New Here ,
Aug 27, 2009 Aug 27, 2009

Hi.  I've tried to unistall flash 9 to upgrade to flash 10, because secunia are listing 9 as insecure, but everytime I reboot windows reinstalls flash9f.ocx with a message which says Flash9f.ocx failed to register. HRESULT-2147220473. Contact you support person. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP2.  I've tried the following:

I've uninstalled using the utility from adobe.

I've run CCleaner and cleared out the registry of all references to Flash 9f.ocx.

I'm now at a loss as to what to do.  Appreciate any help anyone can give.  Is there anyway of getting this thing off my computer?

Where is that OCX located?  (Secunia should tell you where.)

Hi, sorry to be so late in reply.  It's located at

C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9f.ocx

Thanks.

Ok, this is the standard Flash Player install directory.  (I've asked because some other Adobe products also install Flash Player in their own directories.)

Open a command prompt and type (or paste)

regsvr32 /u C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9f.ocx

After that you can just delete it.

Re-reading your original message

That is strange - Windows is definitely not doing that.  It must be something in your startup list - can you check what you have in your startup list?  (Startup Inspector is an easy way to manage your startup items.)

It is reporting "C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\SetPoint.exe" as something to do with the RBOT-BWI WORM! but I think that's a false positive looking at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/SetPoint.EXE-17540.html

Nothing there screams Flash to me, but I'm no expert.  Appreciate your help.  I'm now going to try your solution mentioned in the post above the one this post replies to.

It's something to do with hpqste08.exe.  I've tried your solution, which allows me to delete Flash9f.ocx, but I can't delete Flashutil9d.exe.  The adobe uninstaller says it will uninstall that on reboot, but when I reboot I get a windows installer window pop up, that requires a solutioncentre program to run from the installer disc for my hp printer, and that is what is reinstalling the flash stuff.  I'm going to try and disable all the hp stuff using Startup Inspector, and see if that allows me to uninstall Flash 9, at which point I'll install Flash 10 and re-enable the hp stuff.

It's definitely one of the hp things.  I uninstalled most of Flash, but was unable to get rid of Flashutil9d.exe and as sson as I re-enabled the hp startup programs the rest of flash9 was popped back ontpo the system.  How can I delete Flashutil9d.exe from my system.  I've run the adobe uninstaller provided, but it doesn't clear flahutil9d.exe on reboot, it leaves it there. I'm assuming once I get that off, hp won't cause a conflict and re-install it.

Try booting into Safe Mode to delete Flashutil9d.exe; if that doesn't work either, what error do you get when trying to delete?

Regarding the File not found messages from Startup Instpector, you can delete those two entries - will make Windows startup a bit quicker.

Hi, sorry I've been busy the last couple of days. Even in safe mode I get the message "You need permission to perform this action" with  try again or cancel buttons.  Try again just brings the message back up, and cancel just cancels.  Not sure how to attack this Flashutil9d.exe. I'm set up as the administrator account, but I can't seem to find a "delete as administrator" option.

I've had a quick googel and hit upon this page: http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-vista-windows-7-support/168861-you-need-pe... which suggests when you hit that message to do the following:

1. Click start windows button
2.click programs
3. click accessories
4. Right Click command prompt and slect run as Adminstrator
5. click continue
6. type in witth out quotes "net user administrator /antive:yes
7. enter
8. restart computer

Would this be applicable in this instance or is this something risky?
