Flash Upgrade

Guest
Jun 11, 2010 Jun 11, 2010

On june 3rd I went to www.golfchannel.com and there was a message on their main page to upgrade Flash...that is when the problems started. Now after a week and many hours of uninstalling, installing and reading forums...I still cannot get any Flash to work on IE 8, like I have done for as many years as this has been available. Now, I downloaded FireFox and downloaded Flash, which was not without problems to do, but is now working, but I hate FireFox for other reasons.

I am very disappointed with Adobe wanting to charge me $39 for something that is their fault, not mine and suppose to be a free program....think about it...Flash was working for years and without me doing anything to my computer, it stopped...then when trying to upgrade, their system fails to properly download with IE. And I noticed there are many forum topics pertaining to Flash Upgrade problems...guess if a million frustrated users pay the $39, someone will get very rich for a problem they cannot provide easy directions to resolve.

I get an error saying IE was unable to dowload from either an Adobe.com or Macromedia.com web site. Yes, I have followed the proper steps, several times to uninstall and install...without even it saying there is a problem...just a page that opens saying if this happens do this or that, which never happens, and then it says to try manually and etc.

First time using Adobe site and not impressed.

Yes, frustrated, but will appreciate and follow steps and verifications suggested by those that are assured they can find and fix problem. Thanks.

Hi, Ok, we got that cleared up:-) Let's take a look at what is actually Installed in your Flash folder files.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Right click on the Flash folder and post back all files listed there. The NPSWF files, will need a right click and then click on Properties to obtain the version numbers.

Using IE, go to Tools, manage add ons (all add ons) and find Shockwave Flash Object..ActiveX Control..and make sure it is Enabled. Also let me know what is listed after Flash10?.ocx. What is in place of the question mark?

Using FF, look in the plug-ins for SWF and make sure it is Enabled. Also what version number is listed after the SWF?

Thanks,

eidnolb

Not sure why it showed blank...here is info again.

There is no Flash folder in C: area you mentioned.

Only these:

Flashinstall

Flashplayer.xpt

Flash Util10h ActiveX.dll

Flash 10h Plugin

NPSW32.dll

The file version for NPSW32 is: 10,1, 53,64

Undertools, manual add-ons, there is no Shockwave...to check for Enable, nor Flash10?ocx.

Not sure where to check in FF for SWF plug ins...still searching on this info for you.

I'll reply back to your last one requesting what I want to do on using FF or IE and/or uninstall/install info, after I send this.

Thanks.

Hi, well that is better reading whatever you did. Thanks. I am going to Supper but will check back in afterwards. I think I included what you needed, whatever you decide on FF.

Thanks,

eidnolb

P.S. Don't worry about the SWF(Shockwave Flash) it is a plug-in for Firefox. I'll tell you how to find it after you Uninstall and Install. You have no choice in doing the Un/In(Uninstall/Install) As long as I know:-)

Hi, thanks. Are you looking at the Flash forum, your thread? The post that I said was and still is blank can be seen, just wondered why you didn't see it.

Your Flash files are mixed and incomplete. Due to that you are going to need to Uninstall and Re-Install. Now the question before I post the info is Do you want to continue to use Firefox(FF)? If not, then disregard the Installer for FF below.

Download to your Desktop the Uninstaller:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Download to your Desktop the Installer for Internet Explorer:

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

Download to your Desktop the Installer for Firefox:

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

Be sure to read the following before starting:

Review the Uninstall instructions before you start. Close all browsers and Run the Uninstaller from your Desktop. When finished, Reboot(restart) your computer. When it is fully rebooted, Reboot again(to clear out all old files of IE)

NOTE: If you decide you want to Install FP(Flash Player) for FF, then Run it after you Run the Installer for IE. That way you will only need to Reboot Once.

Then Run the Installer for IE and when finished, Reboot once.

If you have any questions, please ask.

Thanks

I have went through the Uninstall for both IE and FF several times over the past week...and then installed process...in both cases, it showed that I intalled, but it only worked in FF no longer in IE, but I'll print out steps again and review each step your saying to try again, to assure that I don't miss anything. NOTE: I have always been able to use Flash both with IE and FF, until this requested Upgrade by the Golf Channel web site.So I don't want to say I will not use FF ever again...but prefer IE...so that is my goal at this time.

Just noticed you sent another reply...please don't reply to this until I catch up on on what you just sent and go through the hours of uninstall and install efforts you have asked me to do again...if any step fails, I take notes and share later. Also, I did go through the double reboot every time over pass week.

