Flash Player ActiveX Will Not Install

New Here ,
Mar 22, 2010 Mar 22, 2010

I am having trouble getting the flash player (activex) for Internet Explorer 8 to install. I have tried following the Adobe "how to fix" document but it is still not working. I have ran the uninstaller, checked IE settings, cleaned the registry, temp files, etc. Still will not install. Running the standalone installer, the install dies while registering C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash10e.ocx. I get a Adobe Flash Player ActiveX Setup error box: Failed to Install, for troubleshooting tips, please see http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_19166. This document did not help fix the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,  Not sure of the error, but do you have your security set at Medium for the Internet Zone? Tools>Internet Options>

Security Tab.

Are you the Administrator? You need to run with Admin. privileges.

Thanks,

Yes, the security is at medium.

I have tried running as myself (member of Administrators group) and I have also tried running logged in as Administrator.

Hi, Always use the log in as Administrator. Have you cleared your Temp files, cookies etc. Internet Options, delete cookies, delete offline files and delete files. I would do that first, you can delete History if you want.

I would do that before you start another Uninstall/Install.

What Anti-Virus/Spyware/Firewall? Some of these will block the install of the AcitveX Control.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Thanks for replying eidnolb. Yes, I have trying clearing all temp, cookies, etc. No help.

This machine is running Sophos AV and no firewall.

I think somehow the registry security is corrupt and preventing the ocx or a dll from registering properly. Which is weird, cause this is basically a fresh install (OS and all).

Ok, thanks. I'm not familiar with Sophos, but you need to know how to disable it. Many anti-virus programs have components that need disabled also, so check for that.

Let's take a look at your files first. Go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Right click on Flash and post back

all files listed there.

Then go to Tools, Manage add ons or however they are listed in IE8, and look for Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control...Flash10e.ocx and it must be enabled. If it is not listed that way, let me know how it is listed.

Thanks,

eidnolb

I tried diabling the AV previously and it did not make a difference.

The only thing inside the C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash folder is install log file.

As far as IE add-ons... no flash or shockwave objects are listed.

I appreciate you trying to help.

Hi Rams, sorry for the interruptions. I will give you the Uninstall/Install info and outline the steps you should take.

As long as you know how to disable the A/V that will be the main thing, since even when you are off the Internet, they

still run in the background. Also any icons that may be in the system tray.

It will be a few minutes . In the meantime, you can download to your desktop the Uninstaller:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Then download to your Desktop the Installer:

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.ex e

Ok Rams, If you have the Uninstaller and Installer on your Desktop, then you would do the following:

Disconnect from the Internet

Disable Anti-Virus and Firewall (if used & other than Windows)

Close all browsers

Check for any apps that use Flash, disable

RUN the Uninstaller. When finished,Reboot. When fully rebooted, RUn the Uninstaller again.

Reboot again, when finished. When fully rebooted,

RUN the Installer, when finished, Reboot Once.

Enable your Anti-Virus/Firewall if needed

Re-connect back to the Internet

Go to the test site: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Then check your Flash files and post back what is there.

Check Manage add ons (ALL) for the Shockwave Flash Object

Post back that info.

If you have any questions, please ask.

Thanks,

eidnolb

I sincerely apologize for the confusing emails, but I did reply to the thread with my possible solution:

BTW, I too have Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit

Hi,

I understand that you might have already received the correct reply to your IE issue, but I did have the same problem and thought I could share what I had to do to fix my similar issue.

I use Firefox as my primary browser, but still on occasion use IE. I couldn't get the Adobe Flash Player 10.045 to install using IE. I ended up having to :

Open IE - click on - Tools then click on - Manage Add-Ons - which opens the Manage Add-Ons menu. This will show "All Loaded Add-ons". But it might not show Shockwave or Active X, so you will need to click (on the left column about half-way down) on the Show: "all add-ons". Not sure if yours will be the same as mine, but scroll down until you come to the Adobe Systems Incorporated (not for Adobe Reader, below that) and you should see Shockwave Flash Object and below that Shockwave Active X Control.

When I couldn't get IE to install the two above items, it listed getPlus.exe (I think that's the right name), as being in a directory called Program Files > NOS. I think it might have been hidden, but can't remember that. Anyway, as long as that directory and file was there, I couldn't get IE to allow Adobe to install the program. You will need to disable and/or delete that getPlus.exe v.1.6.3 because it's corrupted, then manually go to the NOS directory and delete it. (Also, I think there was a file in the Program Files > Macromed > Flash location also. Sorry, but I can't remember that.)  Anyway, after you destroy the NOS file from your directory, restart your computer and go into IE again to see if it's still there.

After deleting the add-on and the getPlus.exe file, I was able to go to the Flash website at Adobe and the Flash Player 10.0.45 was installed. Just for info, anyone using Firefox the getPlus plugin will not allow Firefox to install Flash Player 10.0.45 either. Disable or Uninstall that plugin and download the Flash Player Plugin and install it manually.

hth,

jd

I am closing this thread... I have tried all suggestions and th installer will not work. I have just rebuilt the machine as I have already spend more time on the issue than it takes to rebuild.

I appreciate your help.

Thanks again for your time!

I am truly sorry that a solution hasn't been found and applied. I know how frustrating it can be.

I saw this in one of your earlier posts. Yes, the registry can affect computer performance. I

regularly use a registry cleaner. If you have a program, try it. Again, sorry about the no-fix solution.

If you need directions on how to find the Flash folder, let me know.

I should have listed them, but forgot.

Glad you solved your problem.

Are you talking about a Flash folder on my computer? or the Flash folder

to post my question? If your message is regarding my reply to the Flash

Player ActiveX will not install, I have already cleared up that issue on

my computer and was just hoping my info might help that person.

Jd, no I was not posting to you. That is why if everyone has their own thread, this confusion doesn't take place.

Keep in mind everyone's system is different, there is no one size fits all:-

Now, I'll get back to addressing the person that started this thread.

eidnolb

P.S. You have posted more than once on this thread and interrupted it. As I recall you never did start your own thread.

You did the same thing, hi-jacking someone else's thread. You waste other people's time, and I would prefer you would not go about doing that. The last time was the 14th that I was helping you. Then you disappear, didn't take my suggestion to start your own thread. Now you come back and again, come on someone else's thread. Your solution has nothing to do

with this person. I just don't understand people that have all kinds of solutions before they even have any idea what a person's issues are.

I think I got a little lost with regards to what you are asking for or if I provided all that you needed.

Please let me know what / where we are so I can continue to troubleshoot this problem.
