We have files made with FM11. We started to use FM2020 and some files give message "At least one original filter used for graphics imported by reference is not available, or the imported file's format has changed. An alternative filter may be used if the file is recognized as a graphic FrameMaker can import." when opening. When you scroll the file at some point FM2020 crashes. Any ideas what to do with those files?

With the migration of FrameMaker to 64 bit in FrameMaker 2019, all graphic filters were updated or replaced with completely new ones. This is the reason why this message comes. Usually, that's a one-time message when opening a legacy document (pre-2019) in FrameMaker 2019/2020.

Can you try to save the file in FM 11 as MIF and then open the MIF in FM 2020?

Also, can you figure out at which page the error comes and which graphics are on this page? Any special graphic/image format?

Also, as a crash should not come, can you send the files to me so that we can investigate it and fix the bug?

I will share my email with you in a private message.

Hey ,

There are a lot of upgrades from FM11 to FrameMaker 2020 with many new libraries, Could you kindly tell me what is your image type ? or would you mind sending me the file on (email removed by admin) I will get it checked.

Thanks

It seems that the bmp images were the problem, files work fine after replacing those with jpg images.

Thank you for your help!

Make sure you check the quality of the output, esp. text and flat color areas, after replacing with JPG, which is a lossy format.

You may find that saving your BMP images as PNG provides better quality, and (depending on the number of colors used) might even be smaller files than the JPG.