Thanks.

Oops! Guess it'd help if I actually included that copy

Thanx! I'll check that out later. -About to call it day here. Meanwhile, I did a little sleuthing after my initial message and found a non-MS-related site that speaks to some of this. Tried out a suggestion on it, which was to go into TOOLS in IE & Disable the add-ons. So far, after system re-boot, the Flash Player update was suddenly available 'on its own'. Haven't checked out YouTube, which was what took me down this path initially, but even the entire system is running much faster. Thinking I'll coast without those pesky add-ons as long as I can. Wish you the best.

Nooso:

Hi nooso, well you are doing pretty good:-) Smart move on those add ons. After Flash Player is Installed correctly along with the Shockwave Flash Object in IE and the SWF plug-in for FF then add ons, BHO's, Helpers, other ActiveX Controls are the cause of conflicts. Keep in mind that Flash Player is a browser plug-in (ActiveX Control for IE and a Plug-in for FF and other browsers) so any add on that conflicts with the browser is going to conflict with Flash Player, right? Right.

If a person had IE and no add ons whatsoever and Installed Flash Player, it is a piece of cake! The less add ons the better.

Now since you disabled all of your add ons you may find that you need some. The best way is to Enable one then test a website. If that add on doesn't cause a problem, then Enable another one and test a website. That way if you Enable the next one and there is a problem, then you know which one it is.

Ok, done with supper:-)

Thanks for the info you provided, every little bit helps from other users:-)

And so to make matters worse, I obviously don't look @ my e-mails in what most folks would consider "order", as to be seen form my reply to others of yours in scattered order today.

Hi nooso, well you are doing pretty good:-) Smart move on those add ons. Thanx for the props. Most of my computer exploration is from the gut, never having been "formally" trained or growing up with computers.

BHO's, Helpers... What the heck are these?

Hi nooso, I understand and that doesn't matter; it's your email. However this thread that you are posting on was started by AdobeChaser and he receives an email every time you or I or anyone else posts to it. That is one of the reasons you need to start your own thread. It is too confusing for you and for me to sort through his information and yours. Just start a thread in your name. It is one thing following one person and their information, I cannot follow more than one at a time.

I have done so, but don't want to do that. I don't work for Adobe, so I can sort of set my own rules:-)

Thanks,

I just went through three Uninstalls with double reboots each time and Install both together and seperate with Fire Fox and IE...shows that it installs on both using links you provided, but only Fire Fox has Flash working, never IE...in fact right now, the description on Golf Channel site to upgrade is gone, completely blank/white using IE. Works fine in FF. Also, no videos work on YouTube of course with IE.

Note: I did notice that the links you provided worked ten times faster than ones I have been going through on Adobe web site. The displays are even different.

Each time I reboot, I get an error X RUNDLL; error loading C:\Program file\NOS\bin\getPlus_Helper.dll.

Not sure if it is related to problem...not sure what it pertains too, but everything does seem to be working; except Flash on IE of course.

Going to take a break...have spent nearly 80 hours on this one problem...and don't see light from tunnel of frustration.

Thanks for assistance and will try and figure out solution this weekend; after a graduation I am going to tomorrow.

Hi, glad you caught up, usually the posters do that to me:-) I appreciate your cooperation. Please don't do anything more until you check with me. If Flash Player is working in FF, then just use that, until we get it Installed correctly for IE. When you ran the Uninstaller it Removed the Flash files from the Flash folder for IE as well as FF. So don't try  Installing again yet in IE.

I see what your problem is now that you have mentioned the C:\Program file\NOS\bin\getPlus_Helper.dll. It is the problem and is not a helper at all. If you go to Programs and Features via Control Panel, most likely you will find a DLM listing and or a getPlus listing. Remove either or both from there. Then Reboot your computer.

Also in your add ons for IE, if you have a get_atlcom Class, Remove it or Delete it, if you can. If not, Disable it. It is part of the DLM, but even if it was there, most likely it will be removed when you Remove the DLM/getPlus from Programs & Features.

DLM/getPlus/NOS has a history and it is not good and conflicts and causes problems most of the time.

Take a break, post whenever you want. Enjoy the Graduation, hope the weather is nice. We are having rain again in my area(Midwest) again.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Ok...using FF...I must have old version...but don't have Programs and

Features in Control Panel...not sure why Adobe would provide DLM (Download

Manager) if it is a problem. I could not find DLM in any folder during

searching. Could not find get_atlcom Class...so sort of confused on what

Adobe would have put on computer that is not a helper as they call it. When

I initially downloaded from the link Golf Channel sent me to for upgrade,

the Adobe site used the DLM to go through the steps of upgrade...but things

have not worked since.

