For those of you, who work with aerospace, aviation and defence, I have just finished designing an unstructured Adobe FrameMaker 2022 template, which may be found here. It is backward compatible as it comes with a MIF version as well:

Who might be the customer for this template?
Being Unstruc FM, and thus having no DTD or XML, it presumably can't be used for documents that require S1000D.

I've been fortunate enough to never have worked under S1000D, so if there's an obvious answer to my question above, I wouldn't know it.

I have worked with quite a few customers who use FrameMaker for documentation purposes within defence and aviation, but who do not use structured publishing. They still need to maintain this level granularity. which can not be met with the other templates I design.

But I don't know... - I hope somebody will give it a shot 🙂

I have been fortunate enough to work under S1000D for quite a few years now. 🙂

It's not for the faint-of-heart but with the right tools it excels at creating and maintaining technical information for complex systems with a long lifecycle and a regular need for preventive and corrective actions. These publications typically run thousands or tens of thousands of pages.

While I appreciate the work Bjørn does when it comes to free or inexpensive templates, the situation in A&D, across Europe at least, is typically that S1000D 2.3 or 4.1 is required in procurement processes (5.x starting to show up more and more). In that case, we're either talking about Mekon's Eclipse suite of plugins to supercharge the S1000D support in FrameMaker (plugins that Adobe recommends themselves on the Help menu...) or larger systems like Flatirons Corena, Pennant R4i, Raytheon Eagle, Hi-Co and others, which all come with a (very) hefty pricetag. So it's seldom up to the pubs producer to decide on a format, but subject to the ILS specification from the mil procurement agency. Assuming the manufacturer wants to sell their equipment to a country's armed forces, ofcourse.

That being said, as long as a user of such a template understands that there is a very large risk they need to recreate the pub from the grounds up if they win a procurement, it may still be useful.
