Appendix numbering incorrectly

Guest

I have my appendices in two different files in Frame. One is for portrait files, and then the last one is for landscape files. It was the easiest way I could get them to work. Anyhow, now I want to autonumber the appendices, so I created two paragraph tags: AppendixFirst and AppendixNext. Everything is working fine, except the first appendix in the landscape file. The other three in that file are working fine. So, I read many blogs on this forum about numbering issues and decided the best fix for this is to click Continue Numbering from Previous Paragraph in my book file. Unfortunately, when I right-click my book file or go to Format, the Numbering menu is greyed out. I changed the numbering in my appendix landscape file, but when I update my book, it tells me the book format is overwriting the landscape file. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am not sure what you are doing exactly, but I think you are using appendix numbering in two different ways. When you have several appendixes in ONE file, the numbering from one to the next is paragraph numbering, NOT chapter numbering. The numbering from your portrait file to the landscape file is chapter numbering. Each numbering set increments independently of the other. So, I think you are using a poor approach to arranging your appendixes.

This is what I would do....

I would not put several appendixes in one file. Put each appendix in its own file, whether portrait or landscape. And in each file, use the variable <$chapnum> wherever you need to display the chapter number, which is the same as the appendix number.

Arrange the files in the book in the order you want. In the book file, right-click the NAME of the file you want to be the first appendix and select Numbering. In the Chapter tab, set the chapter number to be 1 and the format to beALPHABETIC. Then select all the OTHER appendixes in the book file, right-click the selection, and select Numbering. In the Chapter tab, select Continue from previous. Then update the book.

but when I update my book, it tells me the book format is overwriting the landscape file.

When you open a file and set the numbering and then update the book, the message is telling you that the setting in the book file is different from the setting in the file itself; FrameMaker always uses the setting in the book file. For this reason, one sets the numbering by right-clicking file names in the BOOK file, as described above, because it is that setting that counts when one updates the book.

Well, this almost worked. It came up with numbers though, instead of letters. I've tried changing the format using <A

+>, but I can't get it to work.

Where are you using <A+> exactly? Are you still trying to put several appendixes in ONE file? If so, please explain where you are setting the numbering and how?

Thanks,

Van
