Hello Guys,

Can FM Backup Files be automatically saved in a specific location rather than where the main file is?

Thanks

Daniela

Not to my knowledge.

There would be the further question of whether you need custom destinations per document.

On document release, cleaning out .backup, .auto & crash files has always been part of my drill.

If you are using a journaling filesystem, or a content management system, perhaps just turning off Automatic Backup on Save (Edit » Preferences » General) would simplify life.

FM's auto-save is a pretty limited feature. All too often, you only discover that you need the .backup file when there's some problem opening the .fm or .book file, at which point the previous .backup is now over-written & lost.

Hi @Daniela Barros:

I agree with @Bob_Niland. You can turn the feature off and on via Preferences, but you cannot change the path.

No--which is not very useful at all.

Adobe needs to either allow location changes (in case of hard drive failure) and/or allow multiple backup versions to be saved (in case of document corruption).

I usually just turn the backup off and manually back up my entire project folder.

I came across this script to move backup files to another location. (I have not tried it.)

Hi Daniela,

For me the automatic backups are very important! Yes. I know that the backup is just the last version. But now and then I have to discard the current version and go back to this backup. Very useful!

When you need to save your backup files in another folder you can probably do this with a script. You have to decide first, if the script should just move the backup file to another folder. Or whether FrameMaker should save the backup file in another folder (so that the paths to graphics files and insets are kept).

Best regards

Rick Quatro also has a sort of proto script for saving backups where you want them that he shared on his blog. Caveats are that you have to hardcode the backup location in the script, but it is triggered each time you save.