Pertaining too...C:\Program file\NOS\bin\getPlus_Helper.dll; have not had an

error of any type since the last unintall/install procedure as you

suggested.

I'll be checking back on and off during the day...in meantime...Guess I'll

just keep searching and brain storming...appreciate your help.

Hi AdobeChaser, I'm sorry about the Programs & Features. You would find that DLM/getplus in Add/Remove, via Control Panel if it is there. The DLM is used to Download Flash Player from the site that you first used. It is supposed to disconnect after that. But so many times, it doesn't and causes a conflict. The get_atlcom Class is Installed as a browser add on and that is where it would be. Sometimes it is Installed and sometimes it is not. I just wanted you to check to see if it was and remove it or delete it if you could and if not, Disable it.(if it's there)

The fact that you cannot get the Shockwave Flash Object Installed, which is the ActiveX Control that works with your Flash files is the problem. You must have that Installed into your IE browser in order for Flash Player to work in IE.

I understand you may not have received any error from the link you cited, but even after the off line Uninstall and Install, the Shockwave Flash Object is not Installed. Something is blocking it. That the DLM/getplus is the problem is my opinion.

If you don't think it is, that is ok too:-) Let me know if the DLM/getplus is in Add/Remove. If it disconnected as it is supposed to do, it shouldn't be there.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi eidnonlb,

Before I forget, when I booted up there was an error, saying that

"C:\Program file\NOS\bin\getPlus_Helper.dll, could not be found"...something

seems to be looking for it.

I could not find anything in Add/Remove that pertained to DLM/getPlus...I

found these items that refer to Adobe...Acrobat.com, Adobe AIR, Adobe Flash

Player 10 Active X, Adobe Flash Player 10 plug in, Adobe Reader 9,3,2 -

CPSID_53951...

Should I remove the 10 plug in?

In IE browser, I found these in the manage add on section:

Name Shockwave Flash Object

Publisher Adobe Systems Incorporated

Status Disabled

File date Friday, June 11, 2010, 6:45 PM

Version 10.1.53.64

and:

Name Adobe PDF Link Helper

Publisher Adobe Systems, Incorporated

Status Disabled

File date Saturday, April 03, 2010, 7:36 PM

Version 9.3.2.163

I disabled both...!

Appreciate your help...I am at your beck and call, whenever you get some

time...

Hi AC, We'll see about that DLM in a minute, but yes I think I know what is looking for it. There are a couple of files that are also installed with this that we haven't discussed. But first, I don't understand why Flash Player 10 ActiveX and Flash Player 10 plug-in is listed in Add/Remove. Your Flash files showed the 10.1 version and that should be listed there, not the vs 10. So that is strange.

Also where did you find the Shockwave Flash Object? In Post #9 and Post #11 is was not to be found! So you have found it now, ok, go back and ENABLE IT!!! LOL You can also Enable the PDF helper, it doesn't conflict.

The Plot thickens:-)

After you Enable the Shockwave Flash Object, check your websites and if they are not working yet, then go back to your Flash files and post those files now. Don't forget to right click on the NPSWF ones and get the version numbers.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi Eidnolb,

I did call Golf Channel support and the person was not able to assist, but

said that I should have Player 9...he confused me...so dropped that

approach. Now, I found the Shockwave Flash Object and PDF helper by opening

the IE browser and then tools, manage add-ons.

Before I Enabled both of those above, I opened to Golf Channel web site with

IE and found on their main page, where their main Flash display is, the

sentence with "you have to upgrade" and link to Adobe. At that time, the

above items were disabled...after I placed them both at Enabled...that Golf

Channel main page, now shows no description as I mentioned before. Just sort

of blank. So that does effect their flash display to some extent. Just info.

When I go into the FF add-ons, it shows the version 10,1, 53, 64...not sure

what you mean about 10.1 and not the vs 10.

Ok, here is where the inexperience comes in...you asked to list Flash files.

Since not sure where to do that...did a search for Flash in C:drive and

obviously found 100's...but did notice Flash 8 folders...shouldn't other

Flash other than 10 been removed during the uninstall?

Will wait for you to compile my confusion and if need be, I'll start all

over if you need that.

TTYL...
