tick both HTTP1.1 boxes. Java (Sun) tick "Use JRE 1.6.0_11 (or whatever version you have) for <applet>. Multimedia: tick "Play animations in webpages", "Play sounds in webpages" and "Show pictures". Security: tick "Enable native XMLHTTP Support", "Use SSL3.0" and "Use TLS 1.0".

Connections/LAN Settings: if you have a proxy, it'll show here (if not, OK). If so, should be Port 80 (if not port 80, don't change it and relay this info).
    Remember to restart/reboot.

AVG Linkscanner/Safesearch had caused some page-loading/time-out issues/conflicting w/phishing filter awhile back. You can re-enable all that later if ya want.
Hopefully one of these settings is the culprit, and you're upngoin'. You can also do a Defrag, sometimes the rewrite fixes an issue, but it may take awhile (XP doesn't sched this by default)....
Lots of homework for ya.... Reply back w/results...

    Gary,

All settings were already OK except:

Advanced Tab: HTTP1.1 Settings- tick both HTTP1.1 boxes (second box had been unchecked)

Security: tick "Enable native XMLHTTP Support", (didn't show on my system)

After change rebooted and tried, problem still there.

    ----------------------------------------

Then I decided to run CC Cleaner, after running it Flash Player 9 worked fine!!

Enabled AVG Linkscanner/Safesearch again. Rebooted again. Flash Player still working O.K. Don't know what CC Cleaner fixed or took out but it resolved the problem.

    Thanks for all your help

    Ron

    Hi Dresdenron-
Yep, Firefox is a good browser. You'll have to install the FP Plug-in. Go ahead and get it in FP10.
Where did you get v901240? Hopefully from a reputable site and not some guy on the corner....(humor-arr-arr).
Can you get to other sites? If yes, does FP work there? If you couldn't get to the doc's website at all, it's an IE6 related issue, not FP. Many things can be the cause, probs w/IE6 (settings), AV/IS/Spyware/Adware/Popup blockers, etc.. These can also affect FP. I'm surprised that your desktop XP didn't have any FP. Usually it does have it, but the older versions don't show up in the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs list. They're way down in C:/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash folder.
If you can get to the site and ya just can't view flash, try these things:
First, through IE6, verify your installed version: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about
Then, go down to the Flash folder and see what's there. You should have a FlashUtil9x, a Flash9x.ocx, an uninstall file and maybe a txt file. While online as an Admn User, dbl click on the Util9x and a "wizard" panel should appear. Follow the instructions. Close/restart IE, test (go to the site). If no-go, reboot, go IE6 and test again.
Yes, this may get you to FP10, but your IE6 and flash will be working.
If still no-go (grrr) reply back and we'll do more tshooting.

    Gary,

    Thanks for quick response

"First, through IE6, verify your installed version: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about"

Doing this doesn't show installed version, as it does when I go there from my laptop.

"Can you get to other sites? If yes, does FP work there? If you couldn't get to the doc's website at all, it's an IE6 related issue, not FP."

Doesn't work at Adobe either. I can get to the doc's website but his intro page is a flash video. Get black screen and if you right click it will say "about Flash Player 9" so I know I'm there and FP is installed and running

"Many things can be the cause, probs w/IE6 (settings), AV/IS/Spyware/Adware/Popup blockers, etc.. These can also affect FP."

I tried checking the IE6 settings per stuff on the forums, disabled AVG AV and WINXP firewall and none of that helped. Pop-up blocker says it isn't on.

"I'm surprised that your desktop XP didn't have any FP. Usually it does have it, but the older versions don't show up in the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs list. They're way down in C:/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash folder."

Didn't look at Control Panel , just that going to web site said we needed FP.

"If you can get to the site and ya just can't view flash, try these things:

Yes, this may get you to FP10, but your IE6 and flash will be working."

Already did this also, the only "wizard" that comes up either automatically updates to FP10 or does nothing. In one of your previous threads you said it would "set" FP. What does that mean and what screen/button/icon should I be seeing?
Anyway, one of the several times I did it, I let it install FP10 but it didn't solve the problem.

    Hi Dresdenron-
Sounds like you have 2 versions dukin' it out. The Flash Version Tester will flicker and stop (go blank) if 2 versions are present. I can recreate this by loading my HP printer's full software which loads v901240 over my FP10. Then I can rt click on FP10, Run as Admn (Vista) and it boots v9 outta there. The method I had you try usually takes care of that. You're XP, so it's dbl click or rt click Run as yourself (as Admn User). This method can also be used offline and/but it won't update to the next version. I was just trying to get ya going.
I use the term "set" (get ready, set, GO!), but mostly 'cause it's short for "kick what remains of the previous version to the curb, then smack IE upside the head and tell it "use me, ya dummy!"" Them's teknikal stuff.
Sometimes the "wizard" (just a box that shows that an update is available- you can change how to be notified for updates here) doesn't show, but does it's thing anyway. Did you close/restart IE? Did you reboot? Did you exit/close progs like AIM, Yahoo Chat, Messenger, etc.? They use flash and can block the fix.
What do you have in the Flash folder? It's odd that the version tester/checker didn't pick up v9, but rt click/about did. They both link to the same place!
What do you mean "Doesn't work at Adobe either?" Does IE6 and FP work at other sites, but just NOT at the doc's? Is the doc's site a standard http and not a https? I ask all this for troubleshooting, not to be nosy...
Have you tried the ever-famous "clear your IE cache" (cookies, history, etc.)?

it should work , but i don't know what's wrong, if you want to use it for internet then i think you should go for firefox....you will not need any additional software to install
