I am having trouble converting my document into a PDF. I have run into this issue in the past, but was able to resolve it by moving my files to my desktop and converting them there. An error message pops up saying, "There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found." after Adobe Distiller runs for awhile. I am not sure how to fix this issue. Can anyone help me with this?Capture.JPG

Are you printing to PDF or trying to Save As PDF? What version of FM? Standalone or part of TCS? What version of Acrobat?

Everything Jeff asked, plus: if you don't move your files to your desktop,

can you open all files in your book before attempting to print to the Adobe

logical printer?

And, do other files, like from Word, print OK?

Hello Jeff:

I tried saving as a PDF, printing as a PDF, and converting each portion of my book as a single PDF so I could combining the files later. I have FrameMaker 11 and Adobe Pro 10.

I think the TOC is the problem. I PDFed each file individually just fine but the error message appears when I tried to PDF the TOC. I thought maybe the TOC file had been corrupted so I deleted the TOC then created another one, but the same error message appears when I attempted to PDF the new TOC. I am not sure why Adobe thinks the file doesn't exist.

Hi Jeff,

It doesnt matter whether it is the TOC. I tried to PDF another document today and this time it was the third document in the book that was not allowing the PDF to be created. Whenever I try to "Print as a PDF", Framemaker crashes.

If I save as a PDF usually it works. It goes through distiller every time but for some reason it doesnt "find" files to create PDFs with them.

I dont think I can share my book since I am creating it for my company and it has not been released yet.

Not being able to PDF certain files is happening almost every week, which is very frustrating.

Hi EMT,

I had similar issues, but my discussion is buried several levels deep now so I'll recap: Jeff and Arnis reminded me to update to the latest patch and it seemed to fix the problem. I'll withhold final "fixed" status until I have time to play around with it some more, but I was able to generate a PDF.

One symptom I had that I don't see in your description: I could pick one file in the book and print it as a PDF. But if I tried to print the book - even if I stripped out all but the one chapter - it would crash Frame.

The latest patch fixed some book file issues, so I'm hoping the problem doesn't return to haunt me.

Good luck.

Hello Debra,

Where can I find the patch? I have never been able to "print" as a PDF because Framemaker has always crashed when I tried.

If I download the patch, I am sure some of the issues I have been having may get resolved.  Is there a special link I should follow or can I search for a patch on the Adobe website?

I went to the Adobe website and just drilled down until I found it. There are two patches. I just installed the second patch, assuming it included all the fixes in the first, but now I wish I wouldn't have made that assumption. I'd advise installing both to be safe.

In FM, if you click on the Help menu, there is an Updates... option.

Alternatively, the Forum overview page ( http://forums.adobe.com/community/framemaker ) has a link to the patches & updates in the FrameMaker Resources panel along the right side.

Verify that output for the TOC is actually being created by using the File > Print  with the Print to File option enabled. This will create a postscript file at the same location as the TOC file resides. If this has any size, run it through Distiller to see if there are any errors generating the PDF.
