Time to start entering these. If you are unsure about whether FM has the feature yet, please do some research and figure it out before posting.

Please don't post requests for assistance in here, either.

Cheers,

Sean

Yes, maybe my situation (see Importing PDF or HTML into Framemaker) is unusual, but then again whenever I think that, I find others in need of a similar solution. Granted, the authors didnt use Acrobat correctly, which has stimulated me to request PDF and HTML import filters, but there must be others who would find a need in having import filters that could convert PDF or HTML to Framemaker and retain the links even if it didnt (or couldnt) carryover the paragraph formats, and the converted document looked like courier font on an old CRT.

I would imagine if the filter was only required to convert text and links then the PDF file size wouldnt be any larger than it is today so that would eliminate that issue..right?

So please tell me.. does anyone else need to import PDF or HTML files into Framemaker?

Thanks,
Chris Mack

PDF only as a graphic, once in a blue moon. I prefer EPS.

HTML, never. But, it might be nice to be able to map HTML tags to FrameMaker tags.

Sean

How about letting whatever I enter in the spell-check correction box go through if I click on "Allow in Document." Or enabling a don't check spelling field like Word has.

In the Hypertext dialog box, it is possible for a user to inadvertently click on the Make View Only rather than the New Hypertext Marker button. If the user isnt aware the button changes to Make Editable then the only way to unlock the file is to press a keyboard sequence, which is Esc Shift+f l (lowercase L) k. Both buttons are so close to each other, and from a vertical plane perspective, the buttons overlap. That in itself might be a good reason for Adobe to move the buttons. If it were my decision, Id reduce the width of the Make View Only button, shift it to the far right, and make it parallel to the Validate Command upon Insertion checkbox. This would reduce the chance of accidental clicks. I hope this helps.

I would like an enhancement that would allow users to specify NOT TO CHECK SPELLING of text that is tagged with certain paragraph tags.
Examples are CODE or COMMANDLINE text that is tagged appropriately.

Daniela - unless I've misunderstood the question, you can already do this. Open the paragraph designer, go to the Default Font tab and select None from the Language options. You can do the same thing for character styles, too.

I'd like to request that transparent-image (.gif) importing keeps the transparent properties intact. This would enable us to import company logos on to any colored background that we choose.

Right now, the conversion process does not keep this image characteristic.

Another request I would like is to have the ability to rotate text in the Framemaker Graphics tool.

Thanks for considering these requests.

In both 6 and 7, not checking the extra spaces box in the spell checker doesn't work. I hit this when described file-name extensions, such as .wmf.

The book and screen index needs work. Please do something to the Index Headings -- bigger font, bold, something. They are hard to see.

Also, please include a cross-reference to something that changed from a previous release -- for example, from 6 to 7, Document Information on the PDF Setup Screen became File Info under the File menu. And, again, thanks to Sean and Arnis for pointing that one out to me.

I just spent about $900 for Framemaker 7 for Windows XP. I wanted to write a book using a more sophisticated product that Microsoft Word XP. First, the spell-checker in Framemaker is unbelievably bad and the Thesaurus is vintage 1990--is there an add-in or something that will actually work? I was expecting something much more sophisticated than Microsoft.
Thanks.

There is nothing.

The spell checker in FrameMaker is actually fairly flexible, but you have to dig. It doesn't do the on-the-fly thing, but neither is FrameMaker burdened by a bunch of programming overhead. Besides, spell-chucking on-the-fly fails in Word after about 300 pages and gives a message that the document is too complex for on-the-fly spell checking.

To add, I think MS Word is more sophisticated than unstructured FrameMaker. However, FrameMaker is more productive, robust, reliable, and you can count on FrameMaker more.

Cheers,

Sean

Exactly. I'll admit that Adobe's product are quite expensive, especially compared those from MS, but believe me, once you get the hang of Frame, you'll see why you spent the money you did. The book feature alone blows Word away.

I mentioned this in the 7.x wish list. It would be nice to have an image previewer. When importing an image file, I would like to be able to select the image and have it preview in a panel within the Import dialog box. Word has this it makes finding images much easier then having to remember file names or import the image just to see what it is.

Add the Import menu (and all of its submenus) that appears under File to the right-click menu. I would like to be able to right-click inside an anchored frame and select File>Import>File to insert an image directly into the anchored frame.

You can do this now by modifying the menus.cfg file. It's explained in

On a desktop publishing item from about.com, I'm reading about Open Type fonts, and a quick check of the Adobe site says they are the cat's meow. If they are that great, when will we see them in FM?

Horace,
Open Type fonts will work in FrameMaker, but you will not necessarily have
access to all of the font in FrameMaker, since the OT fonts that are unicode
based will have more characters than standard postscript fonts.

Sean,

That's what I meant, will they work in FM? Apparently so, but I don't have any to try.
